The Shriram Institute Technology Business Incubator, known as SRI-TBI, is a technology business incubator in Delhi, housed in the premises of the Shriram Institute for Industrial Research. It was set up under the sponsorship of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) and takes founders with product and process ventures in plastics, rubbers, specialty chemicals and waste management.

How programmes work

SRI-TBI runs one standing incubation programme. Entrepreneurs at the pre-incubation stage get help with feasibility studies and business plans. Incubation is offered as furnished office space, and the TBI says it can last one to three years, depending on the scope and dimensions of the business and the interest of the incubatee. The TBI describes the cost of entry as very nominal and gives no figure. Its pages do not say whether it takes equity.

The centre describes itself as providing multi-dimensional services under one roof, and its services are built around translating innovative ideas into technologies and turning them into business ventures.

Who can apply

The TBI's pages welcome individuals, scientists, researchers and engineers with product-based innovations, start-ups and early-stage companies, students with business ideas, professionals with start-up ideas, and national and multinational companies and NRIs with visionary ideas.

Admission follows an evaluation by an expert review committee. A start-up should preferably be a registered firm or company before it is admitted.

The TBI's thrust areas are plastics and rubbers, specialty chemicals and waste management. Its home page and FAQ also list "Others" among the thrust areas.

Facilities

Incubatees get a fully furnished office with dedicated internet facilities, and access to pilot-scale machinery and equipment. The TBI describes entry as giving entrants high quality physical facilities and infrastructure.

The host institute holds NABL accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for testing and calibration. That accreditation covers the parent laboratory, not the incubator itself.

Who runs it

SRI-TBI is part of the Shriram Institute for Industrial Research, an industrial research institute in Delhi. Its operations are overseen by an advisory board, drawn from the host institute, DST, industry and financial institutions, which meets half-yearly to review progress.

The TBI's home page says the parent has given mandated support to Indian industry since 1950. The parent's about page gives 1947 as its founding year and 1950 as the year it launched operations.

The parent's about page describes its incubation centres as working in biotech, clean tech, nanotech and pharmaceuticals. The TBI's own pages name only plastics, rubbers, specialty chemicals and waste management.

The TBI's pages do not publish a count of incubatees or outcomes.

Networks and recognition

SRI-TBI is a member of the Asia Pacific Incubation Network and of the Indian STEPs and Business Incubators Association, a registered professional body that promotes business incubation through the exchange of information, sharing of experience and networking among Indian business incubators, science and technology entrepreneurs parks and related organisations.

A government technology incubator listing gives 2008 as the year the TBI was established. The TBI's own pages do not give a founding year.
