Choosing the right programme

Start from what you are trying to build. If you need to get a physical prototype made, NIDHI-PRAYAS is the route - it is a DST scheme hosted here, it runs twelve months in milestone tranches, and SJCE-STEP states it takes no equity and no royalty and leaves the IP with you. If you have a concept and a team but nothing built, the Flagship Incubation Program is the twelve-month early-stage track. If you already have a product and customers and you want investor routes, Growth Acceleration is the six-month one. If you only want advice, the Expert Mentorship Clinic runs at any stage without a residency, and lab and compute access can be requested on its own through the facilities page.

How applications work

One online form covers the cohort. Write it around the three things the centre says it screens on: a technology or scientific innovation at the core, at least two co-founders committed full time, and a problem statement you have already tested with real users. The site expects a pitch deck alongside the form.

After the form comes a panel presentation, live or online, to the centre's directors, mentors and domain specialists. The site allows one to two weeks for it. Selected teams are told what their milestones are at that point, so go in able to describe what you would build in the first six months and how you would know it worked.

Check the dates before you apply

The home page advertises a cohort with an application deadline that has already passed while still saying applications are open, and the site's programme pages and its sitemap do not agree with each other. DST's own PRAYAS centre directory shows this centre's call for applications as closed, though it shows that for every centre on the list. None of that means the centre is not taking applications - it means the site is not a reliable guide to the current intake. What to ask before you commit

Only the PRAYAS page states a fee and equity position. For the incubation, acceleration and mentorship tracks the site says neither, so ask directly whether there is a fee, whether the centre takes a stake, and what the desk or lab access costs. Also ask whether NIDHI-PRAYAS is running here under the current round of the scheme, since DST publishes no current centre list.

What reviewers look for

The centre's framing is technical throughout - design for manufacturing, testing and validation, material selection, prototype feasibility. A pitch built on a real engineering problem and a plan to validate it fits this panel better than a pitch built on market size alone. Two committed co-founders is stated as a criterion, not a preference, so a solo founder should expect to be asked about it.

SJCE-STEP is a Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park on the JSS Science and Technology University campus in Mysuru, Karnataka. A STEP is an on-campus technology business incubator set up under the Department of Science and Technology's entrepreneurship programme, and this one sits inside the university formerly known as Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, which is where the SJCE in its name comes from. It runs incubation, acceleration and mentorship programmes for technology founders, and hosts the DST NIDHI-PRAYAS prototyping grant.

Two national registers confirm what the centre is. The Department of Science and Technology's published list of technology business incubators records SJCE-STEP as a TBI in Mysuru, with the host institute named as Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering - Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park and the registered incubator as SJCE-STEP on the JSS Technical Institutions campus. The same entry gives its thrust areas as electronics and IoT, IT and ITES, manufacturing, health and agriculture. DST's own directory of NIDHI-PRAYAS centres also lists SJCE-STEP, Mysore, as a PRAYAS centre. Neither register publishes an approval date or a funding period, so how current either listing is cannot be told from them.

How programmes work

SJCE-STEP describes five routes. NIDHI-PRAYAS is a twelve-month prototyping grant from the Department of Science and Technology, released in milestone tranches, for innovators building a physical prototype; the centre states that it takes no equity and no royalty and that the innovator keeps full ownership of the intellectual property. The Flagship Incubation Program is a twelve-month early-stage track with a dedicated desk on campus, weekly one-to-one strategy and milestone checkpoints, and legal, compliance and IP filing support. Growth Acceleration is a six-month track for later-stage startups, built around investor and angel network access, a demo day and go-to-market pilots. The Expert Mentorship Clinic runs three to six months of bi-weekly advisory sessions, compliance and tax reviews and founder peer circles, and is open to any stage. R and D Labs and Technical Support is not a cohort but an ongoing offer of lab, compute and prototyping access.

The intake route is the same for all of them. You submit an online application describing the product, the market and the team, then present to a panel of the centre's directors, mentors and domain specialists, which the site says takes one to two weeks. Selected teams then spend six to twelve months building towards a working product, and after that move into an open-ended scale phase built around demo day and investor introductions.

Only the PRAYAS page states a fee and equity position. The other programmes do not say whether they charge, or whether the centre takes a stake, so ask before you commit.

Who can apply

The centre publishes three admissions criteria for its cohort: a technology or scientific innovation at the core of the idea, at least two co-founders working on it full time, and a problem statement you have already validated. Nothing on the site restricts applications to JSS students or staff, and nothing requires an incorporated company, though the site does not state a position on incorporation either way. NIDHI-PRAYAS is described as being for innovators, grassroots creators and early-stage technology founders, and the centre's FAQ raises the question of whether individuals and students can apply without a registered company - but that answer only loads with JavaScript and could not be read, so check it directly.

Facilities

The centre's makerspace is presented as a PRAYAS Shala, stated at over 5,000 square feet with more than 108 tools and round-the-clock access. Named equipment includes 3D printers, laser cutters, wire EDM, measuring and quality-control instruments, and the programmes page adds CNC, PCB fabrication and IoT test apparatus. Separately the site describes 10,000 square feet of incubation space with 24/7 access, meeting and conference rooms, AI and ML server nodes with cloud compute and software credits, and hardware prototyping, testing and validation labs. Founders are also offered access to JSS STU's departmental laboratories in electronics and communication, mechanical, computer science and biotechnology. Scale

Be careful with the numbers here. The site's own pages give the size of the portfolio as 100+ in one place and 150+ in another, and the four headline counters on the home page never finish loading, so they display as zero. Mentor numbers are given as 50+ and 200+ on the same page. The about page's timeline dates the centre's founding to 1988, with support from the Department of Science and Technology and IDBI, while the heading above that timeline says 1985. Figures for jobs created, survival rate and capital raised are self-reported, undated and not corroborated anywhere we could check, and the partner counts name no partner. We have not published any of them.

Who runs it

The centre does not name its team on its site - the leadership and advisory board blocks on the about page load nothing. Government listings name Anoop N as the contact for the PRAYAS centre and Shivashankar B as the principal investigator on DST's NIDHI Accelerator list.

Locations and contact

SJCE-STEP works from the JSS Science and Technology University campus in Mysuru, 570006. It has no other locations. Its site gives two different addresses for general email, and the one that matches both the DST PRAYAS directory and the Ministry of MSME's register is info@sjcestep.in. Its careers page lists roles at incubated startups rather than jobs at the centre itself, and its events page currently shows nothing.
