Best for: Technology founders, researchers and MSMEs who want on-campus space, labs and mentoring in Kerala
- Idea – Early revenue
- 12 to 24 months
- In person
- No equity
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
The incubator's main programme. Applications are open all year through a form on its site, with no cohort dates. Incubation usually runs 12 to 24 months, depending on how far along the startup is.
What you get
- Office space with standard furniture in one of three buildings on campus, offered at a concessional rate
- A meeting and conference room with a projector, Wi-Fi, uninterrupted power, a printer with scanner and a photocopier; computers on monthly rent
- Access to the institute's laboratories, and a library of management books, journals, newspapers and research papers on IT, business, management and trade
- Mentoring from NIT Calicut faculty, industry experts and entrepreneurs, plus visiting IIM faculty on management questions
- Technology counselling on choosing technology, developing the product, improving the process and buying equipment
- Pre-feasibility studies, project appraisal, market research and techno-economic analysis
- Training in entrepreneurship, management and legal compliance
- Help with market access, regulatory compliance, intellectual property and business development
- Introductions into seed-funding schemes and investor networks
Who can apply
- Students, researchers, entrepreneurs, startups, MSMEs, innovators, technology-driven businesses and social enterprises
- You do not need a registered company; the incubator will guide you through registration if you are selected
- The applicant may be a society, a limited company, a partnership or a sole proprietorship
- The business must be technology-based and in an advanced technology area such as information technology, electronics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, agriculture or renewable energy
How selection works: applications are reviewed for how novel and technically workable the idea is, its market potential, the company's competitiveness and adaptability, its growth potential and financial sustainability, whether it can create jobs or revenue, the promoters' record with earlier ventures, whether the business plan is sound, and whether the company genuinely needs an incubator. Once a plan is accepted and the company inducted, an executive and steering committee reviews it periodically.
How to apply: fill the incubation application form on the incubator's site. It asks for the problem and your solution, what is new about it, the technology behind it, competing products and who buys, how far development has got and how long to a prototype or field test, and the funding you are looking for. Questions can go to tbi@nitc.ac.in.
Idea Corner
ProgrammeA route in for people with an idea but no company: a panel reviews it, and a shortlisted idea goes on to business-plan help and a pitch to the incubator's executive members.
Best for: People with a technology idea who do not yet have a company or a business plan
- Idea
- In person
- Free, no equity
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
Idea Corner is the incubator's front door for people who are not ready to apply for incubation. You send in your idea and a panel of technical and management experts looks at how novel it is and whether it can be commercialised and scaled.
What you get
- A review of your idea by a panel drawn from both technical and management backgrounds
- If shortlisted, help from the incubator's experts with the technicalities and procedures of preparing a business plan
- A chance to pitch that plan to TBI NITC's panel of executive members; if it is approved, you are inducted as an incubatee on the normal terms
Who can apply
- Anyone with a new and innovative idea; no company or business plan is needed
- Ideas in biotechnology, nanotechnology, renewable energy, agriculture, IT and ITeS, and electronics are given high priority
How selection works: the panel assesses how innovative the idea is and whether it can be marketed, commercialised and scaled. The incubator says it will come back to you only if the idea is shortlisted.
How to apply: use the Share Ideas form on the incubator's Idea Corner page, or write to tbi@nitc.ac.in.
Seed funding support for incubatees
Grant schemeFour seed-funding routes the incubator can put its own incubatees through; the page carries no dates, so check what is currently open.
Best for: Startups already incubated at TBI NIT Calicut
- Prototype – Early revenue
- In person
- Grant support for selected startups
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
This is not an open call. It describes the routes through which incubatees of TBI NITC can be put up for seed funding once they are inside the incubator.
What you get
- A scheme funded by the central electronics and IT ministry, which the incubator may operate as a soft loan or as a mix of loan and equity
- The incubator's own incubation fund, operated as a soft loan at a nominal rate of interest
- A Technology Development Board seed fund, with its own management committee for selecting and monitoring companies
- The Ministry of MSME's grant under its incubator scheme, for product-development proposals
Who can apply
- Companies already incubated at TBI NITC
How selection works: each route has its own committee. For the MSME route, product-development proposals are first selected by a managing committee made up of the incubator's executive committee members, the head of the state MSME Development Institute and an industry expert, then forwarded to the Development Commissioner (MSME), who runs a second round of selection.
How to apply: there is no separate form. Get into the incubation programme first, then raise funding with the incubator. Treat the published detail as background rather than a live offer: the page uses the electronics department's pre-2016 name and gives no sanction dates, so ask at tbi@nitc.ac.in what is currently available.

Official approvals this incubator holds.
Neither of these tells you whether the backing is current, because neither source publishes a period. The incubator makes no Atal, NIDHI, DPIIT or Startup India claim anywhere on its site.
Set up by the Department of Science and Technology with NIT Calicut· 2003
The incubator's own about page says it was "set up by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and National Institute of Technology, Calicut in 2003-2004". That is a first-party statement about how the centre was established, not that it currently holds a NIDHI-TBI sanction: the site nowhere describes a NIDHI recognition, and its NIDHI PRAYAS menu item leads to a page marked under construction. Whether DST support is current cannot be told from the site.
Host Institute, MSME Innovative Scheme (Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)
Listed at entry 541 of the Ministry's published List of Host Institutes for the incubation component of the MSME Innovative Scheme, as "NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CALICUT" (KOZHIKODE, KERALA), checked 24 September 2026. The listing names the host institute rather than the incubator. It is the status that lets an innovator name the institute as their Host Institute when applying on the ministry's own portal. The list gives no approval date, no period and no status column, so whether the recognition is current cannot be told from it; and being listed is a capacity registration, not evidence that the institute has ever hosted an approved idea. Separately, the incubator's own funding page describes the Ministry of MSME's grant under its incubator scheme and the committee that selects for it.
How to apply to Technology Business Incubator, NIT Calicut
Choose the right way in
- You have a company or a working prototype: apply through the incubation form. It is open all year and there is no cohort to wait for.
- You only have an idea: use Idea Corner instead. It is built for people without a business plan, and a shortlisted idea moves on to plan-building help and then a pitch to the executive members.
- You are not at NIT Calicut: apply anyway. The incubator states that students, researchers, entrepreneurs, startups, MSMEs, innovators and social enterprises can all apply, and that a registered company is not required.
How the application works
The incubation form is short but every question is substantive. Draft your answers before you open it. It asks for:
- the problem you are solving, your solution, and what is genuinely new about it compared with what already exists
- the technology or process behind it
- competing products, how yours differs, whether you sell to businesses or consumers, and who buys
- how far the product has got, and how many months you need to reach a prototype or a field test with a real user
- what kind of funding you want, how much, and by when
Answer the novelty question carefully. It is asked twice, in different words, and it is the first thing on the published acceptance criteria.
How selection works
Applications are assessed for innovation, feasibility and growth potential, then measured against a published list: market potential, competitiveness, adaptability, growth potential, financial sustainability, job or revenue potential, the promoters' track record with earlier ventures, and a sound business plan. Reviewers also want to see that you actually need what an incubator offers, so be specific about which facilities, labs or mentoring you would use.
There is one hard gate. The business has to sit in an advanced technology area, and the company has to read as technology-based: commercialising a science or technology innovation, staffed largely by engineers, scientists or technicians, or dependent on research and development. A services or trading business is unlikely to clear that bar.
After induction, the executive and steering committee reviews incubatees periodically and can ask for changes, so expect the relationship to be managed rather than hands-off.
On funding
Do not apply expecting money. The incubator says directly that direct funding is not guaranteed and that its role is to help startups reach grants, government schemes, investor networks and venture capital. It does describe seed-funding routes through the electronics and IT ministry, the Technology Development Board, the Ministry of MSME and its own incubation fund, but the page carries no dates and uses a departmental name that has since changed, so ask what is currently available rather than assuming.
Practical notes
- Applying is free. Space and computers are rented, so budget for occupancy.
- If you are selected without a registered company, TBI will guide you through registration.
- Incubation usually runs 12 to 24 months.
- Many pages linked from the menu are still under construction, so the office inbox and phone number on the contact page are the reliable way to ask about anything the site does not answer.
About Technology Business Incubator, NIT Calicut
The Technology Business Incubator at NIT Calicut, known on its own site as TBI NITC and operating under the name NIT Calicut Foundation for Technology Business Incubation, is a technology incubator on the institute's campus at Kattangal, Kozhikode. It was set up in 2003-2004 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, together with NIT Calicut, originally to support startups in IT and electronics. It now says it works with startups in software, rubber technology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, agriculture and renewable energy as well.
It is a working incubator rather than a campus innovation cell. It says it holds 15 to 17 companies at a time across about 7,000 square feet in three buildings, and it lists current incubatees including Better Shark, ISFRC Technologies, Infobreez Technologies, Nawe Robotics, MEDGYOR, Core Valley Herbal Technologies, Blackfly Technologies and Pelican Thermogenics. Its graduated list includes Nucore Software, Zesty Beanz Technologies, Wiinnova Software Labs, Ibis Medical Equipment & Systems, Infinite Open Source Solutions, Thapas Energy, Eden Technologies, Velozeta and Ceino Technologies.
How programmes work
There are two ways in. The main one is the incubation programme, which you apply to at any time using the form on the site. Incubation typically runs 12 to 24 months, depending on the stage of the startup. Selected companies get office space with furniture, a meeting room with a projector, Wi-Fi, uninterrupted power, a photocopier and a printer, computers on monthly rent, and access to the institute's laboratories and a library of management books, journals and research papers.
The second route is Idea Corner, for people who have an idea but no company and no business plan yet. You send the idea in, a panel of technical and management members looks at how novel it is and whether it can be sold and scaled, and if it is shortlisted TBI helps you build a business plan. That plan is then pitched to TBI's executive members, and if they approve it you are inducted as an incubatee on the usual terms.
Separately, the incubator describes four seed-funding routes it can put incubatees through: a scheme funded by the electronics and IT ministry, its own incubation fund operated as a soft loan at a nominal interest rate, a Technology Development Board seed fund, and the Ministry of MSME's grant under its incubator scheme, where proposals go first to a committee that includes the head of the state MSME Development Institute and then to the Development Commissioner. The site is clear that money is not guaranteed and that its usual job is to help startups reach grants, government schemes and investors. Read that section as a description of what has been sanctioned to the incubator rather than a live call, because the page still uses the electronics department's pre-2016 name and carries no dates.
Who can apply
You do not have to be at NIT Calicut. The incubation page answers the question of who may apply with a list covering students, researchers, entrepreneurs, startups, MSMEs, innovators, technology-driven businesses and social enterprises. It also says plainly that you do not need a registered company to apply, and that TBI will guide you through registration if you are selected. An applicant may be a society, a limited company, a partnership or a sole proprietorship.
What it does gate on is the nature of the business. The selection page says the proposed activity should be in an advanced technology area such as information technology, electronics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, agriculture or renewable energy, and that the company must fit the definition of a technology-based company: one commercialising science or technology innovations, employing a high share of technicians, engineers or scientists, or needing research and development to produce its products. Applying is free, though the incubator notes that particular programmes or services may carry a fee, and space and computers are rented.
How selection works
The published acceptance criteria are how novel and technically workable the product is, its market potential, how well the company can compete and adapt, its growth potential and financial sustainability, whether it can create jobs or revenue, whether the promoters have run ventures before, whether the business plan is sound, and whether the company genuinely needs incubator services. After a company is inducted, an executive and steering committee reviews it periodically and can propose changes.
Facilities
Beyond office space, TBI NITC runs a Fab Lab on campus. Its published equipment list includes a CNC router, a sand blasting machine, a jigsaw machine and three electronic work benches carrying multimeters, DC power supplies, function generators and a 50 MHz digital oscilloscope. The laser cutter is listed as under maintenance. Incubatees also get faculty technical support, visiting IIM faculty for management questions, and the institute's online portal for research papers.
Who runs it
Dr. Preethi Manniledam is the Chief Executive Officer and Vijith Kumar C V the Administrative Officer. Dr. A. P. Sudheer, Dean (Research & Consultancy) at NITC, chairs TBI NITC, and Dr. A. Sujith is its secretary. The board is chaired by the institute's director, Dr. Prasad Krishna, and the membership includes a chartered accountant, an advocate and the head of NITC's School of Management Studies. A long list of faculty and industry mentors is published on the about page.
What to know before you rely on the site
Several sections of the site are unfinished. The nav items for NIDHI PRAYAS, IEDC, workshops and trainings, other events, careers, internships, tenders, news, blog and gallery all lead to a page that says it is under construction, so there is no published detail behind any of them and no stated call. The three news cards on the home page are unedited sample text left in by the site builders. The home page and the incubation page also give different figures for how many startups have been incubated, so no count is published here. The incubator can be reached at its office inbox, and it is on the NIT Calicut campus at Kattangal.
