Best for: Idea-stage innovators with a physical product who need to build a prototype
- Idea – Prototype
- Prototype expected within 18 months
- In person
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science & Technology (DST), SINE, IIT Bombay
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
NIDHI PRAYAS is a Department of Science and Technology scheme for idea-stage entrepreneurs with a physical product who need help getting to a prototype. VITTBI is a PRAYAS Centre under the scheme, which is managed as a programme management unit by SINE at IIT Bombay. It runs in annual fund cycles and the call was closed when we last checked.
What you get
- Grant support to turn an idea into a prototype within eighteen months
- Access to infrastructure, a prototype development facility and strategic mentorship
- Shared common facilities and co-working space
- Selected applicants are also considered for pre-incubation or incubation at VITTBI
Who can apply
- An individual Indian innovator, at least eighteen years old on the date of application, with government-approved proof of nationality
- A team, provided it agrees on one lead applicant who applies and receives the support on the team's behalf
- An existing incubatee of VITTBI or another incubator under co-incubation, not more than seven years from incorporation, developing a prototype for a new product it has not had similar support for, and under the scheme's turnover cap
- Not eligible: software-development projects, pure academic research, doctoral research projects, and anyone converting an institute's own intellectual property into a prototype without the intellectual property moving to them
- If you study or work somewhere, you need a no-objection certificate from that institution; institute-owned intellectual property needs its own no-objection certificate
- You can take this support only once, and not if you have had similar support for the same idea from another government body
How selection works: Preference may go to innovators who have bootstrapped or hold a co-investment commitment, who have a clear roadmap to commercialisation or creating a startup, to women innovators and to young innovators. Grantees must register for VITTBI's pre-incubation or incubation programme for the whole duration and work on the prototype full time.
How to apply: Download the application from the PRAYAS Centre page and email the completed form to vittbi.grants@vit.ac.in.

- You must register for VITTBI's pre-incubation or incubation programme for the whole duration
- Not for people using it as a stop-gap between jobs or during studies, or for ideas with little technology innovation that are less than six months from commercialisation
How selection works: Preference goes to technology business ideas with larger technology uncertainty or long gestation periods, ideas that build on technology or intellectual property from publicly funded research or academic organisations, and ideas with considerable social impact. The programme's own stated aims are that at least thirty per cent of supported ideas become startup companies and at least ten per cent of recipients raise funding within eighteen months. How to apply to VIT TBI
Choosing the right programme
- You have an idea for a physical product and need a prototype. NIDHI PRAYAS is the route. Note that software-only projects and pure academic research are explicitly out of scope.
- You want to work on a technology business idea full time and have no other income. NIDHI EiR is the fellowship route. You cannot hold another fellowship or salary at the same time.
- You are building an ICT product using IoT, AI, blockchain or robotics. Look at the TIDE 2.0 centre. Its Entrepreneur-in-Residence track takes you from idea to proof of concept; its grants track takes a proven concept to a minimum viable product and to market.
- You are in life sciences or medical devices. The BioNEST bioincubation centre is where the lab equipment and the BIRAC Seed route sit.
- You are already a registered company in incubation and need seed support. NIDHI Seed is the one, but check the shareholding and residency conditions first.
- You have raised equity and are generating revenue. Ask about IND SpringBoard, the Indian Bank credit facility VITTBI incubatees can access.
How applications work
- General incubation applications go through the Apply Now form on the VITTBI site.
- Grant programme applications work differently: download the form from the programme page, fill it in and email it to vittbi.grants@vit.ac.in.
- Several calls run in annual fund cycles rather than continuously, so a page may say the call is closed. When we last checked, the NIDHI PRAYAS, NIDHI Seed and TIDE 2.0 calls were closed and the NIDHI EiR page said a call would open shortly. Write to the grants inbox to ask when the next cycle opens.
- General questions can go to vittbi@vit.ac.in or tbicoordinator@vit.ac.in.
What to put in the application
VITTBI says an incubation application should carry:
- Your name, address, telephone and email.
- The full educational background and experience of every promoter on the team.
- A short description of the technology and the business.
- The kind of research or development help you need.
- What start-up capital you already have.
- Which VITTBI services you expect to use.
- A declaration that nothing you have shared is a trade or commercial secret.
How selection works
A panel of technocrats reviews applications and interviews the promoters. It includes industry professionals, bankers, venture capitalists and academics. The panel weighs the business idea, whether a market exists, the potential value of the technology, growth prospects, how innovative the work is, and the team behind it.
What reviewers look for
- A clear route to market. NIDHI PRAYAS says preference may go to innovators with a clear roadmap to commercialisation or to creating a startup.
- Skin in the game. Bootstrapping or a co-investment commitment counts in your favour on PRAYAS. Women innovators and young innovators are also named as preferences.
- Full-time commitment. Both PRAYAS and NIDHI EiR say the support is not a stop-gap between jobs or while you study. Expect to be asked about this.
- Clean IP. If the idea builds on your institute's or employer's intellectual property, get a no-objection certificate for use or transfer before you apply. If you are studying or working somewhere, you need an NOC to apply at all.
- Real technology risk on the EiR route. NIDHI EiR says it prefers ideas with larger technology uncertainty or long gestation, ideas built on publicly funded research, and ideas with social impact — and discourages ideas that are months from commercialisation with little technology innovation.
- You have not taken the same support before. PRAYAS can be taken only once, and not if you have had similar support from another government body for the same idea.
About VIT TBI
VIT - Technology Business Incubator, usually written VITTBI, is the technology business incubator of Vellore Institute of Technology's Vellore campus in Tamil Nadu. It was incorporated in 2003 and is registered as a not-for-profit society. It began with support from the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, and now runs funding programmes backed by DST, BIRAC and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
How programmes work
Most of what VITTBI offers a founder is a grant programme tied to a national scheme, plus incubation at the centre alongside it. There are five funding routes on its own count: DST NIDHI PRAYAS, DST NIDHI EiR, DST NIDHI Seed, BIRAC Seed and the MeitY EiR, proof-of-concept and scale-up funds.
NIDHI PRAYAS is for idea-stage innovators with a physical product who need to build a prototype. VITTBI runs it as a PRAYAS Centre under the scheme, which is managed as a programme management unit by SINE at IIT Bombay. Grantees get prototyping support and mentorship, and are expected to have a prototype within eighteen months. Software-development projects and pure academic research are not eligible.
NIDHI EiR is a fellowship for first-generation entrepreneurs who want to work on a technology business idea full time. It runs under the Technology Translation and Innovation Division, formerly NSTEDB, and the scheme is managed by Venture Center, NCL, Pune. Recipients get co-working space, guidance from experienced entrepreneurs and network introductions.
NIDHI Seed is seed support for incubatee startups that are already companies and already resident at an incubator.
The TIDE 2.0 centre has been running since 2019 and supports ICT ventures working with emerging technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, blockchain and robotics. It has two tracks. The Entrepreneur-in-Residence track is for an individual, a student or a startup that needs to develop and validate an idea into a proof of concept. The grants track is for a startup that already has a proof of concept and wants to build a minimum viable product and get to market, with mentorship through the programme. Both run in annual fund cycles, and both calls were closed when we last checked.
The bioincubation centre runs under BIRAC's BioNEST scheme and supports startups and bio-entrepreneurs in life sciences and medical devices. The BIRAC Seed fund route is linked from its page.
Beyond the grants, VITTBI signed an agreement with Indian Bank in October 2021 for IND SpringBoard, a loan scheme for startups and MSMEs. Incubated startups that have raised equity and are generating revenue can use it.
Who can apply
The general incubation route is open to technology startups that apply through the form on the site. VITTBI's stated thrust areas are biotech, healthcare, industrial IoT, life sciences, medical devices and fintech. Each grant programme then adds its own conditions. NIDHI PRAYAS wants an Indian innovator at least eighteen years old, or a team with a named lead applicant, or an existing incubatee whose startup is under seven years old and under a turnover cap. NIDHI Seed wants a company registered in India, at least three months of residency at an incubator, Indian promoters holding at least fifty-one per cent, and rules out Indian subsidiaries of foreign companies. NIDHI EiR wants a first-generation entrepreneur with no other income or fellowship, working on the idea full time, with a business plan and an investment proposal ready.
Applications are read by a panel of technocrats drawn from industry, banking, venture capital and academia. The panel interviews the promoters and weighs the business idea, the market, the value of the technology, growth prospects, how innovative the work is, and the promoter team.
Facilities
VITTBI runs a Product Innovation Centre open to its incubatees, along with independent incubation offices, co-working space, a conference room and discussion rooms. Incubatees also get access to laboratories, machinery and other facilities on the VIT campus.
The BioNEST bioincubation facility carries a named list of analytical and life-science equipment, including ultra-performance and high-performance liquid chromatography, an atomic absorption spectrometer, a densitometer, a cooling centrifuge, pulse field gel electrophoresis, a cryo deep freezer, real-time PCR instruments, an ultra-pure water system, an imaging system, a microplate spectrophotometer and one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis. On the prototyping side there is an Ultimaker 3D printer, a PCB prototype and antenna design machine, a Microsoft HoloLens development edition, a thermal imaging camera and Zemax OpticStudio.
Services and support
VITTBI mentors incubatees one-on-one at regular intervals and draws on a mentor pool of senior VIT faculty, entrepreneurs, business consultants and industry experts. It tracks government scheme updates from DST, DSIR, DBT, MSME and TIFAC and points incubatees at the right ones, and it introduces startups to its investor pool. Incubatees can hire student interns from the VIT campus, helped by a flexible credit system that lets students plan classes around startup work. Incubatees also qualify for GST exemption for three years subject to a turnover cap. VITTBI offers soft-landing support to companies from outside India looking to start operations near Vellore; past cases are a German firm, Kramski, and a UAE firm, Smithline Reinforced Composites.
It is eligible to receive corporate CSR funding under Section 135, Schedule VII of the Companies Act 2013. DANA Care has funded VITTBI startups in 2022, 2023 and 2025, and LG Soft India ran a capacity-building programme called PACTS with it in 2021 and again in 2023. Older programmes were funded by infodev and UNIDO.
Scale
On its home page VITTBI reports more than 200 startups supported, more than 130 products launched, more than 2,000 jobs generated and more than 120 patents and design registrations. Those counters only display once the page's script runs; on a plain page load they read zero.
Events
VITTBI runs hands-on technical workshops, including sessions on next-generation sequencing data analysis, qPCR for gene expression analysis and smart electronics development, alongside an event called Dream2Reality. Its newsletter has been published since 2005.
