EPFO registration is mandatory within 30 days of reaching 20 employees. Both employer and employee contribute 12% of basic salary + dearness allowance. The employer's 12% is split: 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) and 3.67% to the EPF account.

Who Needs EPF / PF Registration?

Every factory or establishment with 20 or more employees. Certain notified industries (mines, plantations, etc.) have a lower threshold of 10 employees. Voluntary registration is possible for establishments with fewer employees.

What is a UAN?

A Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit unique number allotted to every EPF member. It remains constant throughout the employee's career, even if they change jobs.

Can a startup with fewer than 20 employees voluntarily register for EPF?

Yes. Any establishment can register voluntarily under Section 1(4) of the EPF Act. This is common among startups that want to offer PF as a benefit to attract talent.

What is the employee and employer contribution rate?
