The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying is one of the departments of the Government of India's Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, created by a Cabinet Secretariat notification of 17 June 2019. It traces back to 1 February 1991, when the animal husbandry and dairy development divisions of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation were separated into a department of their own; the fisheries division and part of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries were moved in during 1997. It is based at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi and works through divisions covering administration, trade, international cooperation, budget and finance, animal quarantine and certification services, and Kisan Credit Cards for livestock farmers. Its work spans livestock and dairy development schemes such as the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund and the National Livestock Mission, breed multiplication and breeder farm programmes for poultry, pigs, sheep and goats, the Bharat Pashudhan animal database, and the National Gopal Ratna Award.
