IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) is the nodal incubator of IIT Madras, based in the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai. It is a not-for-profit Section 8 company and describes itself as a deep-tech startup hub. It is recognised as a Technology Business Incubator by the Government of India.

Who can apply

Admission is open to IIT Madras faculty and staff, current and retired, to IIT Madras students and current project staff, and to alumni of any IIT. Outside founders can apply too, as external startups with a strong technology base or an affiliation to IIT Madras as R&D partners. Proposals with strong social and strategic impact are also considered.

How incubation works

Admission starts with an e-application. Proposals are screened with attention to financial and technical due diligence, then given final approval by an Incubation Committee. An agreement is signed to start formal incubation. Incubation support runs for 18 months.

What incubatees get

Incubatees can use IIT Madras laboratories, workshop facilities and equipment. Alumni mentors from the IIT Madras Entrepreneurship Forum hold monthly clinics. The cell makes introductions to angel investors, venture capital firms and financial institutions. In-house consultants help with accounting, tax, company secretary, legal and IP work. Startups get help toward Startup India recognition, and may ask to call themselves an IIT Madras Incubated Company. Seed support comes from the IIT Madras Startup Fund and government seed schemes, subject to availability. After incubation, some startups are offered shared office space, and mature startups can apply for space at the Research Park.

The cell's own website gives these figures, updated October 2026: 200+ startups supported, 70+ graduated, 75+ in the market, 100+ patents filed, 3000+ jobs created, 98 partners and 21 mentors. Press coverage has cited higher startup counts, so treat these as the cell's own figures.
