Track record
What SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre (SMVDU-TBIC) reports about its portfolio.
These figures are counted from the companies and innovators the centre names on its own pages. Its homepage counters claim more ideas received and more startups in incubation than those lists account for, so we have not published them.
Figures as marked — tbic.smvdu.ac.in, as of Jun 2026.
Programmes they run
Standing programmes at SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre (SMVDU-TBIC), separate from the funding calls above.
The centre runs a three-phase ladder — pre-incubation, incubation and an accelerator phase — plus two schemes funded by the Department of Science & Technology. Its policy sets no campus restriction on incubation, but the pre-incubation cohorts it advertised during 2026 were open only to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University students. Founders from outside the campus should approach the standing incubation route.
Incubation
IncubationThe centre's main phase, for startups with a working product and a tested business model, running up to fifteen months with workspace, mentoring and seed funding.
Best for: Technology startups with a working product and a tested business model, registered as a company or with MSME, DPIIT or JKTPO
- MVP – Early revenue
- Up to 15 months
- Hybrid
- Takes equity
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science & Technology (DST)
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
Incubation is the route for a startup that is past the idea stage. You need a working product and a business model you have tested, and you need to be a registered entity. The centre's policy allows direct entry with the right documents, so you do not have to come through pre-incubation.
What you get
- A mentor matched to your sector and business model, and workshops on pitching, marketing and intellectual property
- Office and co-working space, meeting and conference rooms, and access to campus labs and prototyping facilities
- Seed funding from the centre's own seed fund where you qualify, released in tranches against agreed milestones
- Introductions to angel investors, venture capital firms and corporate partners through pitching events and funding forums
- Help applying for government schemes and grants
- Support with filing patents, trademarks and copyrights, and introductions to intellectual property firms
Who can apply
- Technology startups with a working product and a validated business model
- Registered as a private or public limited company, or conditionally an LLP or joint proprietary firm, or registered with MSME, DPIIT or JKTPO
- Incorporated within the last two years, with at least 51 per cent of shareholding held by Indian promoters
- DPIIT recognition is expected within thirty days of the pre-incubation phase, with extensions available on request
- No campus, state or geography restriction is set. Founders from outside Jammu & Kashmir appear among the companies that have graduated.
- Employees promoting a company need a no-objection certificate from their employer
How selection works: You submit an executive summary and business plan. A three-person screening committee assesses innovation, market potential and how central the technology is. If you clear it you present to the committee, and startups seeking seed funding are then evaluated by the centre's managing committee before the chairperson approves, usually one to three weeks after the presentation. The published scorecard weights the need for the idea most heavily, then feasibility, impact and novelty equally, then the team, the plan for using funds and the presentation.
What it takes: Once incorporated you must offer the centre a minimum one per cent equity stake in return for mentorship and services, and it may take more depending on your stage. Mentors may separately ask for equity or a fee. The centre may charge for office space, utilities and specialised services, but publishes no schedule, so ask. Intellectual property you develop stays yours unless you sign it over.
How to apply: Submit the online application on the centre's website; email and physical applications are also accepted. Enquiries go to smvdu.tbic@smvdu.ac.in.
Pre-Incubation
IncubationA six-month proof-of-concept phase that takes an idea to a tested business model, open in policy to students, alumni, faculty and outside innovators.
Best for: Innovators with an early idea — in policy students, alumni, faculty and outside innovators; recent cohorts were open only to SMVDU students
- Idea – Prototype
- About 6 months
With Department of Science & Technology (DST)
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
Pre-incubation is where the centre starts with an idea rather than a company. It runs about six months, with periodic reviews, and is meant to get you to a feasible business model and a working prototype.
The centre delivers it both as a standing route and as dated cohorts. The two cohorts it advertised during 2026 were restricted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University students, and both have closed. The policy behind the phase is broader than the cohorts, so if you are not an SMVDU student it is worth asking the centre directly rather than waiting for a call.
What you get
- Mentoring on refining the idea and building a business model
- Shared office space, internet and tools
- Workshops on business, intellectual property and strategy
- Access to mentors, industry experts and investors
- A route through to the incubation phase
Who can apply
- Per the centre's policy, students, alumni, faculty and outside innovators
- You need a novel idea with commercial potential and evidence that you are serious about building it
- Cohort intakes advertised during 2026 were open only to SMVDU students, and asked for a named faculty mentor and a signed mentor consent form
How selection works: Applications are screened on innovation, feasibility and scalability by a three-person committee, then shortlisted applicants face a selection panel. Cohort selection is judged on innovation and uniqueness, problem-solution fit, technical feasibility, market potential, scalability, social and economic impact, team capability and readiness. To graduate the phase you need at least three months in it and an assessment by two managing committee members and the chief executive.
How to apply: Through the online application on the centre's website, or by email or physical application, with a statement of purpose, business plan, intellectual property declaration and the centre's standard forms. Enquiries go to smvdu.tbic@smvdu.ac.in.
NIDHI-PRAYAS
Grant schemeA DST-backed prototyping scheme giving innovators grant support and lab time to turn an early technology idea into working hardware.
Best for: Innovators building a hardware prototype from an early technology concept
- Idea – Prototype
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science & Technology (DST), NSTEDB
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
NIDHI-PRAYAS is the centre's prototyping scheme, funded by the Department of Science & Technology and endorsed by NSTEDB. It exists so that someone with an early technology concept can build and test real hardware without having to find the money first.
What you get
- Grant support for building a prototype
- Access to technical labs and the centre's own tinkering lab, open around the clock
- Mentoring
- A route into full incubation at the centre
Who can apply
- The centre describes it as being for emerging innovators building hardware prototypes, and the scheme's stated aims name students and young people from the region
- Beyond that the centre does not publish eligibility rules
How to apply: The centre does not publish an application form or a call for this scheme. Ask the office at smvdu.tbic@smvdu.ac.in whether it is currently taking applications.
Seventeen innovators have been supported under it so far, working on drones, diagnostics, battery swapping, cold storage, veterinary nutrition and small hydro among other things.
NIDHI Seed Support System
Grant schemeDST seed support for the centre's own incubated startups, released in milestone tranches to get a product from prototype to market.
Best for: Startups already incubated at the centre, moving from prototype to market
- Prototype – Early revenue
- Takes equity
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science & Technology (DST)
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
The NIDHI Seed Support System is the funding behind the centre's incubation phase. The Department of Science & Technology gave the centre a grant to invest in its resident startups, and the centre has disbursed most of it. The Department's own published list of incubators holding seed support includes the centre.
What you get
- Seed capital for the things that get a product to market: testing, field trials, certification and test marketing
- Support can take the form of a soft loan, equity or a seed grant
- Money is released in tranches as you hit agreed milestones, with reviews in between
Who can apply
- Startups already incubated at the centre. This is not a scheme you apply to from outside.
- You can take seed support only once across any scheme or open fund
How selection works: The centre's managing committee evaluates viability, scalability, market fit and innovation potential, then recommends to the chairperson for approval.
How to apply: There is no separate application. Seed funding is decided through the incubation application, so apply to the incubation phase and raise it there.

How to apply to SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre (SMVDU-TBIC)
About SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre (SMVDU-TBIC)
Department of Science & Technology
