इस प्रतियोगिता के बारे में
The DARPA Surgical Competition (DSC) is a prize competition from the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It seeks a minimum viable product for a scalable, manufactured, autonomous trauma surgical robot that can safely perform set procedures on its own, assist human lead surgeons in complex open trauma surgery, and learn new skills quickly.
It runs in three phases:
- Qualification (10 September – 13 November 2026): submit a detailed technical whitepaper and a video demonstration through the Central Florida Tech Grove portal. DARPA reviews entries on a rolling basis and selects up to 10 teams, and may close early once 10 are accepted.
- Workshop (15–24 January 2027): a ten-day in-person practice and data-collection event.
- Competition (20–26 March 2027): a scored, in-person assessment across three Component-Level Testing Gates and two full-scenario lanes, followed by the awards ceremony on 26 March 2027.
Qualification closes on 13 November 2026 at 16:00 EST (2:30 AM IST on 14 November 2026).
Prizes (US$3,500,000 in total, about ₹33.25 crore): the Surgical Collaboration Lane and the Surgical Independence Lane each pay US$1,000,000 (about ₹9.5 crore), US$400,000 and US$100,000 to the top three teams that meet a minimum score. The Physical Capability Gate pays US$235,000, the Rapid Learning Gate US$100,000 and the Medical Knowledge Gate US$75,000 to the top performer, and teams meeting a gate's minimum requirements can earn US$3,000 per gate.
Please note before applying from India:
- The competition is self-funded: qualified teams pay their own way to the Workshop and Competition, which take place in person at a US military installation.
- To be paid a prize, you must provide a US Social Security number or taxpayer identification number (TIN). This is a condition for payment, not for applying, and foreign nationals are subject to US and local tax on prizes.
- Systems must not include any part, software or service from companies on the DoD Section 1260H List of Chinese Military Companies, and teams need liability insurance.

समयसीमा और प्रक्रिया
चयन प्रक्रिया
DARPA reviews qualification whitepapers and video demonstrations on a rolling basis and selects up to 10 teams. At the in-person Competition Event, a joint Independent Verification and Validation team of trauma surgeons, surgical roboticists and autonomy experts scores teams across three testing gates and two surgical lanes. Lane prizes need a minimum threshold score; winners are named at the 26 March 2027 awards ceremony and paid weeks later.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
Can an Indian team apply?
Yes. The competition is open to individuals and teams of all nationalities. Those on the US Specially Designated Nationals list, and DARPA staff, contractors and their households, cannot take part.
Do I need a US taxpayer ID?
Not to apply, but to be paid. DARPA states that to receive a monetary prize you must provide a US Social Security number or taxpayer identification number (TIN). Individuals give an SSN and organisations a TIN. Information on getting a TIN is on the US IRS website.
Do we have to travel to the US?
Yes, if you qualify. The Workshop (15–24 January 2027) and the scored Competition (20–26 March 2027) are in person, with the assessment on-site at a US military installation. Teams pay their own costs.
When is the deadline?
The qualification window closes on 13 November 2026 at 16:00 EST (2:30 AM IST on 14 November 2026). DARPA reviews entries on a rolling basis and may close early if 10 teams are accepted.
Are there restrictions on hardware?
Yes. Systems must meet US Department of War rules on foreign-made robotics and telecom equipment, and must not use anything developed, made or serviced by companies on the DoD Section 1260H List of Chinese Military Companies. Teams certify this before arrival.
