How applications work
- Apply through the incubator's application form, linked from its website, or contact the TBI office.
- Registration needs PAN or Aadhaar, an executive summary of the idea, proof of permanent address, two references, a company incorporation certificate if you have one, a filled application with passport photographs of the promoters, and a signed incubatee agreement.
- Physical incubatees who want a cubicle also pay a rental fee, charged every three months, on top of the one-time registration charge.
How selection works
- The Idea Screening Committee looks at innovativeness, commercial viability, technical feasibility, social value, scalability and market traction.
- It may invite you for an informal interview and ask you to show your homework on the project.
- Once inducted, the incubatee stays through the incubator's exit policy, which covers sales, investment and headcount thresholds and a time limit by sector.
What reviewers look for
- Commitment, attitude and track record of the founders, alongside the technical idea.
- Commercial viability, and whether the product has a real market.

How the incubator works
BIT-TBI was established in 2007 and says it works to create technology-based enterprises, value-added jobs and faster commercialisation of research. Ideas are screened by an Idea Screening Committee before a founder is inducted as an incubatee. Incubatees can work in physical cubicles on campus or join as virtual incubatees. The incubator also helps with networking, mentoring, IPR support, technology transfer and access to government grant schemes.
Who can apply
Any individual or group can propose an idea, whether they are students, alumni or members of the general public. The incubator accepts ideas from across science, technology and engineering. It gives preference to ideas that use local natural resources or improve life in rural areas. Existing firms can also apply to incubate a spin-off idea.
Startup ideas and events
The incubator runs an annual Idea Fest for BIT students and an Idea Fair open to the general public, alumni and students from other campuses. Shortlisted finalists are one of its main sources of incubatees. Students and the public can also register an idea as a pre-incubation lead and take it to proof of concept.
Facilities
The campus has a product innovation centre with labs for electronics, robotics, data science, cyber security, blockchain, biomaterials and bioprocessing, and fabrication, along with a maker's space, co-working space and analytical facilities.
Who runs it
The incubator is run by a principal scientific officer with an incubation manager, an incubator administrator, an incubation associate and a young professional. A board of governors and an advisory group of industry members review its policy each year.
