Pick the right door first

CEDI runs two kinds of programme and they have different gates.

• The CEDI incubation programme is the open one. Its 2025-26 call invites students, faculty, early-stage founders, alumni and innovators, so you do not need an NIT Trichy connection.
• NAVIYA, the pre-incubation programme, is for NIT Trichy faculty and UG, PG and PhD students only. If you are outside the institute, this is not your route.
• The GENESIS calls (Entrepreneur in Residence, Pilot, Matching Investment) are MeitY-funded and narrower: electronics design and manufacturing, deep-tech software and product, and ICT. All the recent ones have closed, so watch for the next cohort.

How applications actually work

There is no standing application portal. CEDI publishes each call as a poster on its NIT Trichy page, and each poster carries its own online application link and a QR code. Watch that page — it is where every call, deadline and staff opening appears.

For incubation, the applications page also holds the paperwork you will be asked for: a Pre-Admission Response Sheet, then a Level-1 and a Level-2 template. Downloading those early tells you what CEDI wants to know before you write anything.

What the calls ask for

The GENESIS calls are the most explicit about their bar, and they are a good guide to what CEDI looks for at each stage:

• Pilot asked for full-time founders, an MVP or working prototype already built, a valid purchase or work order from a real buyer, DPIIT registration, and incorporation in a tier-2 or tier-3 city.
• Matching Investment asked for market-ready or revenue-generating startups in tier-2 or tier-3 cities, not already supported under TIDE 2.0 scale-up or SAMRIDH, and preferred teams with granted patents.

So: have the entity incorporated, have proof of demand rather than a plan for it, and be ready to name your city of incorporation.

What to weigh before you commit

CEDI's real strength is the campus around it — NIT Trichy's departmental labs, common infrastructure and student interns. If your product needs lab time or engineering hands, say in your application exactly which department's equipment you would use and why.

Incubation is a long commitment: CEDI says it commits to 24 months with a 12-month extension, and its pre-incubation chart gives 24 to 36 months. It also says a startup may leave earlier if it needs to.

CEDI is the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Incubation at NIT Tiruchirappalli. It was set up in 2012 and is registered as a Section 8 company promoted by the institute, so it is a separate legal entity that sits on the NIT Trichy campus rather than a department of it. Its office is on the third floor of the new Library building.

The centre started around technology start-ups in ICT and electronics, and it still describes SMAC and IoT as its main areas. Its recent calls reach wider: the 2025-26 incubation call names agritech, cleantech, healthtech, SaaS, AI/ML, deep-tech software and product, edtech, greentech, electronic design and manufacturing, aerospace and defence tech, sports tech, e-commerce, fintech, IoT, robotics and social innovation.

How programmes work

CEDI describes a three-step pipeline. Pre-incubation takes an idea to an MVP over six to twelve months. Incubation takes the MVP to market. Acceleration covers scale-up and mass production over six to twelve months. The two sources give slightly different lengths for the middle step: the incubation services page says CEDI commits to 24 months with a 12-month extension, while the pre-incubation call's chart gives 24 to 36 months. Either way, the agreements are described as flexible and a startup can leave earlier.

NAVIYA is the pre-incubation programme. It runs in two stages, Srijan then Virutcham, each within six months. The first is for validating the idea, building a prototype and writing a business model canvas; the second is for turning that into a working MVP and a venture. Teams that finish are onboarded into the main CEDI incubation programme. NAVIYA also reimburses MVP development expenses for selected teams.

Alongside its own programmes, CEDI issues calls under MeitY's GENESIS scheme. Three have run recently and all have closed: Entrepreneur in Residence, which offers a startup grant to early-stage teams; a Pilot programme for startups with a working prototype and a purchase or work order in hand; and a Matching Investment component that matches private investment raised, one to one, as equity. All three are aimed at electronics design and manufacturing, deep-tech software and product, and ICT, using AI/ML, IoT, VLSI and semiconductors, blockchain, cybersecurity, quantum computing and AR/VR. The EiR track has reached a third cohort.

Who can apply

It depends on the programme, and the difference matters. The 2025-26 CEDI incubation call is open beyond the campus — it invites students, faculty, early-stage founders, alumni and innovators, so an outside founder with no NIT Trichy connection can apply. NAVIYA is not: its call limits it to NIT Trichy faculty members and UG, PG and PhD students.

The GENESIS calls carry their own gates. The Pilot call asked for full-time founders, an MVP or working prototype, a valid purchase or work order from an eligible buyer, DPIIT registration, and incorporation in a tier-2 or tier-3 city. The Matching Investment call asked for market-ready or revenue-generating startups incorporated in tier-2 or tier-3 cities, that are not already beneficiaries of TIDE 2.0 scale-up or SAMRIDH, and preferred startups with granted patents.

Facilities

CEDI provides office space in the Central Library building along with office equipment — PCs, laptop access points, phones and standard office furniture — for eligible applicants. Its own facilities page adds work space, communication and computing facilities, equipment labs, a library and information centre, and training and conference rooms.

The bigger draw is the host institute. Incubatee companies are given access to NIT Trichy's common infrastructure, its departmental laboratories and its other resources for product development, and they can take on NIT Trichy students as interns. CEDI's facilities page also lists NIT Trichy centres it is well connected to, including ISRO's Space Technology Incubation Centre for the southern region, a Siemens Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing, and centres of excellence in transportation engineering, corrosion and surface engineering, AI and machine learning, energy harvesting, and energy and environmental science. Those belong to NIT Trichy, not to CEDI.

On services, CEDI runs monthly group mentoring plus individual sessions, with a mentoring team drawn from alumni and faculty, and reviews progress quarterly. It keeps a pool of corporate-sector experts, runs networking sessions, and helps with raising money, reaching markets and managerial skills.

Track record

The numbers on the site do not line up, so read them carefully. The About page says CEDI had incubated ten businesses in the previous three years, with no date on the sentence. The startup tables list more than that: thirteen graduated companies, nine ongoing ones, and five student or faculty startups. The ongoing table's own numbering skips from six to eleven. Named graduates include Silicic Innova Technologies, Navriti Technologies, Blaer Motors, GMetri Studio, SENZWIZ Technologies, Fixyard Technologies and Bolt 3D Printers. Ongoing incubatees include Greenerg Mobility Solutions, Trawello Healthcare Services and Recubitech.

Who runs it and who backs it

G. Krishnan is listed as Chief Executive Officer. Dr. M. Umapathy handles overall administration, with Dr. R. Leela Velusamy on industry and alumni relations, Dr. G. Lakshminarayanan on finance, incubation and outreach, and Dr. S.R. Balasundaram on skill training and development. A long list of NIT Trichy faculty associates is attached to the centre across ICE, production engineering, EEE, computer applications, civil, ECE, mechanical, energy and environment, and management studies.

MeitY funds CEDI's TIDE project, which is the centre's core government backing, and CEDI issues the GENESIS calls under the same ministry. Sonata Software is a long-standing corporate partner; the joint CEDI-Sonata Entrepreneurship Fund has co-sponsored competitions run by NIT Trichy's E-Cell, including Ventura. CEDI has also worked with EDII Ahmedabad on DST-sponsored faculty and entrepreneurship development programmes, and with the Asia Foundation on a women entrepreneurship project, though the pages describing that work are dated 2014 to 2017 and nothing more recent is published.

Where it is and how to reach it

CEDI is at NIT Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu 620015, on the third floor of the new Library building. There is one office and no other locations. General enquiries go to cedi@nitt.edu.
