About CIE IIITH

The Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) at IIIT Hyderabad runs incubators and accelerators for technology startups from its campus in Hyderabad. It was set up in 2008 and sits within the institute's research and innovation work. Its programmes cover deep tech, medtech, social tech, media tech and mobility, and most of them draw on IIIT Hyderabad's faculty and research labs.

How the programmes work

CIE runs three incubators. The Deeptech Incubator is its oldest and focuses on seeding and accelerating startups backed by deep tech research. Ojas is the medtech incubator, launched in 2018 with support from the biotechnology programme of DBT. AIC, the social tech incubator, was set up in 2019 to incubate and accelerate technology startups with social impact, and it operates as an Atal Incubation Centre.

Alongside the incubators sit several accelerators. Avishkar is a six-month programme for deep tech startups, and it runs two cohorts a year. Ojas Medtech accelerates startups in healthcare and life sciences. The AI in Mobility Accelerator targets ADAS, road safety and freight, and the AI in MediaTech Accelerator covers virtual production, metaverse, multimedia and journalism. The MediaTech accelerator is run jointly with Arka Media Works.

TIDE 2.0 offers two routes for early-stage founders. The entrepreneur-in-residence route is a co-creation programme that pairs founders with research from IIIT Hyderabad labs. The grant route is a three-to-six-month fellowship that helps early-stage deeptech teams validate their product and plan how to reach customers. Research Connect groups four programmes that give startups access to IIIT Hyderabad faculty and workspace: Research Cafe, Rootnode, CV Labs and Deeptech CoWorkz.

The centre also runs entrepreneurship courses and workshops for students, Product Labs to seed new products from research, a pre-incubation programme for founders who are not yet a company, mentoring, investor pitch days and talks from entrepreneurs.

Who can apply

Avishkar and Ojas take startups registered in India with a full-time founder. Ideally the startup has a basic MVP and some customer validation, and it builds on emerging technologies. TIDE 2.0's entrepreneur-in-residence route has its own rules, including an education requirement and a full-time commitment. The AIC programme is for tech-based social enterprises. The Research Connect programmes suit startups and tech teams that want to work with IIIT Hyderabad faculty.

Facilities

Startups can be incubated in CIE's office. Deeptech CoWorkz offers a dedicated workspace for AI and deeptech startups, with on-demand conference rooms. AIC has its own co-working areas, a conference room and meeting space. Access to IIIT Hyderabad's prototyping and research labs runs through the institute rather than through CIE itself. The site's pages give different figures for the total office area, so this page does not state one.

Scale

CIE's own pages give different counts. Some say 400 or more startups have been supported, while a history section says over 300. Job figures are 2,500 or more on one page and over 2,000 on another. Figures for capital raised by its startups also differ between pages, so this page does not quote one. The centre says it has engaged 10,000 or more entrepreneurs.

Who runs it

CIE's team page lists a chief executive officer alongside incubation, programme, partnership and finance staff. The social tech incubator has its own team on the same site. Mentors include professors from IIIT Hyderabad and founders and executives from industry and healthcare.

Locations

CIE is based in Hyderabad, on the IIIT Hyderabad campus. Avishkar and Ojas both run in cohorts that start twice a year, and each cohort lasts six months. Founders can reach the centre through the programme pages, which link to the application forms for each route.
