About CSB-Central Silk Technological Research Institute

CSB — Central Silk Technological Research Institute (CSTRI)

The Central Silk Technological Research Institute (CSTRI) is the country's sole R&D institution exclusively dedicated to silk technology — from raw silk processing to finished fabric. It was established in 1983 in Bengaluru (the silk capital of India) under the Central Silk Board (CSB), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Mandate and Focus

CSTRI's comprehensive mandate includes:

  • Research & Development in silk reeling, weaving, dyeing, printing, and finishing
  • Technology transfer to the silk industry across India
  • Training — covering skill development, technology, and management
  • Technical and consultancy services to industry stakeholders
  • Popularization of scientific sericulture and silk technology

National Reach

The main institute in Bengaluru is supported by 14 sub-units located in major silk clusters across India — making CSTRI a truly national institution that serves the entire value chain of the silk sector.

Startup & Innovation Relevance

CSTRI is relevant to startups and innovators in:

  • Textile technology (sustainable dyeing, finishing, smart textiles)
  • Agritech (mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing technology)
  • Sustainable fashion and eco-friendly silk processing
  • Technical textiles and biomaterial research using silk fibers

Startups working on silk-based biomaterials, sustainable textiles, or sericulture technology can connect with CSTRI for technology licensing, co-development, or technical support.
