The Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute, Tamil Nadu (EDII-TN) is a not-for-profit society established in 2001 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It operates as the apex body for entrepreneurship education and self-employment promotion in the state, functioning under the Department of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME). Based in Guindy, Chennai, EDII-TN works to build a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem across Tamil Nadu.
EDII-TN occupies a foundational role in Tamil Nadu's startup landscape. It bridges the gap between grassroots entrepreneurs and formal startup support systems by offering training, incubation, and innovation promotion services. The institute focuses on building entrepreneurial competencies among youth and adults across Tamil Nadu, supporting rapid, sustainable, and inclusive growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises.
EDII-TN has established nine Business Incubation Centres across Tamil Nadu under the Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiative (TANII), funded by the State Planning Commission. These centres benefit young entrepreneurs and students by providing structured incubation support. The institute runs the Integrated Entrepreneurship Development Programme (IEDP) and various certificate courses in entrepreneurship. EDII-TN also delivers training in entrepreneur competency development, business network building, advocacy, and business facilitation services. The institute supports MSMEs, innovators, and startups through mentorship, access to industry networks, and market linkages. Its incubation program provides physical infrastructure, technical guidance, and connections to funding sources.
First-generation entrepreneurs, students exploring startup careers, MSME owners looking to scale, and innovators developing solutions for local markets benefit most from EDII-TN's programs. The institute specifically targets aspiring entrepreneurs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across Tamil Nadu who may lack access to mainstream startup support infrastructure.
EDII-TN plays a critical role in democratizing entrepreneurship across Tamil Nadu. By running incubation centres outside Chennai and delivering training programs in smaller cities, the institute ensures that startup support reaches beyond metropolitan areas. Its focus on MSME development and innovation promotion helps strengthen the base of Tamil Nadu's economy while creating pathways for technology adoption among traditional businesses.
