Which route fits you

If you have an idea or a prototype and want space, mentoring and a path to a grant, apply to the standing call for incubation. There is no incorporation requirement stated for incubation itself, so an unregistered team with a working idea is inside the audience.

If you want grant support for a physical product, wait for the Ignition Grant call. It is a separate, dated round — applications opened in early March in 2026 and closed at the end of that month — so watch the notices rather than assuming it is always open.

If you only want a desk, ask about the co-working space directly. Pre-incubation space, flexible desks, startup cubicles and corporate incubation space are all offered on their own, without going through a cohort.

How applications work

There is no standing online application portal. Incubation applications go through the Incubation Manager, so write to kitirf@kitcoek.in or call the number on the incubator's contact page. General and co-working enquiries go to nidhitbi@kitcoek.in.

Individual calls such as the Ignition Grant publish their own guidelines and a form when the round opens, and the incubator posts both in its notices.

KIT's IRF states plainly that it charges nothing to apply to its cohorts or incubation, and that it has appointed no agency or consultant to handle applications on its behalf. Anyone offering to file your application for a fee is not acting for them.

What reviewers look for

The Ignition Grant criteria are the clearest signal of how this incubator thinks. It wants a physical product, not a concept note; a clear route to commercialisation; a prototype you can finish in twelve to fourteen months; and a founder with the technical background to build it. Age and turnover limits apply to the startup, so an older company is out of scope for that route even if the idea fits.

Selection on past Ignition rounds ran as a call for proposals, a shortlist, an induction programme for the shortlisted teams, and then a final evaluation round. Expect to present, not just to file.

For incubation generally, the incubator says only that it has a startup selection and review mechanism, and it tracks each incubatee's technology readiness level, so be ready to say where your product actually is.

Things worth knowing first

Its thrust areas are real and they shape the portfolio: agriculture, manufacturing and health dominate, and much of it is hardware. A software-only consumer idea is not excluded, but it is not what the place is built around.

The MSInS Seed Fund it channels takes compulsory convertible preference shares. Whether KIT's IRF takes equity for incubation itself is not stated anywhere, so ask before you sign.

KIT's Innovation and Research Foundation, usually written KIT's IRF, is a technology business incubator in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. It is a Section 8 not-for-profit company under the Companies Act 2013, hosted by KIT's College of Engineering Kolhapur (Empowered Autonomous) on the college's campus at Gokul Shirgaon. It is supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the NIDHI i-TBI scheme, and by the Maharashtra State Innovation Society under the state's Department of Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The i-TBI part of that matters to a founder. DST set up Inclusive TBIs specifically for tier-2 and tier-3 cities where the startup ecosystem is still young, so KIT's IRF exists to serve founders in and around Kolhapur rather than only students on the campus it sits on. Its own call for incubation is addressed to innovators, researchers, student entrepreneurs, startup founders, MSMEs and aspiring entrepreneurs.

How incubation works

KIT's IRF runs a rolling call for incubation, numbered in cohorts. Cohort 1.0 launched in April 2024, Cohort 2.0 was announced in December 2024, Cohort 3.0 in May 2025 and Cohort 4.0 in April 2026, and a general call for incubation sits open on the site between those.

It describes five ways in. Pre-incubation is for people still shaping an idea. Physical incubation gives you space on site. Virtual incubation supports startups that keep their own office. Corporate incubation is for industry-led innovation units, and academic incubation covers work started inside an institution. Its own summary of what an incubatee gets runs to grant opportunity, technical and business mentoring, IPR support, prototype and product development help, co-incubation with partner incubators, market and client connect, and introductions for funding and investment.

Who can apply

For incubation itself, the call sets no incorporation requirement, no geography gate and no category gate. If you have an idea, an innovation, a prototype or a startup, you are inside the stated audience.

The Ignition Grant is tighter, and its criteria are published. The proposal must be for a physical product rooted in technology or science with a clear route to commercialisation, and the prototype must be completable in twelve to fourteen months. Applicants are expected to have technical skills or a background relevant to the project. A startup applying should be no more than two years old and must have kept annual turnover under the published ceiling since inception. Applicants keep ownership of any intellectual property the grant produces.

The MSInS Seed Fund, which KIT's IRF channels rather than runs, requires you to be a legally recognised entity, or to register as one within three months of the incubation or pre-incubation period. It is disbursed as compulsory convertible preference shares, so it takes equity.

Facilities

The incubator's building holds incubation and co-incubation space, an incubator space, a meeting hall, a seminar hall, a centre of excellence and a space it calls the Thinkers Pond. It advertises its workspace openly: pre-incubation space for people exploring early ideas, flexible co-working desks for freelancers and small teams, dedicated startup cubicles for growing companies, and corporate incubation space. Bookings go through the incubator's own phone line and inbox. No price list is published, so ask.

Incubatees also reach the MAYURA AICTE Idea Lab, which is a lab of the host college rather than the incubator's own.

Scale

KIT's IRF profiles its incubated startups one by one, each with its founders, the month it was inducted into the incubator and a technology readiness level. Forty are listed that way, while the home page counter reads forty-one, so treat the number as roughly forty. Seventeen of them are listed as DPIIT-recognised startups with their DIPP numbers, which is a fact about the startups rather than about the incubator.

Its other self-reported counters, undated and shown only after the page's scripts run, give twelve women entrepreneurs, ten seed-funded startups, thirteen startups that have raised external funding, seven deep-tech startups, around three hundred jobs generated, fifty mentors onboarded, twenty-six formal collaborations and about a hundred and twenty programmes and events conducted. An older set of counters still sitting unused in the page source gives lower figures across the board, so these are a moving self-count rather than an audited one.

The portfolio leans agricultural and industrial, which fits Kolhapur. Named startups include Starktech Ventures, Sanrajya Agro India, Krishi Mandal, Greenmarc Agrotech, Pelagic Rear, FPC Global, Zeldatech Innovations, Illuminar Ventures, HealthLink Companion and Pokale Mobility Works. Its published thrust areas are manufacturing, agritech, healthtech, edutech, milk and food processing, IT with IoT and IIoT, drone tech, robotics and AI and machine learning. DST's own register records its thrust areas more narrowly as agritech, healthtech and manufacturing.

Who runs it

Sudhir M. Arali is the CEO. Devendra Pathak is Incubation Manager for business and operations and is the named contact for incubation applications, with Parth Hajare as Incubation Associate for connects and outreach. A separate MSInS-funded team runs startups and programmes under Sameer S. Punaskar. Dr. Mohan Vanarotti chairs the operational board and is also the Director of the host college. The operational board includes a DST scientist and the COO of IIT Dharwad's research park.

KIT's IRF names partners including Deshpande Startups, MAGIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the Wadhwani Foundation, i4C, DFIIE at DBATU Lonere and SIBIC in Kolhapur, and it is linked into ISBA, the incubator association.

Careers and events

The incubator keeps a careers page that takes a resume upload, and it has advertised internships. Its events calendar is busy and mostly open: mentor clinics, ideathons, a patent-focused competition, investor pitch days, workshops on product development and funding, and a KIT Connect series that takes the incubator into the host college's departments.
