MABIF's incubation programme is open to entrepreneurs, startups, SMEs, NGOs and larger corporations in the agribusiness sector, and it runs separate membership categories for individual farmers, startups, SMEs, NGOs and multinational corporations. What each stage expects of you

• Pre-incubation (up to 4 months): come ready to work with mentors, talk to real customers, and shape a business model. You get a drop-in workplace at this stage, not a dedicated one.
• Incubation (up to 10 months): by this point you should be organising your founding team, building a first product and working toward a first sale. You get a dedicated workplace and ongoing mentor support.
• Graduation: the focus shifts to showing customer traction, tightening your sales strategy, and getting investor-ready before raising funds and expanding into new markets.

If you run a Farmer Producer Organization

MABIF is recognised by NABARD as a Cluster Based Business Organisation and manages a network of FPOs across several districts of Tamil Nadu. FPOs formed or promoted under NABARD's national FPO scheme can ask MABIF about infrastructure access, regulatory guidance, financial-management training, access to finance products, and market linkages.

Using the facilities without full incubation

MABIF's Food Processing Centre, its NABL-accredited Food Testing Laboratory, and its Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre are also worth contacting about directly if what you need is processing capacity, product testing, or help with a patent, trademark or GI filing rather than a full incubation seat.

Madurai Agri Business Incubation Forum (MABIF) is a Section 8 non-profit company incorporated on 9 May 2018, jointly promoted by NABARD (the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). It is based at TNAU's Agricultural College & Research Institute in Y. Othakadai, Madurai, and works with agribusiness entrepreneurs, startups, SMEs, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and NGOs across southern Tamil Nadu.

Programmes

MABIF's core incubation pathway runs in three stages. Pre-incubation, for up to four months, is where a founder consults mentors, engages customers and develops a business model, with access to a drop-in workplace. Incubation, for up to ten months, gives a dedicated workplace, ongoing mentor connections, help organising the founding team, and support to build a first product and make a first sale. After that, a graduation stage focuses on demonstrating customer traction, refining a sales strategy, optimising operations, and preparing for investors before raising funds and expanding into new markets.

Alongside the core incubation track, MABIF runs Women Empowerment Programs — training, resources and support aimed specifically at women entrepreneurs in agribusiness. It also operates as a Cluster Based Business Organisation recognised by NABARD, overseeing a network of Farmer Producer Organizations spread across several districts of Tamil Nadu under NABARD's national scheme to form and promote new FPOs. In that role it offers those FPOs infrastructure access, regulatory guidance, networking, financial-management training, access to finance products, and help with market linkages.

Facilities and support

MABIF runs a Food Processing Centre with dairy processing lines for milk, ghee, ice cream, paneer and curd, a retort processing line for ready-to-eat and ready-to-serve products, a heat pump dryer, bottling and filling lines, and value-added units for bakery, noodles, chikki, health mix, millet processing and animal feed.

It also runs a Food Testing Laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories under ISO/IEC 17025:2017, covering nutritional analysis (moisture, fat, protein, fibre, ash, carbohydrate and energy), chemical analysis (including acidity, pH, dissolved solids and hardness) and microbiology (total plate count, coliforms, and yeast and mould counts).

For intellectual property, its Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre helps agribusiness ventures with patent filing, trademark registration, Geographical Indication tagging and plant variety protection. Separately, MABIF assists founders with FSSAI licensing, Importer-Exporter Code registration for export, Startup India registration, and UDYAM registration for MSMEs, and offers expo and stall support to help ventures gain visibility with industry stakeholders.

Track record

MABIF's own site counts more than a thousand total incubatees and more than 560 startups supported, alongside more than 550 Farmer Producer Organizations. It also reports more than 40,000 student visits and more than 75,000 farmer visits to its facilities. A separate page on the site describes MABIF as having incubated 487 enterprises and enrolled 550 FPOs, a somewhat different count from the site's live figures.
