Track record
What RISE Foundation IISER reports about its portfolio.
The counters on the foundation's home page are its own, undated claims: 35+ incubating startups, 50+ startups evaluated and 17+ collaborating organisations. Its Startups page names 23 companies, and none of the collaborating organisations is named anywhere.
All figures self-reported — risefoundationiiser.co.in, as of Sept 2026.
Programmes they run
Standing programmes at RISE Foundation IISER, separate from the funding calls above.
One rolling incubation route, plus a recurring entrepreneur-in-residence cohort that is currently between intakes. The foundation also runs short hands-on courses a few times a year, which are listed on its events page rather than as standing programmes.
Incubation at RISE Foundation IISER
IncubationRolling incubation for science and deep-tech founders on the IISER Kolkata campus, with lab space, instrument access, mentoring and investor introductions.
Best for: Founders building on laboratory research in biotech, advanced materials, diagnostics, clean energy, AI for science, quantum sensing, agri-biotech or photonics
- Idea – MVP
- In person
With Department of Science and Technology (NIDHI-TBI), IISER Kolkata
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
This is the foundation's main offer and it runs all year rather than as a dated cohort. RISE describes a staged path: ideas are evaluated, improved and refined from inception through the Alpha and Beta stages of incubation, with external expertise brought in as each startup needs it, from a mentor group of practising scientists, technologists and industry experts.
What you get
- Technology mentoring on the scientific or technical basis of the product, plus concept and market validation before manufacturing
- Help turning lab-stage research into something that behaves like a product
- Business mentoring, business plan creation, management training and consulting
- A desk or cabin on campus, with meeting rooms, conferencing, internet, power backup and security
- Access to IISER Kolkata's analytical and characterisation instruments, with guidance on experiment design and reading results
- On-campus workshop and fabrication resources for prototyping, and engineering guidance on manufacturability
- IP and patent guidance for research-derived inventions, contracts, and compliance help
- Introductions to investors who look at deep tech, plus pitch, data-room and financial-model preparation
- Go-to-market help: positioning, early customers, distribution partners and pilot projects
Who can apply
- Science and technology founders; no incorporation, recognition, age or category requirement is published
- Not restricted to people from the host institute. Older RISE pages invite proposals from across eastern and north-eastern India, and say the foundation is especially interested in grassroots knowledge and technology from semi-rural Bengal
- The foundation says it explicitly supports founders from underrepresented groups
- Students of IISER Kolkata and nearby institutes have a separate pre-incubation route
How selection works: not published as a set process. The foundation counts startups evaluated separately from startups incubating, so there is a screening step, but it does not describe the stages. Expect a conversation with the team and with faculty in your area, and be ready to say which stage of the Alpha or Beta path you are at.
How to apply: use the contact form on the foundation's site and choose "Incubation Application" in the "I'm reaching out about" dropdown, or write to info@risefoundationiiser.co.in. There is no separate portal and no deadline. Ask about any fee, rent or equity, and about how instrument access works in practice — the site states neither.
GENESIS EIR — Entrepreneur in Residence
FellowshipAn entrepreneur-in-residence cohort run under a MeitY Startup Hub initiative, taking early ideas towards a prototype; applications for the third edition have closed.
Best for: Aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers and early-stage startups with a technology idea
- Idea – Prototype
- In person
With MeitY Startup Hub
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
GENESIS EIR is between intakes: applications for GENESIS EIR 3.0 were open until 3 September 2026 and that window has passed. RISE describes it as an initiative of MeitY Startup Hub, and its own events page calls the GENESIS EiR Cohort a structured ideation-to-prototype track. The 3.0 in the name means three editions have run, so another is likely, but no date for a next one is published.
What you get
- Mentorship and expert guidance on taking an idea towards a working venture
- Ecosystem support through RISE and the MeitY Startup Hub network
- A structured path from early concept to a prototype
Who can apply
- Aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers and early-stage startups; no further gate is published
How to apply: registration for the third edition ran through MeitY Startup Hub's own portal, linked from the programme page on the foundation's site. Watch its events page for the next edition, or ask through the contact form. The foundation publishes no duration, cohort size or stipend for this programme, so ask before applying.

Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
RISE Foundation states on its own pages that it is supported by DST's NIDHI-TBI scheme and by IISER Kolkata, and DST's own list of incubators records it in the NIDHI-TBI category with IISER Kolkata as host institute. Neither says when the support started or when it runs out.
DST NIDHI-TBI supported technology business incubator
RISE Foundation states on its own pages that it is supported by the NIDHI-TBI scheme of the Department of Science and Technology and by IISER Kolkata. It also appears in DST's own list of incubators, in the NIDHI-TBI category, with IISER Kolkata named as the host institute and the RISE Foundation as the registered entity. Neither source gives a sanction date or a funding period, so whether the support is still running cannot be told from the published material.
How to apply to RISE Foundation IISER
Which route to take
There is one incubation route and it is not a dated cohort. RISE Foundation takes enquiries through its contact form all year, so there is no call to wait for. If you are a student at IISER Kolkata or another institute nearby, ask about pre-incubation mentoring instead — that places you inside an existing RISE startup and can count towards a BS or MS final-year project. If you want short, practical training rather than incubation, watch the events page: it runs a few hands-on courses a year, and GENESIS EIR 3.0, its entrepreneur-in-residence programme under a MeitY Startup Hub initiative, has run in three editions so far.
How applications work
Use the contact form and choose "Incubation Application" in the "I'm reaching out about" dropdown, or write to info@risefoundationiiser.co.in. There is no separate application portal, no published form and no deadline. Because the first step is an open-ended message rather than a structured form, what you write in it is the whole of your first impression — treat it as a short pitch, not an enquiry.
What to put in that first message
Lead with the science and what it does that existing options do not. RISE was built for research coming out of a lab, and its mentor pool is practising scientists and technologists, so a technical claim you can defend counts for more here than market slides. Then say plainly which of its facilities you need — the fabrication lab and clean room, one of the culture facilities, the chemical technology facility, the optics dark room, or the analytical instruments on the IISER Kolkata side. Naming the specific equipment your work needs tells them whether the campus can actually host you, which is the question they have to answer first.
How selection works
The foundation does not publish a stage-by-stage process. Its own counters distinguish startups evaluated from startups incubating, so there is a screening step, but it does not describe it. Expect a conversation with the team and with faculty in your area rather than a scored form. Its incubation path is described in Alpha and Beta stages, so be ready to say which stage you are at and what the next milestone is.
What to check before you commit
Ask three things the site does not answer. First, whether there is any fee or rent for space and whether the foundation takes equity — no page states a policy either way. Second, what access to the IISER Kolkata instruments actually means in practice: booking, charges, whether a staff member runs the samples, and turnaround. Third, whether you need to be physically on the Mohanpur campus, which is in Nadia district rather than in Kolkata city, and what that means for your team's travel.
Who this is not for
Software and consumer startups with no lab component get little from what RISE is built to give. The same is true if you need a large grant as the reason to join: the foundation describes mentoring, space, instruments, IP help and investor introductions, and says nothing on its current pages about money for incubatees. Ask about funding directly rather than assuming it.
About RISE Foundation IISER
RISE Foundation IISER is a technology business incubator on the IISER Kolkata campus at Mohanpur, in Nadia district, West Bengal. Its full name is the Research Innovation and Scientific Entrepreneurship (RISE) Foundation IISER, and it is a Section 8 non-profit company, separate from the institute that hosts it. It is supported by the NIDHI-TBI scheme of the Department of Science and Technology and by IISER Kolkata itself, and it exists to turn research from IISER Kolkata and nearby institutions into companies.
Its own account of why it started is direct: there was serious research happening at IISER Kolkata that had nowhere to go once it left the lab, with no infrastructure, no mentorship pipeline and no route to investors who would understand it. Its stated mission is to translate the ideas and IP coming out of IISER Kolkata and nearby research institutions into economic activity for the region. An older RISE page describes the foundation as a nodal hub meant to lift entrepreneurship in eastern and north-eastern India.
What it supports
The sectors it names are biotech, advanced materials, diagnostics, clean energy, AI for science, quantum sensing, agri-biotech and photonics. Its own portfolio is grouped into agriculture, biotech and biomedical, engineering, and sustainability and chemical sciences. Its investor page describes the startups it puts in front of investors as research-backed companies in biotech, materials, diagnostics, clean energy and AI for science, which is a fair summary of what it takes on.
Incubation is described as a staged path rather than a fixed-length course. The foundation says it has a systematic approach for evaluating, improving and perfecting ideas from inception through the Alpha and Beta stages of incubation, with a mentors' team of practising scientists, technologists and industry experts brought in as each startup needs them.
Who can apply
RISE Foundation does not publish a formal eligibility list. Nothing on its site sets an incorporation requirement, a DPIIT-recognition requirement, an age limit or a category gate, and nothing restricts it to people from the host institute. Its older pages say proposals are invited from all corners of eastern and north-eastern India, and that it is especially interested in grassroots knowledge and indigenous technology from its immediate surroundings, which it describes as semi-rural Bengal. Its incubation page also says it explicitly supports founders from underrepresented groups.
There is one part that is genuinely for host-institute and nearby students: pre-incubation mentoring, where students from IISER Kolkata and other institutes in the region can be placed inside RISE startups, and that placement can count towards a BS or MS final-year project. That is a route into the incubator's orbit as a student, not a startup intake.
Facilities
The foundation runs about 20,000 sq ft of lab and workspace on the campus, described as built to take an idea from the bench to a working prototype. Named parts of it are a fabrication lab with a clean room, a microbial culture facility, an animal cell culture facility, a chemical technology facility for synthesis and process development, a plant tissue culture facility, a dark room for optics and photonics work, IT space with a library, and shared services common to every startup in the building.
Alongside its own space, RISE offers co-working and office space for incubated teams: dedicated desks and cabin space, meeting and board rooms, conferencing, internet and IT, power backup and on-campus security.
The analytical instruments are a separate matter and the foundation is careful about it. Deep-tech startups usually need characterisation that is either expensive or simply unavailable outside a research organisation, and RISE says its position on the IISER Kolkata campus is what lets incubatees reach institutional laboratories and expertise. So the advanced analytical and characterisation equipment belongs to IISER Kolkata, and what RISE provides is access to it, plus technical guidance from its own Scientific and Technical Manager and affiliated faculty in designing experiments and interpreting results. No individual instrument is named on any of its pages. For prototyping, it points to on-campus workshop and fabrication resources and to engineering guidance on making a design manufacturable.
Support beyond space
Eight named services run end to end. Incubation support covers technology mentoring, concept and market validation and turning lab-stage research into something that behaves like a product, plus business mentoring, business plan help, management training and consulting. Legal and compliance support covers IP and patent guidance for research-derived inventions, including institutional IP arrangements, founder and vendor contracts, licensing, and statutory compliance. Investor liaison covers introductions to investors who look at deep tech, plus pitch, data-room and financial-model preparation and help reading a term sheet. Market penetration covers positioning, early customers, distribution partners and pilot projects. Networking and events cover startup showcases in front of investors and industry, and access to an advisory network the foundation describes as including leaders from corporate R&D institutions, other incubators, medical institutions and senior IISER faculty.
Scale
Its home page states 35+ incubating startups, 50+ startups evaluated, 17+ collaborating organisations and 20,000 sq ft of lab and workspace. None of those figures carries a date, none of the collaborating organisations is named, and its Startups page names 23 companies rather than 35 — so read the counters as its own undated claim and the named list as what can actually be checked. Named companies there include Hummsa Biotech, working on sepsis diagnostics; SciAMO Research and Instruments, in quantum sensors and optics; Monosha Biotech, in snake venom products; ChemActiva Innovations, in plant-based nano-cellulose and biodegradable films; Solaire Initiative, in portable hydrogen; Steroviz Pixels, in surgical technology; and Cowbit, in IoT collars for dairy herds.
Who runs it
The board of directors is chaired by Prof. Sourav Pal, with Prof. Ayan Banerjee, Prof. Swadhin Mandal and Prof. Sayam Sen Gupta. Its current team page lists thirteen people, including Padma Shri S. Sivaram, Dr Sharmila Mande, Dr V. Premnath and Ms. Deepanwita Chattopadhyay, but gives no titles, so it cannot be told from the site which of them are directors and which sit on the advisory board.
Events, careers and how to reach them
The events page carries cohort kick-offs, investor showcases and short hands-on courses. Recent ones were a three-day scientific entrepreneurship and 3D printing workshop and a five-day Industry-Ready Quality Control Chemist Programme covering HPLC, GC, GC-MS, UV-Vis spectrophotometry and dissolution testing. It also hosts GENESIS EIR 3.0, an entrepreneur-in-residence programme run as a MeitY Startup Hub initiative.
RISE Foundation is hiring: its careers page lists an Incubation Manager, a Scientific and Technical Manager and a Communications and Outreach Associate, all full-time on the Mohanpur campus. To reach the foundation about incubation, partnership, investment or mentorship, use the contact form on its site and pick the reason that fits, or write to its general inbox.
