It is aimed at early-stage ventures in wearable technology, assistive technology, IoT and robotics, and the stated goal is to take a high-impact idea to a workable business plan — identifying revenue streams, finding product-market fit and customer segments, and testing the product in the real world.
What you get
- Grant support for selected innovators
- Real-time pilot trials and demonstrations
- Tailored mentoring
- Work on the business model and on improving the product or technology
- Introductions to investors and customers, and access to the investor network

Who can apply
- IoT-based early-stage startups
- Teams with creative solutions to major problems in wearable and assistive technology
- A founding team with relevant experience
- A well-defined business plan with room to grow
- Individual innovators as well as startups, under two years old
How selection works: not published.
How to apply: use the incubator's incubation form and select Ignite Grant as what you are asking for. No deadline is stated.
SIF Cohort 2.0
AcceleratorA three-month accelerator of nine workshops and one-on-one mentoring for startups with a working prototype or a product in development.
Best for: Startups past the idea stage with a working prototype or a product in development
- Prototype – Early revenue
- 3 months
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
A structured three-month programme for startups past the idea stage. The incubator describes it as being for teams actively working on a prototype or on product development, with the aim of refining the product, validating the business model and getting ready for market entry. Applications are handled on a third-party platform rather than on the incubator's own form, and no dates are published on the programme page — check the application link for the current call before planning around it.
What you get
- Nine curated workshops across three months: problem validation, customer discovery and market research, prototyping and MVP development, business model and value proposition, pitching, product-market fit and customer acquisition, growth and digital marketing, financial planning, and scaling and team building
- One-on-one and group mentoring from industry experts
- A milestone roadmap with progress tracking
- Networking with mentors, advisors and the rest of the cohort
- A completion certificate and alumni support
- Eligibility for further incubation afterwards
Who can apply
- Early-stage startups with a working prototype or a product under development
- Founders committed to building and scaling the venture
- Teams that want to rework the business model and the go-to-market plan
- Teams able to commit fully to three months of workshops and mentoring
How selection works: not published.
How to apply: through the Apply Now link on the cohort page, which goes to the incubator's listing on an external application platform.
Labs & facilities
Equipment and space on campus.
The equipment list leans hardware — machining, printing and testing — which is unusual enough among campus incubators to be worth checking against what your product actually needs.
SIF Co-Working
Dedicated desks, private offices and meeting rooms, offered alongside lab and workshop access.
Incubation space
Physical incubator space at the Sri Valliappa Block on the Sona College of Technology campus.
Prototyping and machining
3D printer, CNC milling machine and CNC turning machine.
Testing equipment
Hardness testing machine, lighting testing lab and a nano calibration ultrasonic cleaner.
Support services
Help offered alongside funding and space.
Business advisory
Mentor connects, go-to-market help, business model work and due diligence support.
Market access
Market connects, plus introductions to customers, investors and angel networks.
IP & patents
Support with patents and other IP, listed among the incubator's services.
Legal & finance
Legal guidance and help with fundraising.
Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
Both recognitions were checked against the government's own published registers rather than taken from the incubator's site. Neither register states an approval date or a funding period, so neither can be read as proof that the support is current.
NIDHI inclusive Technology Business Incubator (i-TBI), Department of Science and Technology
Listed at entry 37 of DST's published List of NIDHI inclusive Technology Business Incubators (i-TBI), as host institute "Sona College of Technology" (Salem, Tamil Nadu), with website www.sonaincubations.com, thrust area "Wearables, Assistive Tech, IoT" and the foundation's own head inbox; the list was published in January 2026 and checked on 25 September 2026. This is the i-TBI register specifically — Sona does not appear in DST's separate TBI / NIDHI-TBI list, its Centres of Excellence list, its Seed Support list or its Accelerator list. The incubator's own funding page states the same thing in its own words, saying NSTEDB at the Department of Science and Technology supports its Ignite programme through the NIDHI i-TBI scheme. Neither the register nor any page gives a sanction date or a funding period, so whether the support is current cannot be told from them.
Host Institute, MSME Innovative Scheme (Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)
Listed at entry 639 of the Ministry's published List of Host Institutes for the incubation component of the MSME Innovative Scheme, as "Sona College of Technology" (SALEM, TAMIL NADU), checked 24 September 2026. This is the status that lets an innovator name the institute as their Host Institute when applying on the ministry's own portal. The list gives no approval date, no period and no status column, so whether the recognition is current cannot be told from it; and being listed is a capacity registration, not evidence that the institute has ever hosted an approved idea.
How to apply to Sona Incubation Foundation
Choosing the right route
Start with what you are asking for, not with which page you landed on. If you want space, mentoring or introductions, the open incubation form is the route and it takes applications all year. If you build wearables, assistive technology, IoT or robotics and your venture is under two years old, apply to the Ignite Innovator Grant — it is the DST-supported programme and it carries grant support, pilot trials and lab access on top of the usual incubation help. If you already have a working prototype and want a structured three months of workshops and mentoring, that is Cohort 2.0, and it is applied to separately.
How applications work
The main form is on the incubator's own site and it is short. Have ready: your venture name, founder and co-founder names, email and mobile, what your venture is, your target market, the problem, your solution, your stage, and a pitch deck. The deck is mandatory and must be a PDF, DOC or PPT under 20 MB, so export it before you start. Two fields are optional and worth filling if you can — your DPIIT recognition number and any traction you have.
You do not need a registered company. The venture-type field includes an option for an unregistered entity, so an early team can apply honestly rather than inventing a structure. If you are outside Salem, apply anyway: nothing in the eligibility limits it to the campus or to the district, and the incubator lists a virtual incubation option among its services.
Cohort 2.0 does not use this form. Its apply button goes to a third-party application platform, so treat it as a separate submission and check there whether the current call is still open — the incubator's own page does not publish cohort dates.
What reviewers look for
The Ignite programme is the only one that publishes what it wants, and it is worth reading as a checklist even if you are applying elsewhere. It asks for a creative solution to a real problem in wearable or assistive technology, a founding team with relevant experience, and a business plan with room to grow. The cohort page asks for something similar in different words: a prototype or product actually under development, a team ready to commit to three months of workshops, and a willingness to rework the business model and the go-to-market plan.
Selection stages, review panels and timelines are not published for any of the three routes, so do not wait on a schedule. If you have not heard back, use the support inbox.
Before you apply
Say plainly which of the six things on the form you want, because that is how your application gets routed. Be specific about your stage — the form offers ideation, seed, early and growth, and the cohort explicitly excludes pure idea-stage teams. If your product needs machining, printing or electrical testing, name that in the application: the incubator's published equipment is heavily hardware-leaning, and a hardware need is a reason to be there rather than a complication.
About Sona Incubation Foundation
Sona Incubation Foundation, usually written SIF, is a business incubator in Salem, Tamil Nadu. It is a separate legal body — a non-profit company registered under section 8 — and not a department of the college, though it sits on the second floor of the Sri Valliappa Block inside Sona College of Technology on Junction Main Road. It is part of the Sona Group of Institutions. The Department of Science and Technology lists it as one of its NIDHI inclusive Technology Business Incubators, the i-TBI category, under the host institute name Sona College of Technology.
The work it says it does is the ordinary incubator list: space and equipment, technical help, help raising money, introductions, legal guidance, marketing help and support with patents and other IP. Its own service list adds mentor connects, investor and angel network connects, due diligence support, go-to-market help and a virtual incubation option for founders who cannot be on site. It says it signed a co-incubation agreement with the IIT Madras Incubation Cell.
Who can apply
This is the part worth reading carefully, because a campus address often means a campus-only intake. Here it does not. The application form is public and its venture-type dropdown accepts a proprietorship, a private limited company, an LLP, a registered partnership — or no registered entity at all, so a founder who has not incorporated yet can still apply. A DPIIT number is asked for but marked optional. Nothing on the site asks you to be a Sona student, alumnus or staff member, and nothing restricts applicants to Salem or to Tamil Nadu. The Ignite grant programme states its own audience as individual innovators and startups under two years old.
The form asks which stage you are at and offers ideation, seed, early and growth, so all four are accepted. It also asks what you actually want from the incubator, and you pick from incubation support, the Ignite grant, mentoring, market connect, co-working and investor connect.
How programmes work
There are two live routes plus a cohort. The open incubation form runs on a rolling basis with no published closing date. The Ignite Innovator Grant is a focused programme for early-stage wearable technology, assistive technology, IoT and robotics ventures, supported by NSTEDB at the Department of Science and Technology through the NIDHI i-TBI scheme; selected innovators can receive grant support along with real-time pilot trials and demonstrations, tailored mentoring, work on the business model and the product, customer and investor introductions, and access to the lab and to physical incubator space. Applications for it go through the same incubation form, with Ignite Grant picked as what you are asking for.
Cohort 2.0 is a three-month accelerator for startups past the idea stage that already have a working prototype or a product in development. It runs nine workshops covering problem validation, customer discovery, prototyping and MVP work, business model and value proposition, pitching, product-market fit and customer acquisition, growth and digital marketing, financial planning, and scaling and team building. Founders get one-on-one and group mentoring, a milestone roadmap with progress tracking, a completion certificate and access to the alumni network, and finishing it makes you eligible for further incubation. Applications for the cohort are handled on F6S rather than on the incubator's own form.
Facilities
The published equipment list is a hardware list: a 3D printer, a CNC milling machine, a CNC turning machine, a hardness testing machine, a lighting testing lab and a nano calibration ultrasonic cleaner. For meetings and events there is a mini board room, a sixty-seat auditorium and an open auditorium. SIF also runs its own co-working space, offering dedicated desks, private offices and meeting rooms, and it says founders get lab and workshop facilities with it. The incubator says it can help portfolio startups hire student interns from the Sona group of institutions.
Who runs it
Dr. S.R.R. Senthil Kumar is Executive Chair and Sathya Murthy V is Head of the foundation. The board of directors includes Sri. C. Valliappa, the founder of the Sona Valliappa Group, and Mrs. Seetha Valliappa. Chocko Valliappa is listed on the team page. Seven external mentors are named, based in Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Calicut, Hyderabad, Chennai and Canada, and they include a venture capitalist, a corporate lawyer, a director at Nativelead and an associate vice president at StartupTN.
Where it is and how to reach it
The incubator is at the Sona College of Technology campus, Junction Main Road, Salem 636005, Tamil Nadu. General queries go to the support inbox, and the foundation publishes a single phone line. There is no careers page and no dated events listing on the site, though the incubator describes THINK Salem as its own nationwide startup conclave, most recently THINK Salem 2025. Two sections of the site — the startup portfolio and the co-working page — were still marked under construction when this page was checked, so there is no first-party list of the companies it has backed.
