Standing programmes at Venture Center, separate from the funding calls above.

These run continuously and are the reason to approach Venture Center outside an open funding call. They divide roughly in three: translation programmes for researchers who have a result but no company (ETA, Lab2Mkt), national schemes that Venture Center hosts on behalf of a ministry or agency (MeitY SAMRIDH, BIRAC BioNest), and its own recurring accelerator (IRP). If a funding call has closed, a standing programme is usually the way in.

A three-stage early-stage technology commercialization program aiming to bridge technology invention/innovation with a full-fledged business plan.

The Lab2Mkt program is Venture Center's flagship early-stage technology commercialization program. Structured as a three-stage process, the Lab2Mkt program aims to fill the gap between a technology invention/innovation and a full-fledged business plan backed by a successful proof-of-concept. Stage 1: Technology & IP due diligence, Market research, Risk identification, Proof-of-concept plan, Preliminary commercialization strategy / business model. Stage 2: Raising seed funds, Incorporation, Execute proof-of-concept plan, Detailed market due diligence, Engagement with Beta customers. Stage 3: Detailed business plan, Identify executive & operational team, Raise Series A financing. In exchange for taking on these business risks, Venture Center will hold an appropriate equity stake in the spin-off incorporated during the Lab2Mkt program.

Investor Readiness Program (IRP)

Accelerator

24-week cohort programme preparing startups to raise a seed or Series A round.

Cohort 3 is healthcare-only: devices, diagnostics, therapeutics and rehabilitation, with a stated preference for cancer, metabolic, immunological and musculoskeletal disorders, and for women founders.

Who qualifies: startups past proof-of-concept, past prototype, or at pre/early revenue, aiming to raise Rs 1-10 crore within the next twelve months. Founders must commit three hours a week to mentoring sessions.

What you get: a reward grant of up to Rs 10 lakh per startup, pitch deck and financial projection work, and matchmaking across 20+ investment partners including Ankur Capital, Blume Ventures, Chiratae Ventures and Endiya. Kotak Alternate Asset Managers is the cohort partner.

There is a Rs 5,000 commitment fee, which is refundable. Applications are by Google Form.

Venture Center runs a virtual track, so you can join without relocating.

The important distinction is residency. Pre-incubation and virtual incubation give you mentoring and ecosystem access without taking space on campus, which matters if you cannot move to Pune. Resident incubation is where the labs and instruments come in, and it is the only reason the physical location is worth paying for. Venture Center publishes the size of each space option but not its price, so treat the rent as a conversation rather than a published rate.

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

This is the strongest argument for choosing Venture Center over a generalist incubator, and the hardest thing for a competing incubator to replicate. A cleanroom, a biopharma analysis centre, fume-hooded lab modules and a prototyping workshop are capital equipment a seed-stage science venture cannot buy. If your development plan needs any of them, access is worth considerably more than the Rs 5 lakh grants attached to most of the funding calls here.

Science ventures fail on things that are not science: an unfiled patent, a device classification discovered late, a licence that was never properly assigned. These services exist for that, and the technology transfer office in particular reflects Venture Center sitting inside CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, where moving institutional IP into a company is routine rather than exceptional.

For an applicant these matter less as prestige than as plumbing. Each recognition is what allows a particular pot of public money to be routed through this incubator, so the list is a reasonable predictor of which national schemes you can access here without applying to the central agency yourself.

What the money at Venture Center actually looks like

Venture Center runs a lot of small, equity-free cheques and one large equity one. Across the eight programmes we track, seven are grants and one is an equity investment.

The grants cluster between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. The BFI-BIOME fellowship is Rs 3 lakh, the BRBNMPL and One Health grants Rs 5 lakh each, the Nag Foundation oncology grant Rs 7.5 lakh, Envalior Rs 10 lakh, and the Cummins climate grant Rs 20 lakh. Several are explicitly equity-free.

Half of them are corporate CSR money. BRBNMPL, Cummins, Envalior and Nag Foundation are all CSR-funded, each carrying its own thematic constraint — currency-note manufacturing sustainability, climate, materials, oncology. This matters when you apply: you are not pitching Venture Center so much as pitching a corporate donor whose theme Venture Center is administering.

The one large cheque is different in kind. The BIRAC LEAP Fund is up to Rs 1 crore and is an equity investment, not a grant, requiring willingness to give up equity and at least 51 percent Indian ownership.

The practical read: if you want prototype and proof-of-concept money without dilution, this is a strong fit, but plan around a thematic CSR call rather than a general application. If you need growth capital, LEAP is the only instrument here at that size and it prices in equity.

Who Venture Center suits, and who it does not

Good fit. Science-based ventures that need instruments more than they need cash. The strongest reason to choose Venture Center over a generalist incubator is physical: a MedTech cleanroom, a biopharma analysis centre, fume-hooded lab modules and a prototyping workshop on a campus inside CSIR-NCL. If your development plan involves wet-lab work or hardware iteration, that access is worth more than a Rs 5 lakh grant.

Also a good fit. Academic and public-lab researchers. Between ETA, Lab2Mkt and the NCL setting, the programmes are unusually well shaped for people whose starting asset is a result and an institutional affiliation rather than a company.

Weaker fit. Software-only, consumer and D2C startups. Venture Center describes itself as sector-agnostic, but the funding calls, the facilities and the CSR themes all point at life sciences, materials, energy and agriculture. A pure SaaS company would draw little benefit from the thing that makes this place distinctive.

Worth knowing before you plan around it. Venture Center publishes space sizes for its residency options but not prices, so budget for a conversation rather than a published rate card.

Venture Center is India's premier award-winning technology business incubator, set up as an initiative of CSIR's National Chemical Laboratory (NCL). Ventures at ideation through early revenue stages with a core scientific/technical differentiation are the strongest fit.
