Check first that this route is open to you

VCIS is a campus route. The institute's own words are "students, faculty, and staff", and its Innovation and Start-up Policy is addressed to "Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni" of VIIT. If you are a VIIT student, a VIIT alumnus with a valid alumni ID, or a member of its faculty or staff, read on. If you have no VIIT connection, there is no published way in and no enquiry inbox for one — look for an incubator with an open intake instead.

How applications actually work

• There is no online portal and no deadline. The policy says a circular and notification go up on the notice board and on the institute's NISP webpage through the year, so watch both rather than waiting for a cohort announcement.
• You apply on a prescribed form, and you submit it twice — soft copy and hard copy — together with a slide presentation. Budget time for the paperwork; this is an on-campus, in-person process.
• The ED Cell is the office that runs it. Your departmental ED Cell coordinator is the quickest first stop, and the head of the ED Cell is the named point of contact in the policy.
• Alumni: your idea goes to the committee for approval before you are admitted, you need a valid alumni ID, and the committee sets a nominal charge case by case. Ask what that will be before you commit.

How selection works

Three things are assessed: the application form, the slide presentation and a direct interview with the review committee. There is no written scoring scheme published.

What happens next is unusual and worth knowing before you apply. You are not accepted or rejected into one programme — you are placed in one of four levels: no idea yet but keen, an idea needing guidance, a design or prototype needing product help, or a finished product needing IPR, technology transfer and commercialisation help. Then you join a student, alumni or faculty interest group and are assigned faculty mentors. So an honest application that puts you in the right level is better than one that overstates how far along you are; the level decides the kind of help you get.

What the committee is looking for

• Something buildable at the institute. The route runs through the AICTE IDEA Lab and the research labs, so an idea that uses prototyping, electronics, robotics or data infrastructure fits the support that exists.
• Evidence you can show, not describe. Seed support goes to members with a proof of concept or a prototype the committee judges marketable and scalable, so bring the thing itself to the interview.
• A plan the institute can back beyond mentoring. It says it will help arrange bank loans, introductions to venture and angel investors, and proposals to government and non-government funding agencies — so be ready to say which of those you need.

Before you sign up, as a student

• Your academics gate your eligibility: no more than five standing arrears and no disciplinary action.
• You need a letter of consent from your parents once your idea is selected.
• A venture runs from your third to your eighth semester, and you take a six-semester entrepreneurship course from the third semester.
• Seed money is repayable — within two years of receiving it, or six months after you graduate.
• If you want to keep running the start-up after final year, you have to write to the review committee and justify your contribution with proof.

Before you sign up, as faculty

• You may be owner, founder, co-founder, promoter, adviser, mentor or consultant, but you may not hold a managerial role such as CEO and may not draw a salary from your own start-up.
• If the institute pays your salary, the institute takes a stake, limited to 20% of your share or 9.5% of the total, whichever is smaller.
• You can take sabbatical or leave for a semester or a year to work on it, and you may spend more than a fifth of office time advising it, provided your teaching and administrative duties are unaffected.
• Keep your institute research and your company work clearly separated, and do not use academic project staff on the company's work. The policy says both plainly.

On intellectual property

Ask early who will own what. If you use institute facilities or funds substantially, or the work comes out of your curriculum, the IP is jointly owned with the institute. If you build it outside office hours without institute facilities and outside the curriculum, it is yours. That single distinction is worth settling in writing before you start using the labs.

Vignan's Institute of Information Technology (VIIT) is an autonomous engineering college at Duvvada in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, established in 2002 and promoted by Dr. Lavu Rathaiah, Chairman of Lavu Educational Society, Guntur. Its innovation and start-up work runs through Vignan's Center for Innovation and Start-ups (VCIS), set up after the institute adopted the Ministry's National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP-2019), alongside an Innovation Cell, an Entrepreneurship Development Cell (ED Cell), an IPR Cell and an AICTE IDEA Lab. VIIT is affiliated to JNTU-GV and approved by AICTE.

Who can apply

This is a campus route and VIIT says so in its own words. The institute's description of VCIS reads: the initiative "enables students, faculty, and staff to actively engage in innovation and entrepreneurship activities". The institute's own Innovation and Start-up Policy goes one step wider — its cover page is addressed "For Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni", and the selection clause says "Students, alumni and faculty members of VIIT are screened based on the scrutiny of the application form, PowerPoint presentation and direct interview". Alumni have their own clause: a member with a valid alumni ID may join once the committee approves the idea, and a nominal charge is set case by case. Nothing in the policy admits a founder with no VIIT connection, and the institute publishes no intake, deadline or enquiry route for one. If you are not a VIIT student, alumnus, faculty member or staff member, this page is not a door you can walk through.

How the start-up route works

The policy describes a year-round intake rather than a dated cohort. A circular and notification are put up on the notice board and on the institute's NISP webpage through the year, and an interested student, alumnus or faculty member applies on a prescribed form, submitted in both soft and hard copy, with a slide presentation. Applicants are screened on the form, the presentation and a direct interview by the review committee. Those taken on are sorted into four levels — people with no idea yet but an interest in starting up, people with an idea who need guidance, people with a design or prototype who need help building a product, and people with a product who need help with IPR, technology transfer, commercialisation and staying in the market. They are then grouped as a Student, Alumni or Faculty Special Interest Group and given faculty mentors.

Student founders carry extra conditions. Parental consent must be filed once an idea is selected, a venture may run from the third to the eighth semester, the student must have no more than five standing arrears and no disciplinary action on record, and must take a six-semester entrepreneurship course from the third semester. Seed money received has to be returned within two years of receipt, or six months after graduating.

What selected members get

The policy lists mentoring by faculty experts, with technical input, infrastructure, networking, branding, IP protection and support through technology transfer and commercialisation. Members with a proof of concept or a prototype the committee judges marketable and scalable can be given seed funding by the VIIT management through the pre-incubation centre, released in three phases against progress. The institute also says it will help arrange bank loans and introductions to venture and angel investors, and guide members submitting proposals to government and non-government funding agencies.

The academic concessions matter as much as the money. A student may earn credit for work on a prototype or business model, may substitute the start-up for a mini or major project, seminar or summer training, may take a semester or year break to work on the venture, is given special permission to sit examinations, and may use a hostel or pre-incubation address to register the company while still studying. Faculty and staff may take sabbatical or leave to work on a start-up and return.

IP and faculty ventures

The policy is explicit on ownership. Where institute facilities or funds are used substantially, or the IP comes out of curriculum or academic work, the IP is jointly owned by the inventors and the institute. Where it does not — built outside office hours, without institute facilities, outside the curriculum — the inventors own it outright and may license it as they see fit. A faculty member may be owner, founder, co-founder, promoter, adviser, mentor or consultant in their own start-up, but may not hold a managerial role such as CEO and may not draw a salary from it. Facilities

The AICTE IDEA Lab is described by the institute as "a pre-incubation platform where students convert ideas into tangible projects and viable start-ups through hands-on prototyping, mentoring, and access to fabrication resources". AICTE sanctioned it on 17 June 2021 for a stated duration of two years. Its published equipment includes a laser cutter, a CNC wood router, PCB routing and oven machines, a soldering and desoldering station, several 3D printers, a 3D scanner, workstations and a sublimation heat press. The institute lists it alongside a Center for Innovation, a Robotics Laboratory, an IoT and Big Data Analytics Lab, an Advanced VLSI Lab and an Advanced Antenna and Signal Processing Lab. The policy says the facility is open around the clock to students, staff and faculty across departments. There is no coworking or office space offer on the site.

Who runs it

Dr. J. Sudhakar, Principal, chairs the VCIS and ED Cell team. Dr. A. Sampath Dakshina Murthy heads VCIS and coordinates NISP, Dr. M. Srinu is in charge of the ED Cell and Dr. Bharat Kumar CH coordinates the IPR Cell, with departmental ED Cell coordinators and Institution's Innovation Council ambassadors across every branch. Dr. V. Madhusudhana Rao, the Rector, is President of the Institution's Innovation Council and of the policy committee.

Partnerships

VCIS publishes a list of agreements used for innovation and entrepreneurship work: IIIT-H DATA I-HUB Foundation for 2025-26 to 2029-30, Innomatics Research Labs for 2025-26, an association with APSCHE for student start-up support, agreements with MSME and with NRDC across several years, and agreements with TiE Grade Hyderabad and Million Minds Mumbai. The institute is also listed by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises as a Host Institute for the incubation component of the MSME Innovative Scheme.
