Which products require a mandatory ISI Mark?
Over 300 categories have mandatory BIS certification, including electrical wires and cables, LPG cylinders and fittings, pressure cookers, helmets, packaged drinking water, cement, steel bars, and many others. The full list is notified by BIS.
How is the ISI Mark different from the BIS CRS?
The ISI Mark is for domestically manufactured products. BIS CRS applies to imported products in specified electronics categories (mobile phones, laptops, power banks, LEDs, etc.) — importers register their product with BIS rather than going through the full ISI licence process.
How often is the BIS licence renewed?
BIS licences are issued for one year and must be renewed annually. BIS also conducts periodic surveillance visits and market sampling throughout the licence period.
Can a product be exported without the ISI Mark?
Yes. The ISI Mark is a requirement for the Indian domestic market. Export products do not require the ISI Mark unless the importing country's regulations or buyer specifications require it.
Is a separate BIS licence needed for different products?
Yes. Each product–standard combination requires a separate licence. A manufacturer of two electrical products covered by different IS standards needs two licences.
What happens if BIS finds a non-conformity during a factory visit?
BIS issues a notice for correction. If the non-conformity is not resolved within the prescribed period, the licence may be suspended or cancelled.
