Checkmate – Chess is a competitive chess tournament organised by Scaler School of Technology, built around the tagline "Outthink. Outmaneuver. Outlast." It is designed for players who want to test their tactical sharpness and strategic mastery against a fresh pool of opponents in a fast-paced blitz format.
Format and Structure The tournament runs in two stages. Stage 1 is an online qualifier hosted on Lichess in an Arena format, where players compete to secure a place in the finale. Stage 2 is an offline 7-round Swiss System tournament held at the college cafeteria, with final standings determining the prize winners. The time control throughout is 5 minutes plus a 3-second increment (5+3), a format that rewards quick calculation and decisive play.
Who It's For The event targets college students and competitive chess enthusiasts who want structured tournament experience. Registration requires full name, phone number, Lichess ID, college name, and college ID, confirming it is aimed at the student community. Team size is limited to one player per entry.
Rules and Governance Standard FIDE Laws of Chess apply, including the Touch-Move rule. Players must report on time; failing to take a seat within two minutes of the round start results in a forfeit. Only the approved Chess Clock App may be used on mobile phones, which must remain on silent or DND. The first illegal move carries a one-minute penalty to the opponent, while a second illegal move results in a loss. The Buchholz system is used as the primary tie-break criterion, and the Chief Arbiter's decision is final.
Fair Play and Disqualification Cheating, outside assistance, or unsportsmanlike conduct leads to immediate disqualification. Other grounds include providing false registration details, using a device for anything other than the approved chess clock, repeated rule violations, disrespectful behaviour toward participants or organisers, failure to follow the Chief Arbiter's instructions, late arrival, and any attempt to manipulate results or standings.
Prizes The total prize pool is ₹6,000, distributed as ₹3,000 for the winner, ₹2,000 for the first runner-up, and ₹1,000 for the second runner-up.
Communication All updates, schedules, and qualification details are shared through the contact details provided at registration and on the Unstop event page. Participants are advised to check these platforms regularly.
