ICARUS — CanSat Telemetry Analysis Challenge is a software-based competition that tests your programming, data analysis, and problem-solving skills in the context of aerospace telemetry. Organized by RV University, Bangalore, this offline event invites undergraduate students from RV University and other colleges to decode simulated CanSat flight data, detect hidden anomalies, and reconstruct the mission.
What You’ll Do
Participants will receive simulated CanSat flight telemetry containing parameters such as altitude, GPS coordinates, temperature, battery readings, and other flight data — including hidden sensor anomalies. Your mission is to:
- Parse and process the provided telemetry data.
- Analyze altitude, GPS, temperature, battery, and other sensor readings.
- Reconstruct and analyze the CanSat's flight trajectory.
- Create meaningful visualizations of the telemetry.
- Detect and investigate hidden sensor anomalies.
- Use data-driven reasoning to determine what occurred during the simulated flight.
- Submit the final analysis, scripts, and visualizations for evaluation.
Event Format
ICARUS is conducted as a single-round challenge with the following phases:
- Briefing – Overview of the challenge, dataset, objectives, and submission requirements.
- Analysis & Build Phase – Teams analyze telemetry data, develop solutions, reconstruct flight trajectories, generate visualizations, and investigate anomalies.
- Submission – Teams submit final scripts and visualizations before the deadline.
- Evaluation – Submissions are judged on anomaly detection, trajectory accuracy, analytical reasoning, visualization, and code quality.
- Result Declaration – Winners are announced after evaluation.

Eligibility & Requirements
Open to undergraduate students from RV University and other colleges. Recommended skills include basic programming, data analysis, Python, CSV data handling, data visualization, and basic statistics. Participants must bring their own laptops and complete the challenge using their systems. Teams may use their preferred programming tools and libraries.

- Each team must consist of 1–3 participants.
- Participants must bring their own laptops.
- All analysis and development must be completed within the allotted venue.
- Teams must submit final scripts and visualizations before the deadline.
- Submitted solutions must be original work.
- Sharing solutions or collaborating with other teams is strictly prohibited.
- Participants must follow organizer instructions and maintain professional conduct.
- The decision of the judging panel is final and binding.
