Programmes they run
Standing programmes at Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute, separate from the funding calls above.
Only BETF is described as open to founders from outside the campus. NewGen IEDC is a students' scheme whose stated grant period has ended, and the Entrepreneurship Development Centre is a students' elective programme whose published activity log stops in 2013. An Innovation and Startup Promotion Cell is named as running pre-incubation, incubation and acceleration programmes, but no such programme has a page, an eligibility statement or an intake anywhere on the site, so we have not written it up. Nothing here has a published application form, open call or deadline.
The university's Section 8 incubator, open on paper to outside founders as well as students, with no published application route.
Best for: Students, researchers, faculty and outside founders, especially hardware, medtech, agri and food ventures that need lab access
- Idea – Early revenue
- In person
With Startup TN, ICCW, IIT PALS, YUVA, Shakthi Masala Startup Awards
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
BETF is described by the university as its Section 8 not-for-profit incubator, working under the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre of Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. It is the only part of the university that says in writing it works with external innovators as well as students, researchers and faculty, and the facilities page says the centre hosts early-stage ventures, domain-specialised startups and mature enterprises.
What you get
- Co-working and incubation space with plug-and-play infrastructure, and a separate advanced space for ventures already trading
- Access to the prototyping labs, fabrication tools and testing facilities on campus
- Mentorship from industry experts, entrepreneurs and investors
- Help applying for seed funding and grants through the Department of Science and Technology, the Ministry of MSME, StartupTN and EDII Tamil Nadu
- Startup bootcamps, workshops and masterclasses
- Support with company registration, intellectual property and business model development
Who can apply
- Students, researchers, faculty and external innovators, in BETF's own words
- No incorporation requirement, geography gate, sector gate or stage gate is published
- Stated sector focus is medtech and life sciences, Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, agri tech and food processing, environmental and sustainable technologies, and defence and rural innovation
How selection works: not published.
How to apply: there is no form, portal, open call or deadline, and the centre's own Contact Us link goes nowhere. The only route is to write to the university at contact@drmgrdu.ac.in, or call the switchboard, and ask for the Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
DST NewGen IEDC
Grant schemeA Department of Science and Technology grant for student innovators, which the university's own pages describe as running 2017 to 2022.
Best for: Science and technology students of the institute working on a prototype
- Idea – Prototype
- In person
- Grant support for selected startups
With Department of Science and Technology (NSTEDB), EDII Ahmedabad
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
NewGen IEDC, the New Generation Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre, is a scheme of the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board at the Department of Science and Technology, implemented by EDII Ahmedabad. The university says it received an institutional grant under it, managed by the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre of Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and describes it as a five-year grant covering 2017 to 2022. No page says it was renewed, so treat it as between grants unless the centre tells you otherwise.
What you get
- Funding for student prototypes with a route to commercialisation
- A dedicated instrumentation facility and co-working space for student entrepreneurs
Who can apply
- Science and technology students of the institute. Nothing on these pages opens the scheme to founders from outside the campus.
How selection works: not published.
How to apply: not published. Ask the Abdul Kalam Centre through the university's general address.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre of Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Centre of ExcellenceThe campus centre that BETF sits under and that manages the university's NewGen IEDC grant.
Best for: Founders and students looking for the campus body that runs incubation, prototyping and the grant work
- In person
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
The Abdul Kalam Centre is the umbrella the university puts over its startup work. BETF operates as a hub under it, it manages the institute's DST NewGen IEDC grant, and the startups the university writes up are described as incubated at the centre. Its published team is a dean, a research associate and a research scientist.
The university also names a Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development, CIED, in the same breath, described as supporting student and faculty entrepreneurs with infrastructure, mentorship and funding, and an Innovation and Startup Promotion Cell said to run pre-incubation, incubation and acceleration programmes in defence, electric mobility, healthcare and deep technology. Neither has a page, an eligibility statement or an intake of its own, so the centre and BETF are the parts you can actually act on.
How to apply: the centre publishes no contact of its own. Write to the university at contact@drmgrdu.ac.in.
Entrepreneurship Development Centre
Centre of ExcellenceThe university's older entrepreneurship cell, offering electives and awareness workshops to enrolled students; its published activity log stops in 2013.
Best for: Students enrolled at the university who want entrepreneurship electives and workshops
- In person
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details
The Entrepreneurship Development Centre is a separate cell from the Abdul Kalam Centre and much older. It says its aim is to turn job seekers into job creators and to help students incubate technology ventures, and it points enrolled students at entrepreneurship electives run by the Department of Management Studies, covering business plan frameworks, supply chain, strategic management, social entrepreneurship, micro finance, micro enterprise development, project management and business economics.
Its page also carries a long table of entrepreneurship weeks, idea generation workshops and talks. That table runs from 2010 to 2013 and stops, so the page is best read as a record rather than a current offer.
Who can apply
- Students enrolled at the university, through normal course registration. This is not a route for outside founders.

Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
We checked the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board's published list of Technology Business Incubators on 24 September 2026 and the institute is not on it, so it is not a DST-supported TBI. Its Institution's Innovation Council, the Ministry of Education body, has been star-rated: four stars for 2018-19, four and a half for 2019-20, four for 2020-21 and three and a half for 2023-24. An IIC rating is a rating of campus innovation activity, not an incubator recognition and not a funding award.
Host Institute, MSME Innovative Scheme (Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)
Listed at entry 577 of the Ministry's published List of Host Institutes for the incubation component of the MSME Innovative Scheme, as "Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute" (THIRUVALLUR, TAMIL NADU), checked 24 September 2026. This is the status that lets an innovator name the institute as their Host Institute when applying on the ministry's own portal. The list gives no approval date, no period and no status column, so whether the recognition is current cannot be told from it; and being listed is a capacity registration, not evidence that the institute has ever hosted an approved idea.
NewGen IEDC institutional grant, Department of Science and Technology (NSTEDB)
The university states on its own research pages that it received a NewGen IEDC institutional grant from the Department of Science and Technology, managed by its Abdul Kalam Centre, and describes it as a five-year grant covering 2017 to 2022. No page says it was renewed, so assume the window has closed unless the centre says otherwise. This is a student-innovation grant, not an incubator recognition: the institute does not appear in NSTEDB's published list of Technology Business Incubators, so it is not a DST-supported TBI.
How to apply to Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute
Check whether there is anything to apply to first
Dr. M.G.R. ERI publishes no application form, no open call, no intake window and no deadline for incubation at BETF. The Contact Us link in its own innovation and entrepreneurship menu is dead, and so are the Courses and Experts links beside it. Nothing on the site tells you the centre is currently taking startups in. Before you put work into an approach, assume you are starting a conversation rather than entering a process.
Write in cold, and address it to a person
The only address the university publishes is its general one, contact@drmgrdu.ac.in, and the switchboard on 044 2378 2176 or 044 2378 2186. A general university inbox will not know what an incubation enquiry is, so name what you want in the subject line and ask for it to reach the Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, who is also the chief executive of Benz Emerge Technology Foundation. Say up front that you are an outside founder, because almost everything else on these pages is about students.
Lead with the equipment you need
The strongest thing this centre publishes is its kit list, and it is specific: bio 3D printing, resin and filament printing, 3D scanning and licensed CAD, welding and precision drilling for mechanical testing, and a food lab with a bomb calorimeter, sealing equipment and moisture meters for shelf-life work. If your product needs one of those, say which one and what you would do on it. A hardware, medtech, agri or food venture has a much clearer reason to be here than a pure software team.
Match the stated sectors
BETF names medtech and life sciences, Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, agri tech and food processing, environmental and sustainable technologies, and defence and rural innovation. A separate line adds electric mobility, healthcare and deep technology. Frame your venture inside one of those rather than asking in general terms.
Do not count on NewGen IEDC
The DST NewGen IEDC grant is the one funding route the university documents, and its own pages describe it as a five-year grant covering 2017 to 2022, with no statement that it was renewed. It is also a students' scheme by design. If funding is why you are approaching, ask directly what is live now rather than assuming the NewGen IEDC page reflects today.
Treat the published numbers with care
The counts on these pages contradict each other, none of them is dated, and the small current-sounding numbers are the more useful ones: a handful of startups on the pre-incubation desks, a handful more in the BETF space. Ask how many teams are resident now and how many outside founders they have taken, and you will learn more than the headline tiles tell you.
About Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute
Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute is a deemed-to-be university in Maduravoyal, Chennai. Its startup work runs through Benz Emerge Technology Foundation (BETF), which the university describes as its Section 8 not-for-profit incubator, sitting under the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre of Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship on the same campus.
How the startup side is organised
Three bodies are named across the university's innovation and entrepreneurship pages, and they overlap. BETF is the incubator and the legal entity. The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development, which the university shortens to CIED, is described as the campus centre that supports student and faculty entrepreneurs with infrastructure, mentorship and funding. An Innovation and Startup Promotion Cell, or ISPC, is described in one sentence as a non-profit running pre-incubation, incubation and acceleration programmes in defence, electric mobility, healthcare and deep technology. Nothing else about ISPC is published anywhere on the site, so treat it as a statement of intent rather than a programme you can apply to.
Separately, the university runs an older Entrepreneurship Development Centre through its Department of Management Studies. That page offers entrepreneurship electives to enrolled students and lists workshops and entrepreneurship weeks, but its published activity log runs from 2010 to 2013 and stops there.
Who can apply
BETF's page is the only place the university says an outsider is welcome. It says the hub enables students, researchers, faculty and external innovators to turn ideas into market-ready ventures, and the facilities page says the centre hosts early-stage ventures, domain-specialised startups and mature enterprises. No incorporation requirement, geography gate, sector gate or stage gate is published.
The one programme with a documented funding source, DST NewGen IEDC, is different. It is a Department of Science and Technology scheme aimed at science and technology students, run through the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board and implemented by EDII Ahmedabad, and the university's own research pages describe the grant as a five-year institutional grant covering 2017 to 2022. Nothing on the site says it was renewed, and nothing opens it to founders from outside the campus.
How to apply
There is no application route published. The university's innovation and entrepreneurship section has no application form, no portal, no open call, no intake dates and no deadline, and the Contact Us, Courses and Experts items in that section's own menu are dead links that go nowhere. No email address or phone number for BETF, CIED, ISPC or the Abdul Kalam Centre appears anywhere. The only contact the site gives is the university's general address, contact@drmgrdu.ac.in, and its switchboard on 044 2378 2176 or 044 2378 2186. A founder who wants in has to write in cold and ask for the Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Facilities
The facilities are the most concrete thing the university publishes, and they are unusually well documented for a campus incubator. There is a co-working space, a pre-incubation workspace of dedicated desks, an AI and application development bay, and a separate advanced co-working area run under BETF for ventures that are already trading. A prototyping facility covers hardware build and iteration. A soft fabrication lab holds 3D scanning equipment and licensed CAD tools including SolidWorks. A 3D printing farm runs filament printers for PLA and ABS parts, a resin printer for high-resolution and biomedical parts, and a bio 3D printing unit for tissue-mimicking constructs used in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and organ-on-chip work. A collaborative space holds meeting rooms with smart televisions and video conferencing. Two testing labs round it out: a mechanical fabrication lab with arc and TIG welding, grinders, saws and precision drilling for stress, safety and endurance testing, and a food testing and packaging lab with a bomb calorimeter, sealing equipment, moisture meters and multi-parameter analysers.
The sectors BETF says it focuses on line up with that kit: medtech and life sciences, Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, agri tech and food processing, environmental and sustainable technologies, and defence and rural innovation.
What it says it offers
Alongside space and equipment, BETF lists mentorship from industry experts, entrepreneurs and investors, startup bootcamps, workshops and masterclasses, and support with company registration, intellectual property and business model development. It also says it facilitates seed funding and grants through the Department of Science and Technology, the Ministry of MSME, StartupTN and EDII Tamil Nadu. Read that as help applying to those schemes, not as recognition by them. It says it has enabled scale-up support through partnerships with Startup TN, ICCW, IIT PALS, YUVA and the Shakthi Masala Startup Awards.
Scale
The centre names thirteen companies it has incubated, across app development, food technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, engineering services, e-waste recycling, acoustics and VR education. Beyond that the numbers do not agree with each other. The BETF page says it has mentored and incubated over forty startups and supported more than 180 student innovations through NewGen IEDC funding, while the university's research pages say the NewGen IEDC grant funded twenty-five student prototypes and produced seven startups. None of the figures carries a date. The one count that is specific and current-sounding is small: the facilities page says five startups were using the pre-incubation desks, five more were in the BETF advanced space, and two were in the AI bay when it was written.
Recognition
The institute's Institution's Innovation Council, the Ministry of Education body, has been star-rated four times: four stars for 2018-19, four and a half for 2019-20, four for 2020-21 and three and a half for 2023-24. The institute is not in the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board's published list of Technology Business Incubators, so it is not a DST-supported TBI.
Who runs it
Dr. J. Arun Kumar is named as Dean of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Abdul Kalam Centre and chief executive of BETF. Dr. V. S. Priyadharshini is a research associate and Dr. D. Jeeva Jothi a research scientist at the centre.
Locations
The campus is on E.V.R. Periyar Salai, the NH4 highway, at Maduravoyal in Chennai. The university also lists a corporate office on G.N. Chetty Road in T-Nagar, Chennai. The university runs a careers page for its own staff vacancies.
