Track record

What JSSATEB-STEP (Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park), Bengaluru reports about its portfolio.

Every number here is the incubator's own, undated, and taken from its current site. Its pages do not agree with each other: the homepage says more than 150 startups incubated, an older page refers to 200 ventures, and the startups page names 28 companies. The homepage's own animated counters render as zeros, so ignore those. Treat the figures as a claim, not a measurement.

150Startups supportedStated as "150+" and undated. An older incubator page instead refers to 200 ventures, and the startups page names 28 companies — the figures on their own sites do not agree.
500Entrepreneurs supportedStated as "500+ Entrepreneurs Groomed" and undated. This counts people put through the incubator's programmes, which is a different and larger number than startups incubated.

All figures self-reported — jssatebstep.com, as of Sept 2026.

Programmes they run

Standing programmes at JSSATEB-STEP (Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park), Bengaluru, separate from the funding calls above.

Three programmes, sorted by how far along you are: twelve-month incubation, six-month acceleration, three-month mentorship. One application form serves all three. No deadlines or cohort dates are published, so treat the intake as rolling. Neither programme page states a fee or an equity policy — ask before you commit.

Twelve-month residential incubation for early-stage teams with an idea or a first prototype, open to founders from outside the college.

Best for: Early-stage founders with an idea or first prototype who can work full time and be on campus

  • Idea – MVP
  • 12 months
  • In person
  • Grant support for selected startups
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

The main route in. It runs twelve months and expects you on the STEP campus, working on the venture full time.

What you get

  • A dedicated workspace on campus, with the labs, meeting rooms and prototyping facilities that go with it
  • Seed funding support, routed through a JSS startup fund and government schemes and described as subject to availability
  • Mentoring from industry veterans and an entrepreneur-in-residence
  • Legal and accounting assistance from in-house consultants, including company secretarial and IP work
  • Help getting recognised under Startup India
  • Introductions to angel investors and venture funds, and monthly investor pitch days

Who can apply

  • Anyone with an innovative idea or an early-stage prototype
  • You must be able to commit full time
  • You must be willing to be based at the STEP campus
  • Students, alumni and external entrepreneurs are all named as eligible — a JSS connection is not required

How it runs: months one to three on problem-solution fit, market research, customer discovery and the business model; months four to six building an MVP with lab access, technical mentors and design thinking workshops; months seven to nine on pilot testing, feedback loops, product iteration and first customers; months ten to twelve on go-to-market, pitch refinement, investor readiness and a demo day.

How to apply: use the form on the incubator's site, picking your stage, or write to step@jssateb.ac.in. No deadline is published.

  • Revenue, or strong user growth numbers

Best for: Founders at any stage who want mentoring without a campus residency

  • Idea – Growth
  • 3 months
What you get, who can apply and how to apply

The light-touch option, and the one to start with if you are not sure which programme fits. Three months, built around fortnightly one-to-one sessions rather than a residency.

  • Workshops
  • A peer group going through the same thing

Who can apply

Labs & facilities

Equipment and space on campus.

The 20,000 is square feet and the 22 is acres — neither is a count of startups or people. The labs, library, workshop units and auditorium belong to JSS Academy of Technical Education, the host college, and are reached through it.

STEP incubation space

The incubator lists 20,000 square feet inside the 22-acre college campus, centrally air-conditioned, open around the clock, with flexible seating, full power backup, CCTV and access control, parking and a cafeteria.

Co-working studio

Open-plan desks and design studios. Shared office space is described on the older pages as offered case by case at subsidised rentals.

Innovation lab

Prototyping lab used by the Incubation Program during its MVP phase.

Gigabit connectivity

A gigabit line and office supplies are listed among the amenities.

Host college labs, workshop units and machinery

Access via JSS Academy of Technical Education, Bengaluru

Access to the academy's labs, library, workshop units and machinery, plus the campus auditorium. These belong to the college, not to the incubator. Two specialist centres sit on the same campus: the JSS Electric Vehicle Centre of Excellence and the JSS Advanced Jewellery Design Technology Centre.

Support services

Help offered alongside funding and space.

Legal & finance

In-house consultants for accounting, tax and company secretarial work, plus help with Startup India recognition.

IP & patents

IP services are listed alongside the legal and company secretarial support.

Business advisory

Mentoring by an entrepreneur-in-residence, plus the mentor network the programmes run on.

Market access

Introductions to angel investors, venture funds and financial institutions, monthly investor pitch days, and help hiring student interns from the campus.

Recognitions & empanelments

Official approvals this incubator holds.

Both recognitions were checked against the government's own published lists rather than taken from the incubator's page. The DST listing is on the plain Technology Business Incubator register, not the NIDHI-TBI one, and neither register publishes an approval date or a funding period — so whether either is currently funded cannot be told from them. The incubator's own about text additionally claims recognition by Startup India; that half was not verified.

Technology Business Incubator, Department of Science & Technology (NSTEDB)

Listed in DST's published "List of TBIs and NIDHI TBIs" at nidhi.dst.gov.in as the registered entity "JSSATE-Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park Bangalore", with "JSS Academy of Technical Education Bangalore" as host institute, in Karnataka, thrust area sector agnostic — checked 25 September 2026. It is on the plain TBI register, not NIDHI-TBI, and it does not appear in DST's inclusive-TBI, seed-support, accelerator or centre-of-excellence lists. The register carries no approval date, period or status column, so whether the recognition is currently funded cannot be told from it. The Noida and Mysuru JSS parks are separate rows in the same list.

Host Institute, MSME Innovative Scheme (Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)

Listed at entry 503 of the Ministry's published List of Host Institutes for the incubation component of the MSME Innovative Scheme, as "JSS ACADEMY OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION, BENGALURU" (Bengaluru Urban, Karnataka), checked 24 September 2026. This is the status that lets an innovator name the institute as their host institute when applying on the ministry's own portal. The list gives no approval date, period or status, so whether the recognition is current cannot be told from it. Unlike most rows on that list, this one has been used: the incubator reports two ideas sanctioned under MSME Hackathon 5.0.

How to apply to JSSATEB-STEP (Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park), Bengaluru

Choosing the right programme

Pick by how far along you are, because the three programmes are sorted that way. If you have an idea or an early prototype and can work on it full time, that is the twelve-month Incubation Program. If you already have a product with paying users or strong growth, it is the six-month Acceleration Program. If you are unsure, or you want guidance without moving onto campus, start with the three-month Mentorship Program — it takes founders at any stage, and its own page says it can lead into incubation or acceleration afterwards.

How applications work

There is one form on the incubator's site for all three, and it asks you to select your stage. There is no published deadline and no stated cohort calendar, so treat it as a rolling intake. If the form does not fit what you want to ask, write to the STEP inbox at step@jssateb.ac.in instead. The college's own STEP page links to an older incubator website — go to the current site rather than the one the college links.

What the eligibility lists actually ask for

Read the four bullets on the programme page you are applying to, because they are the whole published bar.

  • Incubation asks for an innovative idea or early-stage prototype, full-time commitment, and willingness to be based at the STEP campus. The residency requirement is the real constraint — plan for it before you apply.
  • Acceleration asks for an existing product with early traction, demonstrated product-market fit, a scalable business model, and revenue or strong user growth. Bring the numbers.
  • Mentorship asks only that you turn up for fortnightly sessions and engage with the peer group.

Nothing published asks you to be incorporated, and nothing restricts applicants by state or category.

You do not need a JSS connection

This is worth saying plainly because most campus incubators are the other way round. Both the incubator's about text and the Incubation Program's eligibility list name external entrepreneurs alongside students, faculty, staff and alumni. Being a JSSATEB student is not an advantage you need.

What to check before you commit

  • Seed funding is described as subject to availability, and routed through a JSS fund and government schemes rather than committed by the incubator. Ask what is actually open for your stage before you count on it.
  • The Acceleration Program's benefit list names a national seed scheme. Ask directly whether the incubator can put your company forward for it, and on what terms.
  • Space is offered case by case at subsidised rentals on the older pages. Ask what a desk or cabin costs you, and whether any equity is involved — neither programme page states an equity policy.
  • The startup counts on the site differ between pages. If the size of the portfolio matters to your decision, ask for the current number and for a founder or two you can speak to.

About JSSATEB-STEP (Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park), Bengaluru

JSSATEB-STEP is the Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park on the campus of JSS Academy of Technical Education in Srinivasapura, south Bengaluru. It is a separate body from the college that hosts it: a society, registered with the Registrar of Co-operative Societies in January 2003, running an incubator that the college's own pages date to 1999. It appears in the Department of Science & Technology's published list of Technology Business Incubators as JSSATE-Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Park Bangalore, with JSS Academy of Technical Education Bangalore named as its host institute and its thrust area recorded as sector agnostic. The academy is also on the Ministry of MSME's list of host institutes for the incubation part of the MSME Innovative Scheme.

How programmes work

There are three programmes, and they are separated by how far along you are. The Incubation Program runs twelve months and is the main route for an early-stage team: months one to three on problem-solution fit, market research, customer discovery and the business model; months four to six building an MVP with the labs, technical mentors and design thinking workshops; months seven to nine on pilot testing, user feedback and early customers; months ten to twelve on go-to-market, pitch refinement, investor readiness and a demo day. The Acceleration Program runs six months and is for companies that already have a product with traction — growth diagnostics and unit economics first, then go-to-market and hiring, then a fundraising and expansion push ending in a demo day with investors. The Mentorship Program runs three months, takes founders at any stage, and is built around fortnightly one-to-one sessions with industry experts and academic mentors rather than a residency; it ends with a progress presentation and, if you are ready, a move into incubation or acceleration.

Alongside the cohorts, the older STEP pages describe short entrepreneurship courses the park has run for years: awareness camps, a three-week entrepreneurship development programme, a two-week faculty development programme, business planning, and a part-time growth strategies course for existing businesses. Several of these were funded by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India under the Department of Science & Technology's NIMAT scheme, and some were sponsored by the Karnataka Department of Industries & Commerce. No current dates are published for them.

Who can apply

You do not need a JSS connection. The incubator's own about text says it supports students, faculty, staff and alumni of JSSATEB and external entrepreneurs, and the Incubation Program's eligibility list ends with the line that it is open to students, alumni and external entrepreneurs. The Mentorship Program says the same thing in its own words — open to all stages from idea to growth, and to students, faculty or external entrepreneurs.

What the Incubation Program does ask for is an innovative idea or an early-stage prototype, a commitment to work on it full time, and a willingness to be based at the STEP campus. The Acceleration Program asks for an existing product with early traction, demonstrated product-market fit, a scalable business model and either revenue or strong user growth. Nothing on the programme pages requires you to be incorporated, and nothing restricts applicants by state or category.

Facilities

The incubator lists 20,000 square feet of space inside the 22-acre college campus, centrally air-conditioned and open around the clock, with flexible seating, plug-and-play desks, design studios, a prototyping lab, meeting and conference rooms, a gigabit line, full power backup, CCTV and access control, parking, a cafeteria, and use of the campus auditorium. The older pages add that shared office space is offered case by case at subsidised rentals. Incubated teams also get access to the host college's labs, library, workshop units and machinery — those belong to the academy, not to STEP. Two specialist centres on the same campus are listed alongside them: the JSS Electric Vehicle Centre of Excellence and the JSS Advanced Jewellery Design Technology Centre.

What the incubator does for startups

The published support list covers help getting recognised under Startup India, in-house consultants for accounting, tax, company secretarial, legal and IP work, mentoring by an entrepreneur-in-residence, introductions to angel investors, venture funds and financial institutions, monthly investor pitch days, and help hiring student interns from the campus. Seed funding is described as routed through a JSS startup fund and government seed support, and the page is explicit that this is subject to availability rather than a committed offer. The incubator has an agreement with the Wadhwani Foundation to run entrepreneurship development teaching at JSSATE Bengaluru, in place since the 2019-20 academic year.

Scale

The incubator says it has incubated more than 150 startups and groomed more than 500 entrepreneurs. Both are its own undated figures, and its pages do not agree with each other: an older page instead refers to 200 ventures, while the homepage's own counters render as zeros. Its startups page names 28 companies, across electronics and semiconductors, diagnostics and health, agritech, climate and waste, edtech, industrial IoT and consumer brands. It also reports that two ideas taken forward through STEP were sanctioned under MSME Hackathon 5.0.

Where it is, and how to apply

The office is on the JSSATE-B campus on Dr. Vishnuvardhan Road at Srinivasapura Post, Bengaluru 560060, off the Uttarahalli-Kengeri road. Applications are taken on the incubator's own site through a short form that asks you to pick your stage, and the enquiry inbox is the STEP address at the college domain. One thing to watch: the college's own STEP page still sends visitors to an older incubator site, which is out of date and carries leftovers from a sibling JSS campus. Use the current site.

JSS runs incubators at more than one campus, and they are separate organisations with separate intakes. JSS ATE STEP in Noida and SJCE-STEP in Mysuru each have their own listing in the same government register. If you want the Bengaluru one, this is it.
