About Kerala Gramin Bank

Kerala Gramin Bank is the regional rural bank for Kerala, headquartered in Malappuram and sponsored by Canara Bank. It was formed on 8 July 2013 by amalgamating North Malabar Gramin Bank and South Malabar Gramin Bank. Ownership follows the standard RRB structure: the Government of India holds 50 percent, the Government of Kerala 15 percent, and Canara Bank as sponsor the remaining 35 percent.

For a Kerala founder outside Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, this is often the most physically accessible Member Institution on the panel, since RRB networks reach semi-urban and rural districts that commercial banks serve thinly. It also sits alongside Kerala Financial Corporation as one of two state-focused institutions on the panel, which gives Kerala startups more local CGSS routes than founders in most other states have. Expect a credit culture oriented to agriculture and small rural enterprise, and size your request to match.

Its role in the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups. Kerala Gramin Bank is one of 40 institutions registered with the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company as a CGSS Member Institution (NCGTC MLI ID 27, classified as a regional rural bank). Member Institutions are the lenders that actually extend credit under the scheme: you borrow from Kerala Gramin Bank, and NCGTC guarantees it against your default. That guarantee is what allows credit to be extended to a DPIIT-recognised startup without collateral, with cover of up to Rs 20 crore per borrower, being 85 percent of the amount in default on loans up to Rs 10 crore and 75 percent above that.

The terms are the lender's, not the scheme's. CGSS fixes the guarantee, not the loan. The interest rate, tenure, moratorium, repayment schedule and how the Annual Guarantee Fee is passed on to you are all set by Kerala Gramin Bank under its own credit policy, and they differ materially between Member Institutions for an identical borrower. Registration does not oblige Kerala Gramin Bank to lend: it appraises you on its normal credit standards first and applies the guarantee second. Approaching more than one Member Institution is almost always worth the effort.
