Track record
What Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator (SP-TBI) reports about its portfolio.
These are counts of the profiles SP-TBI publishes, not audited totals. Its home page separately says startups can connect with over 500 other startups, which describes network reach rather than its own portfolio, and the mission line about 500 new ventures and 10,000 jobs is a goal rather than a result.
All figures computed from our data — sptbi.com, as of Sept 2026.
Programmes they run
Standing programmes at Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator (SP-TBI), separate from the funding calls above.
Two of these are ways into the incubator and three are government schemes SP-TBI delivers. Only Incubation, the Student Startup Programme and the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme have a live apply route on the site; for the two NIDHI schemes you have to ask the centre whether a call is open.
Incubation
IncubationThe general way into SP-TBI for a registered technology startup, with office space, mentors and prototyping support.
Best for: Registered science and technology startups under ten years old, from inside or outside the college
- Idea, Prototype, Early revenue, Growth
- In person
What you get, who can apply and how to applyHide details

Recognitions & empanelments
Official approvals this incubator holds.
Recorded from SP-TBI's own pages and cross-checked against DST's published list of Technology Business Incubators. No funding period is published in either place.
Technology Business Incubator supported by DST, Government of India
SP-TBI's own pages say it is supported by and affiliated with the Department of Science and Technology. DST's published list of Technology Business Incubators also carries it, naming the incubator as Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator and Sardar Patel Institute of Technology as its host. That list is dated January 2023 and no sanction period is published anywhere, so whether the support is current cannot be told.
Delivers DST NIDHI programmes
Runs NIDHI PRAYAS and the NIDHI Seed Support Program, both DST NIDHI schemes, and publishes the innovators and startups supported under each. No sanction period is stated.
How to apply to Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator (SP-TBI)
Choosing the right route
Start with Incubation if you have a registered company in a science or technology field and want space, mentors and help getting to the government schemes. Use the Student Startup Programme instead if one of your co-founders is a student at Bhavan's campus or a partner college, since that route is described as discounted incubation.
The three funding schemes are not separate front doors in the same way. NIDHI PRAYAS is for building a physical prototype and explicitly excludes pure software, e-commerce, app-only and service ideas. The NIDHI Seed Support Program asks for at least three months already spent with the incubator, so it follows incubation rather than replacing it. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme is applied for on the national seed fund portal, where you pick SP-TBI as your incubator.
How applications work
Incubation and the Student Startup Programme each have an apply button on their programme page that opens a form. Neither page publishes an intake window or a deadline. The NIDHI PRAYAS and Seed Support pages have no apply button at all, so if one of those is what you want, write to the centre's inbox at managertbi@spit.ac.in and ask whether a call is open before you build a proposal around it.
How selection works
For both incubation routes there are three stages. Your written application is screened first. Then you are interviewed, by phone or in person, on what your team is capable of and how relevant your experience is. A steering committee makes the final call.
What to have ready
Have your incorporation date and certificate handy, since every route has an age limit and they are not the same: ten years for Incubation, seven for the Student Startup Programme, seven for NIDHI PRAYAS, and two years plus DPIIT recognition for the Startup India scheme. For the two national schemes, check the shareholding rule early, as both ask that Indian promoters hold at least fifty-one per cent. For NIDHI PRAYAS, be able to show that the prototype can be finished within eighteen months, that you or your team own or may use the IP, and that there is a route to commercialisation. The page says preference may be given to innovators who have bootstrapped or have co-investment commitments, and to women and young innovators.
Worth knowing
The Student Startup Programme's page asks for a valid proof that a co-founder is a student, so carry it. If you are applying from outside the college, nothing on the incubation page restricts it to students or alumni.
About Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator (SP-TBI)
Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator, which calls itself SP-TBI, is an incubator for technology startups in Andheri West, Mumbai. It was founded in 2015 as an initiative of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT), and its pages say it is supported by and affiliated with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. It runs its own site at sptbi.com; spit.ac.in is the host college's site, and the college's menu links out to the incubator as a separate body.
SP-TBI appears in DST's published list of Technology Business Incubators, which names the incubator as Sardar Patel Technology Business Incubator and the host institute as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology. That list was published in January 2023 and neither it nor SP-TBI's own pages say when the DST support started or when it ends, so the funding period cannot be told from what is published.
How the programmes work
There are five programmes, and they split into two kinds. Two are ways in: Incubation, the general intake for outside startups, and the Student Startup Programme, a cheaper version for teams with a student co-founder. Three are government funding schemes SP-TBI is a delivery partner for: NIDHI PRAYAS and the NIDHI Seed Support Program, both from DST, and the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme.
Incubation and the Student Startup Programme use the same three-stage selection. First the information in your application form is read. Then you meet the team, by phone or in person, and are judged on what your team can do and how relevant your experience is. Last, a steering committee decides. Neither programme publishes an intake window or a deadline, so applications appear to be read as they arrive.
The funding schemes work differently. NIDHI PRAYAS is a prototyping grant for a physical product, and the page rules out pure software, e-commerce, service and app-only ideas. The prototype has to be finishable within eighteen months. Its page lists three years of supported innovators by name. The NIDHI Seed Support Program is for startups that have already been with the incubator for at least three months and need money for product trials, market entry and commercialisation; its page lists seven startups. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme is for DPIIT-recognised startups incorporated within the last two years, and its page lists seventeen. Its apply button goes to the national seed fund portal rather than to SP-TBI, which is how that scheme works everywhere.
Who can apply
Incubation is open to outside founders, not only to the college's students. What it asks for is a registered startup in the science and technology sector, less than ten years old, at ideation, prototype, traction or scaling stage. The Student Startup Programme needs one co-founder to be a student with proof, and its own page puts the age limit at seven years rather than ten, so the two pages disagree on that point.
The two DST schemes and the Startup India scheme carry the national eligibility rules rather than SP-TBI's own. NIDHI PRAYAS takes individual innovators as well as early-stage startups, and the applicant must be an Indian citizen aged at least eighteen with proof of nationality. The Seed Support Program wants an Indian-registered company, preferably DPIIT-recognised, with Indian promoters holding at least fifty-one per cent and three months already spent with the incubator. The Startup India scheme wants DPIIT recognition, incorporation within two years, and the same fifty-one per cent promoter holding, and a startup can receive its seed support only once.
Facilities
The centre's prototyping workshop is called Prayas Shala, and it is the part of the site with the most detail. Its equipment catalogue lists metalworking tools including a mitre saw, a bench drill, a mini lathe with milling and drilling, a magnetic core drill, MIG and arc welding and a laser cutter and engraver with a 600 by 900 millimetre bed, alongside electronics benches with a digital IC tester, a fifty megahertz storage oscilloscope and a function generator, and a desktop PCB prototyper and CNC mill for circuit boards. Incubatees also get a plug-and-play office, co-working space, meeting rooms, a cafeteria and a recreation area, and there is a production and content creation room for making product videos.
Startups accepted into NIDHI PRAYAS are told they get access to further labs on campus for IoT, AR and VR, digital work, robotics, electronics and mechanics, plus libraries. The pages do not say which of these belong to the incubator and which to the host college.
Beyond space, SP-TBI lists mentors reachable twice a month, investor sessions it calls NetWorthIn and Investor Ready Sessions along with demo days, partner credits for its startups, and interns from SPIT, SPCE, SPJIMR and Bhavan's who can join a startup for up to six months.
Scale
SP-TBI's own directories list fifty-eight current incubatees and seventy past ones, and its mentors page carries thirty-eight mentor profiles grouped under sales, faculty, accounts and taxation, finance, marketing and entrepreneurship. Those are counts of what the site publishes, not audited totals, and one current entry duplicates another's description and founders. Its home page separately says startups can connect with over five hundred other startups, which reads as the reach of its network rather than its own portfolio, and its mission line about five hundred new ventures and ten thousand jobs is a goal, not a result.
Named startups on its pages include Ambronics, Smowcode, Blue Phoenix Technologies, Meine Electric and Lambert in its news feed, and Zoss Water, SixLadders, Avileen Academic Services, Filafox, Space Philic and PYKIH Data Intelligence in its incubatee directories.
Who runs it
The chairperson is Prof. Bhalachandra Chaudhari and the director is Dr. Kiran Talele, who the mentors page says is one of SP-TBI's founding members. Day to day the centre is run by Nitish Metha as chief operating officer, Abhishek Gupta as community manager and Sheetal Kalbande as admin and accounts manager, with student interns from SPIT and Bhavan's supporting community work.
Where it is and how to reach it
SP-TBI sits on the SPIT campus at Munshi Nagar, Andheri West, Mumbai 400 058. The site gives one phone number and one email inbox for the centre and no separate address of its own. There is no careers page and no events page; events and startup news appear as a feed on the home page.
