Pick the right route in

TREC-STEP has one door and two funding schemes behind it.

• Space, machines and hands-on support in Trichy: apply for incubation. This is the main route, and it assumes you will set up on the campus.
• You are an individual innovator with an idea, not a company yet: the DSIR TePP innovation fund was built for exactly that, but its page says the programme is being renewed by DSIR, so ask whether it is running before you plan around it.
• You are already incubated on the premises and need seed money: the seed incubation fund is only open to ventures promoted at TREC-STEP, and it can be structured as equity or as a loan.
• You are a climate venture: BEACON India is the programme to ask about, but it had not launched and had no application route when we last checked.

How applications work

There is no online portal and no deadline. You download a Word form from the About Us page, fill it in and send it to the Executive Director's office in Tiruchirappalli. Because there is no submission tracker, call the Trichy office to confirm it arrived and to ask what happens next — the site publishes no review timeline.

The form is short but it is written for one specific answer, so prepare it before you start:

• It asks whether you plan to start your venture at TREC-STEP, Trichy. A no here removes the reason they would take you.
• It asks you to rank four supports — venture planning, technology assistance, financial support, physical facilities such as sheds and equipment — as very much required, required or not required. Rank honestly; this is how they work out which package you belong in.
• It asks for five years of sales, expense and profit estimates. Bring your own numbers rather than inventing them at the form.
• It asks what resources you need from TREC-STEP, itemised.

What reviewers look for

Three of the form's questions are essay questions and they are the substance of the application: why you are the most suitable person to make the project succeed, why the project may fail, and why it will succeed. The middle one is not a trap — answering it thinly is the fastest way to look unprepared. Name the real technical or market risk and say what you would do about it.

The rest of the emphasis is on the innovation itself. The form asks separately for a description of the project, the critical assumptions behind it, and what is innovative about it. Under TePP, TREC-STEP says it has the technology vetted by outside experts drawn from NIT Tiruchirappalli, regional research institutions and centres of excellence, so expect a technical reviewer rather than only a business one, and write the technology section for someone who will check it.

Practical notes

• TREC-STEP's strength is physical: a common production workshop, nursery sheds sized for large machinery, and an industrial estate of fabrication units next door. If you are building hardware, a machine or a process, that is the reason to be there. A software team that does not need the space and the town gets less out of it.
• The site is old and parts of it are stale — several navigation links are dead and the most recent tender and news items are years apart. Treat the phone number on the contact page as the reliable channel, and confirm anything dated before you act on it.
• The only address published on the site belongs to a named individual rather than an office inbox, so use the Trichy phone numbers rather than email if you want a reply.

TREC-STEP is a technology business incubator in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Its full name is the Tiruchirappalli Regional Engineering College – Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park, and it is an independent society under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975, promoted in 1986 by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, the Government of Tamil Nadu, IDBI, IFCI, ICICI and the erstwhile Regional Engineering College Trichy — now NIT Tiruchirappalli. It describes itself as one of the first Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Parks in the country. Its 50-acre campus is on the national highway between NIT Tiruchirappalli and the public-sector engineering company BHEL, next to an industrial estate that TREC-STEP says houses over 450 fabrication industries.

What they support

TREC-STEP backs knowledge-based and innovative technology ventures. Its own incubatee list leans towards clean tech, engineering and precision manufacturing — coolant recovery systems, neem-based bio-pesticides, CNC tooling, tungsten carbide recovery, water and gas purification, solar energy — with a few information technology, bio-tech and medical-device companies.

Who may apply is stated loosely. The application form is filled in by an individual and asks one gating question: whether you plan to start the venture at TREC-STEP, Trichy. Nothing on the site requires an incorporated company, and nothing restricts intake to NIT Tiruchirappalli students or staff; TREC-STEP is a neighbour of the institute, not a part of it, and outside founders can apply. The one hard condition is on the funding page: to draw on the seed incubation fund the venture must be promoted on TREC-STEP premises. It is a residency-first incubator.

Programmes

The incubation offer is packaged into five named supports: a Strategic Support Package covering markets, technology and the venture plan; an Infrastructure Package bundling nursery incubation space, electricity and water connections, access to the common production facility, internet and office support; a Funding Package that helps put start-up funding together and works on due diligence; an IPR Strategy Facilitation Package opening a national network of intellectual-property attorneys briefed on what start-ups need; and an Internationalization and ICT support package supplying global connectivity and links into the international incubator networks TREC-STEP built through its World Bank and European Union projects.

Two funding schemes sit behind the packages. The DSIR Technopreneur Promotion Programme, known as TePP, is an innovation fund for individual Indian innovators taking an idea to a working prototype; TREC-STEP was the first TePP outreach centre in the country, and it identifies innovators, has the technology vetted by outside experts, then mentors and funds the build. Its page is written in the past tense and says the programme is being renewed by DSIR, so it is not open. The second is a seed incubation fund from the Technology Development Board and the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, given as equity or as a loan depending on the venture, and covering what banks and venture investors will not fund — technology and product development, training, marketing, consultancy, software and margin money for loans.

The newest item on the site is BEACON India, a climate innovation incubation programme approved by the Green Climate Fund board on 29 October 2025, with TATA Capital as partner and SIDBI as the accredited entity to the fund. TREC-STEP says it will launch the following year, but there is no BEACON India page, eligibility note or application route on the site, so a climate founder cannot yet apply.

TREC-STEP has also run one-off competitions: the BIG Idea Challenge, with Young Indians of the Confederation of Indian Industry, closed at the end of December 2017.

Facilities and support

The centre is built around a Common Production Facility — a shared workshop with production machinery, tooling, skilled operators and design software. Incubatees sit either in nursery sheds, designed for daylight and ventilation and sized to take large machinery, or in smaller ready-to-use cubicles in the New Incubator Building, which TREC-STEP describes as suited to information technology, bio-tech and nano-tech teams.

Beyond space there is an earth station set up with Software Technology Parks of India for international gateway connectivity, a Wi-Fi network with software and experts on hand, a training facility with laboratories and classrooms, a library of over 2,300 specialised books, and conferencing and canteen facilities. TREC-STEP also runs a City IT Learning Centre in the middle of Tiruchirappalli. Technical help comes through what it calls its Technology Angel Network — faculty from NIT Tiruchirappalli, regional research institutions and centres of excellence including coal research centres and Bharathidasan University, brought in according to what an innovator needs.

Track record

The figures TREC-STEP publishes are its own and undated. Its incubatee page says it presently incubates 19 companies across different incubation phases. On the funding page it says nearly 40 innovators have been identified and developed under TePP and that most became working technology start-ups, and separately that 13 TePP grantees scaled up into companies — the two counts are not reconciled. It also reports 13 national and two international awards won by its TePP innovators, and its incubatees have won recognition from the Indian STEP and Business Incubators Association between 2008 and 2010 and in the DST–Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme. TREC-STEP itself has run development projects with UNDP, UNIDO, the European Commission, the World Bank and the British Council Division.

Who runs it

R. M. P. Jawahar is the Executive Director and the only office-holder named on the site; he was felicitated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on behalf of the incubators' association in January 2022, by the India Smart Grid Forum as Smart Incubator of the Year 2022, and by the Ministry of Science and Technology in August 2022. TREC-STEP is registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 2010 and publishes its annual foreign-contribution returns on a compliance page, and it is recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Careers

The careers page lists two roles, both in Chennai: a Manager for Start-up Promotion and an Incubation Centre Coordinator. There is no events page.

How to apply

There is no online portal. The route in is a Word application form linked from the About Us page. It asks for personal and qualification details, whether you intend to start your venture at TREC-STEP in Trichy, which supports you need, a project description with its critical assumptions and what is innovative about it, five years of sales, expense and profit estimates, and three written answers: why you are the right person, why the project may fail, and why it will succeed. Completed forms go to the Executive Director's office in Tiruchirappalli. No selection steps, review timeline or intake window are published.

The site itself is old and unevenly maintained: every page carries a 2014 copyright, the news page stops in 2013, and four navigation links lead to missing pages. The homepage carries the October 2025 Green Climate Fund news, so the organisation is active even where its pages are not — confirm current intake by phone before relying on anything dated here.
