How to apply to XCITE (XLRI Council for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship)
Check the gate first
- Your venture must operate, or plan to operate, in one of the 12 states: Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland or Tripura.
- It must be at idea stage, pre-revenue or early-revenue. Ventures above the revenue ceiling or with Series A funding are not eligible.
- Purely urban ventures with no rural link are generally outside scope.
Where the programme stands
- Applications for the first cohort are closed.
- To be considered for a later cohort, use the register-interest link on the XCITE page. No next date is published.
How applications work
- A structured application covering your idea, your background, your market and your community relevance.
- Keep ID proof, address proof, any registration or GST papers, and a short business plan ready.
- You need two professional references with signed recommendations. They can be community leaders, government field officers, or self-help group and producer organisation representatives. Family and personal friends are not accepted.
- Pre-screening, then a 30 to 45 minute interview. A score of at least 50 out of 100 is needed. Expect 4 to 6 weeks from close to the result.
What reviewers look for
- Impact potential: rural relevance, scale and livelihoods created.
- Founder strength and fit with the problem.
- Need validation and local context. XCITE says it weights substance over polish, so you do not need a polished pitch deck.
- A workable revenue model and early traction.
- Integrity and references.
Before you commit
- Disclose any other incubator or grant you have. Parallel incubation needs a no-objection letter, and hiding it is grounds for exit.
- Plan to attend at least 70% of sessions and travel to Jamshedpur for the two bootcamps.
- Register a legal entity before any grant tranche is released. Grants go only to the entity's bank account and need quarterly utilisation reports.
About XCITE (XLRI Council for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship)
XCITE, the XLRI Council for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship, is a Rural Business Incubation Centre established at XLRI Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. It runs as a not-for-profit Section 8 company with grant support from NABARD under its Gramya Vikas Nidhi Fund. It describes itself as one of the first incubators of its kind to be hosted inside a business school.
XCITE's applications for its first cohort have closed. The page invites founders to register their interest in future cohorts, and gives no date yet for the next intake.
Who XCITE is for
XCITE backs rural, agri-based and grassroots enterprises in 12 states: Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Eligibility depends on where the venture operates or plans to operate, not on the founder's home state. XCITE says it goes beyond conventional startups and lists individual founders, farmer producer organisations, self-help groups, cooperatives and student campus ventures as eligible applicants.
At least 30% of every cohort is reserved for ventures led by women or tribal entrepreneurs. XCITE says it also welcomes first-generation entrepreneurs. Purely urban-market ventures with no rural link are generally outside its scope.
How the programme works
The incubation programme runs for 6 months. It opens with a bootcamp at XLRI Jamshedpur and closes with a graduation bootcamp and demo day at the same campus. In between, selected ventures get mentor-led sessions, group expert sessions, field immersion, exposure visits and formal reviews at the second and fourth month. The format is hybrid, so founders keep running their ventures in their home districts and travel to XLRI, or a regional hub, only for bootcamps and reviews. Training and mentoring run in a mix of Hindi, English and, where the mentors allow, regional languages.
Each venture gets at least one structured one-on-one mentoring session a month. XCITE also offers incubation space and on-campus learning, a common services pool for IT, marketing, e-commerce, legal and compliance help, and links to self-help groups, producer organisations, NABARD field offices, state livelihood missions and CSR partners.
XCITE does not take equity. Selected ventures can receive grant support during incubation, released in up to three milestone-linked tranches. The grant is not decided at selection. It is assessed later, either at an early investment window after the opening bootcamp or at the graduation window on demo day. Follow-on funding from banks, NABARD-linked schemes, NBFC-MFIs, angels or impact investors is a separate arrangement between the venture and that funder. Founders keep full ownership of their intellectual property.
Eligibility and selection
Ventures must be at idea stage, pre-revenue or early-revenue. Ventures above the revenue ceiling in XCITE's incubation policy, or that have raised Series A or equivalent funding, are not eligible. There is no minimum degree, applicants must be 18 or older, and solo founders can apply. You do not need a registered business to apply, but grant money goes only to a registered entity's bank account, so a private company, LLP, partnership, farmer producer company or cooperative is needed before any grant tranche.
Applicants submit a structured application and usually two professional references. A pre-screening committee checks geography, stage, community value, founder intent and completeness. Shortlisted founders are interviewed for 30 to 45 minutes by the RBIC Incubation Committee and scored out of 100. A score of at least 50 is needed for selection. The whole process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks from application close. Application materials are available in Hindi and English.
Focus sectors
XCITE lists 25 focus sectors. They include organic foods, seeds, precision and vertical farming, dairy, fisheries, farm mechanisation, mushroom cultivation, food processing, forest products, medicinal and aromatic plants, handloom and handicrafts, rural tourism, rural health and education, financial inclusion, clean energy, waste management and rural-applied technology. It gives particular weight to GI-tagged and heritage industries, rural supply chains, women and tribal enterprise, and last-mile market solutions.
Who runs it
XCITE's board is chaired by the director of XLRI Jamshedpur and includes Vineet Rai of Aavishkaar Group, Chandra Shekhar Ghosh of Bandhan Bank, the CEO of the Mizoram Startup Mission and senior NABARD officials. Ravish Vasan is the CEO. XCITE also invites sector experts to register as mentors.
