The Greenovation Green Steel Challenge is a national innovation challenge designed to identify, support, and pilot high-impact solutions that enable the decarbonisation of the steel sector in India. The program focuses on sourcing innovations and proof-of-concepts that can be tested in real industrial environments, enabling innovators to move from pilot to scale with reduced risk.
Aligned with India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change and long-term decarbonisation goals, the challenge addresses the urgent need to reduce emissions from steel production, which currently contributes a significant share of global CO₂ emissions. Participants gain access to live industrial testbeds across Eastern India, helping validate solutions under real-world operating conditions.
Beyond funding, the challenge offers structured mentorship, capacity building, and ecosystem access to help innovators refine, deploy, and scale their solutions. The initiative also supports India’s early adoption of green steel standards, enhancing global competitiveness and ESG readiness.

What are the focus areas of the challenge?
The challenge covers energy efficiency with process optimisation, renewable energy integration, scrap value chain improvements, financial mechanisms for de-risking early solutions, and other innovations like hydrogen-based steel production and carbon capture.
Who can apply?
Innovators and technology providers developing decarbonisation solutions, R&D institutions and researchers with research-backed solutions. Solutions must be applicable to the Indian steel industry context, at prototype, pilot-tested, or market-ready stages, with a proven track record in clean technology and readiness for industrial implementation.
What is the prize structure?
Winners receive non-dilutive cash prizes: up to ₹12 lakhs in the Innovator Category, up to ₹3 lakhs in the Research & R&D Category, and an additional up to ₹10 lakhs for pilot project implementation.
Is the funding equity-free?
Yes, the cash prizes are non-dilutive, meaning winners do not give up equity or repay the funding.
What support is provided beyond funding?
The challenge offers mentorship from industry leaders, capacity building workshops (energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, technology deployment, market readiness), communications and branding support, fundraising guidance, organisational management coaching, and networking opportunities with government agencies, industry partners, and investors.
