Thiagarajar College of Engineering's Technology Business Incubator, known as TCE TBI, is based in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is registered as a society and has operated since 2014, with funding support from the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. It works with students, alumni and entrepreneurs who want to turn a problem they have spotted into a business.

How programmes work

TCE TBI offers incubation for startups and a pre-incubation programme for student innovators. Its stated services to startups include infrastructure, funding support, investor connections, expert mentorship, co-working space, help with research and development, skill development, IPR facilitation and networking.

The pre-incubation programme gives student innovators mentorship, workshops on topics such as market research, business planning and financial management, networking, use of the college's labs and co-working spaces, and information on funding sources.

The incubator is also a co-incubation partner of the IIT Madras Incubation Cell. The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding in June 2022, and startups in the arrangement get access to resources, mentorship and networking from both.

Who can apply

The incubator says it caters to aspiring students, alumni and entrepreneurs. Its incubation is aimed at innovative startups in its core areas: wireless technologies, manufacturing materials technology, automation, machine learning and data science, environmental technologies, IT-enabled services, and defence technologies. The programme pages do not set out a formal eligibility rule, so the application form is the place to check the exact criteria.

Facilities

The Product Engineering and Build Labs provide CAD/CAM software and 3D printers for design and rapid prototyping, along with equipment for building prototypes. A product testing lab runs stress, durability and performance tests. An EV Lab supports battery, motor and vehicle diagnostics work, and an Advanced Materials Lab supports material synthesis, characterization and testing. Co-working spaces offer flexible seating, high-speed internet and shared facilities, and individual cabins give private space for focused work.

Scale

The college's homepage says the incubator has nurtured 12 startups. Its incubated-startups listing shows 21 current startups and 14 graduated ones. The two figures do not match, so this guide does not give a single count.

Who runs it

The incubator's team page lists a chief executive officer, a TBI faculty coordinator and a TBI manager. Mentors come from the alumni network, and established entrepreneurs associate with the incubator through the AlmaConnect portal, guiding student innovators and startups with practical insights and industry connections.
