About a-IDEA, ICAR-NAARM

a-IDEA (Association for Innovation Development of Entrepreneurship in Agriculture) is a Technology Business Incubator hosted by the ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) in Hyderabad. Established in 2014, a-IDEA is supported by NSTEDB (National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board) under the Department of Science and Technology and BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) under the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The incubator operates from a 14,000 sq.ft. facility on the NAARM campus.

Role in the Startup Ecosystem

a-IDEA is one of India's most focused agri-business incubators, working exclusively with startups across 14 domains of agriculture and allied sectors. It serves as a bridge between agricultural research conducted at ICAR institutions and commercial market applications. The incubator has also partnered with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to provide seed equity support to agri-startups through the SIDBI Seed Fund Program.

Programs

  • Agri UDAAN: The flagship food and agribusiness accelerator, launched in 2015. Agri UDAAN is a four to six month program for startups that are two to three years old, have a working prototype, and demonstrate market traction. The program has run multiple cohorts (through UDAAN 5.0 and beyond), with hundreds of applications per cycle. In early cohorts, 579 startups applied for UDAAN 2.0, with 40 mentored and 10 shortlisted, of which 4 received funding of approximately INR 6.25 crore.
  • KRISHI BOOT: Pre-incubation and capacity building programs for aspiring agri-entrepreneurs.
  • ABI Incubation Program: A structured incubation track supported by BIRAC for biotech and agri-innovation startups.
  • NIDHI PRAYAS Grant: Grant support for prototype development in early-stage agri-tech ventures.
  • SIDBI Seed Fund Program at a-IDEA: Seed equity support for startups incubated at a-IDEA, in collaboration with SIDBI.

Who Benefits

Food technology, agritech, and agri-business startups at ideation through early revenue stages. Entrepreneurs working on farm-to-fork innovations, precision agriculture, food processing, post-harvest technology, livestock management, fisheries, and sustainable agriculture practices. Researchers from ICAR institutions looking to commercialize agricultural innovations will find a natural home here.

Strategic Impact

a-IDEA fills a critical niche in India's startup ecosystem by providing dedicated incubation infrastructure for agricultural innovation. While most Indian incubators focus on software and services, a-IDEA's deep specialization in agriculture, backed by ICAR's research network and government funding, creates a unique support system for a sector that employs over 40% of India's workforce. The SIDBI partnership adds a financial dimension that many agri-incubators lack.
