Choosing the right route

There are three separate doors and they do not share a form. If you want incubation — mentors, network, lab access, help chasing grants and investment — go through the incubation route. If you only want a desk in central Chennai with event invites and introductions, that is the coworking route and it has its own form. If you are a student or a very early team wanting visibility and a shot at incubation, wait for the next Pitch Fest call rather than applying cold.

How applications work

Incubation has no online form. The centre publishes its own pitch deck template as a download; you fill it in with your startup's details and email the completed deck to contact@annaincubator.org. Use their template rather than your own deck — it tells you what they want to see and it is what the team reads. The link labelled "Incubate me" takes you to the download page, not to a submit screen, so nothing is sent until you email it.

Coworking is a short multi-step form on the site. No plan or pricing is published anywhere, so ask about terms when you enquire.

Pitch Fest applications go through a separate form linked from the event page. There is no application or participation fee.

How selection works

The centre publishes a selection process only for Pitch Fest, and it is a reasonable guide to how it thinks. Applications are first screened for the quality of the innovation and fit with the focus areas. Shortlisted teams then go through an intensive bootcamp to sharpen the business model and the pitch. Finalists pitch live to a jury, which assesses incubation readiness and likely impact. Shortlisted applicants are notified by email, and being shortlisted does not by itself get you incubated — selected teams may be invited for a further incubation evaluation.

For incubation itself no process is published. Expect the deck you email to be the first filter, and expect a conversation rather than a published timeline.

What reviewers look for

The stated criteria are innovation depth, technical feasibility, execution readiness, market relevance and clarity of the pitch, plus problem relevance, market potential, scalability, team capability and overall impact. Two things follow from the centre's own focus. First, it says plainly that it is stage and industry agnostic but wants the idea to be tech-enabled — so lead with what is technically hard about what you are building. Second, its portfolio is dominated by hardware and deep tech: electric vehicles, drones, robotics, space, assistive devices, materials, medical imaging. If you are building something physical, say what you need to prototype and which machines you would use, because the equipment lab is the centre's strongest card.

A working prototype is not mandatory for Pitch Fest, and a non-technical founder is explicitly welcome provided you are willing to bring the right people in. Applications may include links to demos, videos, prototypes or code repositories, and using them is a cheap way to prove execution.

Worth knowing before you apply

The centre is stage and industry agnostic on paper and the two tracks it does define are built around students and very early ventures, so first-time and campus founders are its natural intake. It gives no incorporation requirement and no Tamil Nadu residency gate anywhere on its pages.

Once you are in, two practical benefits are easy to miss: the startup credit routes, where the centre confirms your association so you can claim software credits from Zoho and AWS, and its free public equity calculator, which walks through splitting equity between up to four co-founders and is open to anyone.

Events are a good back door. Pitch Fest, Incepta with StartupTN and PitchX with CADFEM APAC all ran in the last two years and all ended in front of investors or a jury. Watch the events page and ask the team when the next call opens.

Anna Incubator is the Atal Incubation Centre hosted by Anna University in Chennai. It is a Section 8 company, and its own pages say it was set up with a grant from Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, Government of India. It sits on the second floor of the Platinum Jubilee building at the AC Tech Campus in Guindy, and it also uses the names AIC - Anna Incubator and, in its registration paperwork, Atal Incubation Centre AnnaUniversity Incubation Foundation.

How incubation works

The incubation offer is described as stage and industry agnostic. The centre says that if you are an entrepreneur with an innovative tech-enabled idea it is interested, and it publishes no further filter than that. What incubatees get is grouped into five headings: access to mentors, access to funds, access to networks, access to resources and access to opportunities. Access to funds means help pursuing government grants, CSR funds, seed funds and investment through the centre's investor network and investor forums, rather than a fund the centre runs itself. Access to networks means its alumni, its community of students across Tamil Nadu, and its investors and founders. Access to resources includes the labs of Anna University, which the centre says house everything from 3D printers to fabrication machines. Its home page adds go-to-market help, an Innovation Hub workspace, and advisory on legal, finance and market research.

Applying is deliberately low-tech. There is no online application form. You download the centre's own pitch deck template from the incubation page, fill it in with your startup's details and email the completed deck to its contact inbox. The button that leads there is labelled "Incubate me" and the page behind it is a download, not a form, so do not wait for a submit screen.

Who can apply

For incubation, the centre states no incorporation requirement, no geography gate and no Anna University affiliation requirement. Outside founders are not excluded anywhere on the site; equally, no student-only route is described. The one place the centre does spell out eligibility in detail is Pitch Fest, its recurring competition, which splits applicants into campus innovators — people graduating or recently graduated with a bachelor's or master's degree, working at proof of concept or prototype — and emerging startups at proof of concept, prototype or MVP stage. A student whose venture already has a validated working prototype and real traction is told to apply as an emerging startup rather than a campus innovator. Cross-institutional teams are allowed, a technical background is not required, and one person may enter more than one distinct idea as separate applications.

Facilities

The centre runs its own equipment lab, and this is the most concrete thing it offers. On the additive side it lists a multi-extruder 3D printer for industrial prototyping, a Creality FDM printer and a Phrozen resin printer. On the subtractive side, a CO2 laser cutter, a CNC mill and a three-axis CNC router that handles wood, acrylic, plastics and soft metals. Alongside these sit a Doosan six-axis robotic arm, a high-resolution 3D scanner, CAD/CAM and AR/VR workstations, robotics and IoT sensors, and a full set of mechanical hand tools. Incubatees additionally get access to Anna University's own labs.

Coworking is sold as a separate thing from incubation, through its own form. It comes with all-day access, wifi, power backup, a workspace in central Chennai, invites to startup events, and investor and mentor connections. The pages describe access as both "all-day" and "24/7" without settling on one, and no plan or price is published, so ask.

Scale

The centre publishes no headline counters at all — no startups-supported figure, no jobs number, no funds-raised total, no founding year. What it does publish is a portfolio listing, which names 77 companies across three pages. Among them are Raptee Energy, Reneonix, Vividobots, REUDE, MEINE Electric Automotives, AtumX, Blinc Smart Homes, fititout solutions, Dextroware Devices, Prediscan Medtech, Next Orbit Space and Space Kidz India. The mix is heavily hardware and deep tech: electric vehicles, drones, robotics, space, assistive devices, materials and medical imaging, with a smaller group of software and consumer ventures. Note that the third page of the listing repeats companies already shown on the first two, so browsing it feels longer than it is.

Events

Pitch Fest is the centre's own competition, run with PALS, an IIT alumni-led initiative. The 2025 edition ran over two days in August 2025 and ended with 25 finalist teams pitching live to a panel that included the head of StartupTN. A 2026 edition was advertised with applications closing in July 2026; that page is still live but the date has passed and the events listing does not mention the edition, so treat it as between intakes and ask before applying. Two other recent events were Incepta 2026, run with StartupTN in February 2026, which paired an innovation-to-commercialisation expo with mentor, intellectual property and vendor clinics, and PitchX 2026 in March 2026, a deep-tech forum run with CADFEM APAC around the Ansys startup programme, ending in a live pitch to venture investors.

Who runs it

Kishore Kumar S is the chief executive, and the centre describes him as having managed incubation operations and ecosystem building across Tamil Nadu with the Government of Tamil Nadu and IIT Madras Incubation Cell before joining. A small operating team covers finance and HR, outreach, mentoring and investments, secretarial and compliance work, and technical support. The board is chaired through Anna University's convenor committee, currently Thiru. Dheeraj Kumar I.A.S., with the university registrar and twelve directors including Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala. Two advisors are named: V. M. Muralidharan and Ramanan Ramanathan, the first mission director of Atal Innovation Mission. Eight mentors are named on the people page.

A note on the university

Anna University runs several separate entrepreneurship bodies and this incubator is only one of them. The university's own site lists the Atal Incubation Centre alongside a distinct Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Entrepreneurship Cell on their own separate site, a Centre for Intellectual Property Rights, a Centre for Sponsored Research and Consultancy, a Technology Enabling Centre and an E-YUVA centre. None of those appear on the incubator's site and the incubator makes no claim over them. If you were pointed at "the Anna University incubator", check which one you mean.
