About this competition
The Diamond Challenge is a free entrepreneurship competition for high school students, run by Horn Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware in the US. Teams from any country build a business or social venture idea and compete for a prize pool of about US$100,000 (about ₹95 lakh). The submission round is open now and closes on 14 January 2027 at 5 PM EST.
Note early: this is a student-only competition. Teams must be 2 to 4 high school students aged 14 to 18 with an adult advisor aged 21 or older. Adult founders and startups cannot enter. Indian high school teams can, and there is a pitch event site in India.
What the program offers
Teams choose one of two tracks. Business Innovation is for a concept whose main purpose is solving a customer problem and earning revenue and profit. Social Innovation is for a concept whose main purpose is solving a social problem and creating positive impact on people or the environment. The choice is final once made.
In each track the top three teams win US$12,000 (about ₹11.4 lakh), US$8,000 (about ₹7.6 lakh) and US$4,500 (about ₹4.3 lakh). There are also topical prizes for waste and recycling innovation, technology that improves lives, solutions that expand economic access, top global teams and mental health, education and well-being. The page does not say how the full pool is divided. Awards go either in full to the team's venture, if it is a registered entity, or are split evenly among registered team members.
Who can apply
Teams of 2 to 4 students aged 14 to 18 at the submission deadline, with one adult advisor aged 21 or older, from any country. Each student may join one team and submit one concept per year. Only concepts created by team members may be entered. The concept must not have earned more than US$100,000 in total revenue before the deadline, and concepts that reached the final summit in earlier years cannot be resubmitted. Everything must be in English.
For India, this suits school teams with an idea, a school business club or a young social entrepreneur. It does not suit university students or adult startups.
How to apply
Round 1 has two parts. First, a written concept narrative of 3 to 5 pages, double-spaced, as an English PDF, covering the problem, customers, your solution, what makes it different, how it earns money or sustains itself, the team and any progress. Second, an introductory video of up to 60 seconds at a publicly viewable link. Submit through the online platform; materials are final once submitted. When you submit you also choose your pitch format for Round 2: a live pitch event or a recorded video. A practical tip: videos that run over the limit or cannot be viewed are disqualified, so test your link while logged out.
How applications are judged and what happens next
Judges score the submissions, and teams that reach a minimum score advance. Advancing teams are notified by 10 February 2027. In Round 2, teams give a 5-minute pitch followed by up to 3 minutes of judges' questions, either live at a partner pitch event (one of the sites is in India) or by pre-recorded video with a deck of about 15 slides or fewer. Finalists are announced on 9 March 2027 and pitch in person at the Limitless World Summit on 29 and 30 April 2027.
About Horn Entrepreneurship
Horn Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware runs the Diamond Challenge as an education initiative and offers free resources for students and educators. The leadership team can change competition rules and is the final authority on them.
Things to check before you apply
- At least one team member must attend the Limitless World Summit in person if you reach the final round. The page does not say whether travel costs are covered.
- If visas are denied or delayed and nobody can attend, a team can ask to defer for one year; if it still cannot attend, it loses its place.
- Your chosen pitch format cannot be changed later, and a team that cannot compete in that format forfeits its place.
- By taking part, you give the university a limited right to use images and references to your concept for promotion.
