Its student hackathon, Solve-a-thon, has no open edition — the only one reachable from its site closed in April 2024.

What you get, who can apply and how to apply

V-NEST incubates startups continuously rather than in dated cohorts, so there is no deadline to wait for. Its own answer on who can apply is that anyone with a viable startup idea or an early-stage startup may do so, and its published list of incubated companies includes external founders alongside student, alumni and faculty teams. Incubation is free of charge.

How selection works: three stages, each reviewed before the next opens. First an abstract of the idea — problem, solution, market, advantage, impact. Then a full plan with market analysis, business model and revenue, three-to-five-year projections, team, sales and marketing, risks and growth. Last, a pitch of fifteen to twenty minutes to a panel of mentors and investors, with questions afterwards. Any stage can be sent back for revision.

How to apply: V-NEST points applicants at a form on its own site, but that form cannot submit today, so send your abstract to vnest@vit.ac.in or director.vnest@vit.ac.in, say which stage you are at, and ask for a pitch slot. Slots run on weekdays between 9am and 6pm and are confirmed within a day.

Neither V-NEST nor VIT Chennai claims any government recognition or accreditation for the centre itself. It names StartupTN, EDII and Startup India as partners without saying what those relationships cover, and the schemes listed on VIT Chennai's grants table are awards won by its startups, not recognitions held by the centre.

Listed at entry 618 of the Ministry's published List of Host Institutes for the incubation component of the MSME Innovative Scheme, as "VIT UNIVERSITY CHENNAI CAMPUS" (KANCHIPURAM, TAMIL NADU), checked 24 September 2026. This is the status that lets an innovator name the institute as their Host Institute when applying on the ministry's own portal. The list gives no approval date, no period and no status column, so whether the recognition is current cannot be told from it; and being listed is a capacity registration, not evidence that the institute has ever hosted an approved idea.
