Choosing the right route

There are two doors. Rolling incubation is the standing one: it takes founders at any time through the Apply page, and it is the route if you want space, labs, mentoring and seed grant support at the SMIT campus. The acceleration programmes are dated calls, mostly aimed at the North East — Digi-SAPNE is the live family, and its second edition closed applications in January 2026 with the cohort running to July 2026. How applications work

Incubation applications go through a form linked from the Apply page. Read the eligibility list on that page before you start — it is specific about entity type, age of company and turnover. If you have not registered a company yet you can still apply, but every promoter has to be named on the application, and you commit to registering within a year of starting incubation. Programme calls such as Digi-SAPNE use their own application form and have their own inbox.

How selection works

The centre says screening takes at least three to four weeks after applications close. Only shortlisted applicants hear back, and they are invited to pitch to a Selection Committee. The committee's decision is final, it is communicated by email to selected applicants only, and the centre does not give feedback on applications it turns down — so plan around not hearing anything rather than waiting for a rejection.

What reviewers look for

The stated screening parameters are the quality of the innovation or technology, the potential for intellectual property and commercialisation, whether the venture can become sustainable and create employment, and the strength and experience of the team. For the acceleration programmes the bar is evidence rather than ambition: at least a prototype, an MVP or a completed pilot, and founders who are committed to the model. Sector is not the gate — the centre states you do not need to be a technology company — but a North East link helps for the SAPNE family of programmes.

Before you apply

Ask about cost and equity. The centre's pages do not say whether incubation is free or charged, or whether it takes equity, so raise both in your first conversation. Also ask which programmes are running now: several programme pages on the site are from past editions and one accelerator page carries a timeline with no year on it.

AIC-SMU Technology Business Incubation Foundation, usually written AIC-SMUTBI, is an Atal Incubation Centre set up in September 2018 under the Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog. It sits inside the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology campus at Rangpo, in Pakyong district, Sikkim, on the banks of the Teesta, and it says it is the first Atal Incubation Centre in North-East India. AIM's own published list of Atal Incubation Centres carries it under Sikkim Manipal University, Pakyong district, with 2018 as the year. Neither that list nor the centre's site says whether the AIM funding period is still running.

How the programmes work

The core offer is an incubation programme of about 20 weeks, built around what the centre calls 12 Critical Success Elements, after which a startup graduates following a gestation period of roughly two years. Incubatees get infrastructure, mentorship and seed grant support, plus branding help, introductions to corporate houses for pilots, access to angel investors and venture funds, and discounts on accounting and legal services through partner firms.

Alongside incubation the centre runs acceleration programmes aimed squarely at the North East. Digi-SAPNE, the Startup Acceleration Program for North East, is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology; its second edition took applications between December 2025 and January 2026 and runs its cohort from February to July 2026, after roadshows across states including Meghalaya and Mizoram. Earlier rounds include SAPNE 1.0, Startup School 2.0 with the Wadhwani Foundation, and the Startup Manipur Acceleration Program. The centre also ran the XR Startup Program, a Meta and MeitY Startup Hub collaboration for extended reality startups, and a 2025 fellowship call on battery energy storage with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi, Innovation Norway and TERI. All of those are closed.

Who can apply

Incubation is open to outside founders, not only to Sikkim Manipal students. Applicants may be an individual or a group of individuals working on an innovative product, process or service with a scalable business model. A registered applicant should be a private limited company, a one person company, a registered partnership firm, an LLP, or another commercial establishment allowed under Indian law; it must be under ten years old, or fifteen years for a biotechnology venture, must stay under the turnover limit set in the Companies Act, and must not have been formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business. A team with no registration yet can still be considered, provided every promoter is named on the application and the company is registered within one year of starting incubation.

The acceleration programmes have asked for at least a prototype, an MVP or a completed pilot, and the centre states plainly that you do not have to be a technology company to join them, though idea-stage founders are told they are unlikely to get much from an accelerator. Individual calls add their own gates: the XR accelerator wanted DPIIT-registered startups or ones willing to register, and the Norwegian fellowship was limited to Indian citizens aged eighteen or over who live or work in one of the eight North Eastern states, or whose idea could be implemented there.

Facilities

The centre runs its own space on the SMIT campus. There is a 30-seat co-working floor called The Habitat, a 15-seat Ideation Hub for team meetings, a TMA Pai board room seating 30 with video conferencing, 150 sq ft business centre offices for startups that want their own room inside the incubator, a 200-seat event hall called the Pavillion, and an 80-person lounge and event area called the Social Circle. On the build side there is a Makerspace with sensors, modules and chips, a fabrication lab for rapid prototyping, an XR lab with AR and VR equipment, and an AI, IoT and robotics lab with quadcopters and robotic arms. Listed lab equipment includes a laser cutter, a vinyl plotter, a 3D printer, soldering kits and an acrylic cutting machine.

Scale

The homepage says the centre supports more than 100 startups and lists around 40 named portfolio companies, among them AATWRI Aerospace and Defence, Akumen Artificial Intelligence, Nibiaa Devices, Farmeasy Technologies, Encamp Adventures and SH1ELD Tech InfoSec Solutions. An older item on the centre's own news page, dated 2021, gives a much smaller picture — 45 startups incubating, 60 supported and 177 jobs created — so the figures on the site do not agree with one another and none of them is dated on the page where it appears. The centre also describes itself as a Front Runner in an assessment framework run by the World Bank, IIT Delhi and AIM NITI Aayog, without giving a year.

Who runs it

Prof. (Dr.) Tej Chingtham is the CEO. The Board of Advisors names Ramanan Ramanathan, the first Mission Director of the Atal Innovation Mission, and Tshewang Topden, a retired Indian Foreign Service officer. A long Board of Mentors page lists several dozen mentors from venture funds, corporates and the North East startup ecosystem. There is no careers page on the site, and the events page has not been updated since late 2024, although the Digi-SAPNE programme site is current.
