About CHAITANYA BHARATHI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) is an engineering and management institute on its Gandipet campus in Hyderabad, Telangana. It was established in 1979 and its incubation work is run from the campus, for students, innovators and members of the public who want to turn a technology idea into a company.
How the incubator works
The business incubator was set up with MSME in 2019. Applicants can be an individual or a group, whether students, members of the public or a mix of the two. Each applicant with a high-impact idea applies in the prescribed format with the required documents. The centre then reviews the idea and the team, and the applicant presents to an evaluation committee of experts, who ask questions before a decision is made.
Incubation is allowed for up to two years. Companies that offer educational courses or training programmes are not eligible. Ideas can also come from ideathons, boot camps and idea fairs, and people with an idea can approach the centre directly.
Programmes
The centre offers resident incubation for companies that take office space on the campus, and virtual incubation for CBIT alumni and other innovators who build their product from elsewhere. Its Atal Community Innovation Centre, selected by the Atal Innovation Mission, supports ideas aimed at community and societal problems, from diverse domains including drone technology.
The institute's Innovation Cell says it has run 50 plus programmes for students and faculty on innovation, incubation, IPR and entrepreneurship.
Who can apply
The incubator is open to students, the general public, or a mix of the two. Virtual incubation is for CBIT alumni and other innovators. The Atal Community Innovation Centre is open to students, researchers, and any individual or group of individuals who want to design solutions for communities.
Facilities and services
Resident incubatees are offered office space on an individual basis, with up to two computers on rental. Support services include experts with IP knowledge, professionals for accounting, legal expertise, and business consulting assistance. Faculty advisors from the institute act as mentors on technology and business development. A seed loan may be provided, subject to available funds and schemes. It is not automatic, and companies can apply for it after six months in the incubator.
Recognition
The institute's MSME scheme recognition as a Host Institute was approved at a meeting in December 2019. The approval letter makes eligibility to submit new ideas for financial support depend on a signed undertaking. The Atal Innovation Mission selected CBIT to set up an Atal Community Innovation Centre on campus. The institute's own pages describe the status of that centre differently, so check its current position before relying on it.
Scale
The institute says its alumni network is more than 30000 people. Start-up counts on its incubation pages date from 2022 and differ between sections, so this page gives no current figure for start-ups supported.
