About this competition
The Rice Business Plan Competition 2027 (RBPC) is a pitch competition run by Rice University in Houston, Texas, with the Rice Alliance, and it is only for student-led startups. The founding team needs current college or university students, from any university in the world. The three biggest prizes are investments rather than cash, led by a US$200,000 investment (about ₹1.9 crore) for first place. Applications open on 9 November 2026 and close at 11:59 PM CST on 29 January 2027, which is 30 January 2027 in India.
If you are a founder who is not studying, or whose team does not have at least two current students, this is not the right competition for you.
What the program offers
The prize list is published on the competition site; the version we could read was for the 2026 round, so treat the amounts as a guide and check the 2027 list. On that list, first place is a US$200,000 investment (about ₹1.9 crore) from Goose Capital, structured as a convertible note. Second place is a US$100,000 investment (about ₹95 lakh) and third is a US$50,000 investment (about ₹47.5 lakh). Fourth to seventh place each receive US$5,000 (about ₹4.75 lakh) in non-dilutive cash, which means you give up no ownership for it.
Beyond the placement prizes there are smaller cash prizes for semi-finalists, wildcard-round teams and the elevator pitch, plus separate sponsor prizes in cash, investment and in-kind services for particular sectors. Every competitor also gets pre-competition mentoring. An investment prize is not money in your account on the day. It is closed with each sponsor afterwards, usually after due diligence, and most investment prizes need your company to be a Delaware corporation before funding. The prize page says that investment prizes not claimed or agreed by 31 October 2026 are not binding on sponsors, and that cash prizes are taxed before they are paid.
Who can apply
The startup must be student-driven, student-created or student-managed, with at least two current undergraduate or graduate students on the founding team. Students must be enrolled full- or part-time in the 2026-2027 academic year. Recent graduates (after 1 August 2026) may join, but a team made only of recent graduates does not qualify. Students must hold the main executive roles and a share of management and equity, as set out in the full eligibility document.
The startup must not have raised more than US$300,000 in equity before 1 July 2026, or earned more than US$150,000 in revenue in any 12-month period before that date. Grants, prize money, traditional loans and friends-and-family money do not count towards the equity limit. It must be a for-profit venture looking for capital. Buy-outs, corporate spin-outs, franchises, real estate syndications and geographical licensing deals are not eligible.
For an Indian student team, the university can be anywhere in the world, so enrolment in an Indian university is fine. You do not need to be incorporated to compete, but plan how you would handle a Delaware company if you win an investment prize.
How to apply
Check the eligibility summary on the competition site, then apply on the competition portal from 9 November 2026. You answer the application questions and upload an executive summary of 2 to 5 pages as a PDF. You also name your academic advisor with their university email. A practical tip: read the application preview page before the portal opens.
How applications are judged and what happens next
Screeners read the applications in early to mid February and judge them on a real customer pain point, market size, a defensible advantage, financial viability, the team's ability to execute, and whether an investor at an early point would back you today. Up to 42 startups are invited on 16 February 2027 and must confirm in writing by 22 February 2027. The competition itself runs in person at Rice University on 8-10 April 2027 with an elevator pitch round, first-round pitches, semi-final or wildcard rounds and a final round with an awards banquet. Teams must take part in every round and the banquet to keep their prizes.
About Rice University and the Rice Alliance
The competition is run by the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University together with the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, which also funds some of the prizes.
Things to check before you apply
- Between 2 and 4 student members must attend all three days in Houston. The earlier summary on this listing says meals and local transport are provided while teams pay their own airfare and hotel; the pages we could read this time did not repeat that, so confirm it.
- The official date table we could read showed 2026 for the February notification dates, which looks like a leftover typo. Confirm the dates with the organisers.
- The source does not state an application fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can enter the Rice Business Plan Competition 2027?
Student-led startups with at least two current undergraduate or graduate students on the founding team, from any university in the world. It must also be a for-profit venture seeking capital.
Can Indian startups apply for the Rice Business Plan Competition?
Yes, if the team is student-led and the students are enrolled at a college or university, which can be anywhere in the world. A startup with no current students on the founding team is not eligible. Invited teams must send 2 to 4 student members to Houston.
Are the top prizes at the Rice Business Plan Competition cash?
No. First, second and third place are investment prizes (US$200,000, US$100,000 and US$50,000 on the 2026 list), agreed with the sponsor after due diligence. Fourth to seventh place receive US$5,000 each in non-dilutive cash.
How are the RBPC prizes paid?
Cash prizes are taxed before payment and can take up to three months after you register with Rice's payments portal. Investment and in-kind prizes can take weeks or months to finalise, and most investment prizes need a Delaware corporation first. The source does not say more about payout currency.
What is the deadline for the Rice Business Plan Competition, and what if it has passed?
Applications close at 11:59 PM CST on 29 January 2027, which is 30 January 2027 in India. The source does not say whether a later round will be announced, so a missed deadline means waiting for the next edition.
Is the Rice Business Plan Competition a grant or equity?
It is a mix. The biggest prizes are investments, usually convertible notes or equity, so you may give up ownership if you accept them. The US$5,000 prizes for fourth to seventh place are non-dilutive cash.
What do I need to submit to apply to RBPC?
You answer the online application questions and upload a 2 to 5 page executive summary as a PDF. You also list your academic advisor with their university email. The source we could read does not list other documents.
Do we have to travel to Houston for the Rice Business Plan Competition?
Yes, if you are invited. Two to four student members must attend all three days at Rice University on 8-10 April 2027. Check who pays for airfare and hotel, because the page we read this time did not say.
Is it free to enter the Rice Business Plan Competition?
The pages we could read do not state an application fee. Confirm on the portal before you submit.
When will the Rice Business Plan Competition invitations and winners be announced?
Invited startups are told on 16 February 2027 and must confirm by 22 February 2027. Winners are decided at the in-person competition on 8-10 April 2027, ending with the awards banquet.
