About this competition
The T Challenge is the global innovation competition of Deutsche Telekom, run together with T-Mobile US. The 2027 edition is themed "Shaping a world of connected intelligence". The top award is €150,000 (about ₹1.64 crore) from a pool of up to €450,000, and the competition is open worldwide to individuals, teams, universities, research units and companies, so Indian startups and researchers can enter. Idea submissions close on 9 January 2027 at 23:59 CET, which is 04:29 IST on 10 January 2027.
What the program offers
The three top awards are €150,000 (about ₹1.64 crore), €75,000 (about ₹82 lakh) and €50,000 (about ₹54.5 lakh), plus a special award of up to €25,000 (about ₹27 lakh). Up to 12 nominees are invited to Telekom's headquarters in Bonn, Germany, for the final pitch and award ceremony. Telekom books and pays travel for up to five people per team: economy flights or second-class train, and up to four hotel nights with breakfast. All nominees also get chances to meet Telekom executives and explore cooperation. Nominees work with a Telekom mentor during the build phase.
Prize money is paid within three months of the ceremony, once the team has provided the documents Telekom asks for, which may include financial data and a tax questionnaire. The Team Leader handles costs and shares any money among team members, and winners are responsible for taxes imposed by their own authorities. Telekom may reduce or cancel prizes if aims cannot be met, for example because of few or weak submissions.
Who can apply
The competition is open worldwide to individuals, teams, universities, R&D units, institutions and companies. Participants must be at least 18 at submission, unless a guardian gives written consent. Employees of Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile US and their affiliates cannot take part, and neither can governmental organisations, although accredited academic or research institutions are not excluded. The Team Leader must not have worked for Telekom or its affiliates in the 36 months before applying and must not be immediate family or in the same household as such a person.
The theme covers AI-native and resilient networks, energy-adaptable networks and data centres, autonomous networks, quantum network services, differentiated services beyond network slicing, and 6G topics. For an Indian founder, it suits deep-tech and telecom software teams. It does not suit teams without a telecom angle or those that cannot build at least a working minimum viable product.
How to apply
- Register and submit your idea on the T Challenge application site before the deadline.
- Write it in English: a short outline of your technology and idea, and what you plan to build in the development phase.
- Do not include confidential information in the proposal.
- You can send more than one idea under the same login.
A practical tip: describe the benefit to Telekom's networks and customers, because that is what evaluators score.
How applications are judged and what happens next
In the first phase, expert evaluators review each short outline, and a qualification jury picks up to 12 teams, announced on 17 February 2027. From 22 February to 10 May 2027 these teams build a prototype or solution, at least a minimum viable product, with a Telekom mentor. Pitches and the award ceremony take place in Bonn on 11 and 12 May 2027, according to the T Challenge timeline. Judging uses criteria such as innovativeness, feasibility and commercial interest, and legal recourse is excluded.
About Deutsche Telekom
Deutsche Telekom AG is the organiser, together with T-Mobile US. The rules state the aim of opening doors to innovation and building a better future through advanced connected life and work. The application site is operated by a partner company, Schaltzeit GmbH in Berlin.
Things to check before you apply
- Intellectual property. You keep the rights to your idea, including the right to file patents. If you file, you must tell Telekom, which may take a licence on fair market terms and has a right of first refusal on a sale of the IP, with at least four weeks' written notice.
- Confidentiality. What Telekom shares with you must stay confidential for five years after the ceremony.
- Visa. You arrange your own German visa; Telekom gives an invitation letter on request. Flights are booked only for those with a valid visa.
- Passport. The rules state two requirements: Telekom books international flights only for people whose passport is valid for at least six months after the award ceremony, and a separate clause asks for a passport valid until at least three months after the planned departure date. Plan for the longer one.
- Marketing use. Telekom may use participants' names and likenesses in marketing.
