About this competition
The 2026-27 round of TigerLaunch, the student startup competition run by the Princeton Entrepreneurship Club, is closed: applications shut on 1 November 2026. The official site announces no dates for a next round, but it says applications open each September, so plan for a similar window next year and confirm on tigerlaunch.com.
TigerLaunch was founded at Princeton University in 2012 and describes itself as the world's largest student-run entrepreneurship competition. It offers a US$100,000 equity-free prize pool to student founders from any college or university in any country. It is open to Indian students, but it is not a domestic programme: the regional rounds are in cities abroad and the final is at Princeton in the United States.
What the competition offers
The prize pool carries no equity requirements: US$50,000 for first place (about ₹47.5 lakh), US$30,000 for second (about ₹28.5 lakh) and US$20,000 for third (about ₹19 lakh). There are also regional prizes. Beyond cash, regional finalists get mentoring from venture capitalists, founders and Princeton alumni, including pitch coaching and business-strategy guidance, and the chance to join an alumni network that the organisers say has raised over US$1.5 billion in venture funding. Equity-free means you give up no ownership in your company to receive the prize.
Who can apply
Current undergraduate and graduate students at any college or university in any country can enter, first-years included. People who were enrolled during the 2025-26 school year and have since graduated or gone on leave also qualify. Only one founder or co-founder on the team has to meet the student requirement, and teams may mix people from different institutions. Ventures from any industry and at any stage are accepted, from a concept to a prototype to a pre-seed company, so you do not need a working product. It suits student founders with an idea or early traction who want pitch practice and investor exposure. It is not meant for established companies with no student founder.
How to apply
Applications are made on tigerlaunch.com and are free. You submit your startup idea, a business plan, team information and a short pitch video. A practical tip: treat the video and the one-page business plan as the whole first impression, because reviewers read applications remotely, without meeting you.
How applications are judged and what happens next
Venture capitalists and industry leaders review applications virtually. Regional selections are announced by the end of November, and finalists are invited before regional events begin. Regional events run from December or January to February in cities including Paris, Singapore, London, New York and Berkeley. At a regional event each team gets a pitch of 6 minutes maximum (a hard cutoff) followed by questions from the judges, with no limit on slides. Judging is holistic, with no numerical score, and looks at team strength, market opportunity, product innovation, traction and growth potential. The first-place team at each regional event advances to the final; second and third receive recognition but do not advance. Finalists join a mentorship programme from March to April and then pitch live at Princeton in April or May 2027.
About TigerLaunch
TigerLaunch is run by students at Princeton and has operated since 2012. The organisers say it draws 500 or more applications a year from over 30 countries, and that many of the students who run it have gone on to start companies of their own.
Things to check before you apply next time
- Student status. Confirm that at least one founder qualifies on the day you apply, including the rule for recent graduates.
- Live pitching. The regional events and the Princeton final are pitched in person. TigerLaunch says it covers reasonable travel and housing for teams invited to pitch at Princeton. The pages we read do not say whether the regional events are also covered, so ask the organisers.
- Visas. If your team is in India, allow time for a US visa if you reach the final. The site does not give visa guidance.
- Dates move. The site shows regional events as December to February in one place and January to February in another, so check the current calendar once the next round opens.
- Prize payout. The pages we read do not say how or in which currency prizes are paid, so ask before you rely on the money for a budget.
