About this competition
The 2026 call for the WFF Startup Innovation Awards is closed: applications ended on 1 April 2026, and the finals were held in Rome on 12 to 16 October 2026. The official page announces no next round, but the awards are a yearly programme, so a later edition is possible and the World Food Forum site is where it would appear.
The WFF Startup Innovation Awards (SIA) are run by the World Food Forum, the youth initiative hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and powered by MassChallenge Switzerland. They spotlight young entrepreneurs using technology to transform agrifood systems and end hunger. The call is global, so Indian startups can apply. Part of the programme is in person: a bootcamp in Lausanne and a live final in Rome.
What the program offers
The 2026 categories were Digital Innovation in Food Processing; Fighting Malnutrition and Enhancing Food Security; Enhancing Climate Resilience and Water Security; and Empowering Women in Agrifood Systems. Category winners receive at least US$7,500 (about ₹7.1 lakh) and runners-up US$2,500 (about ₹2.4 lakh). The overall Startup of the Year receives an extra US$10,000 (about ₹9.5 lakh) from the Seeding The Future Foundation, so the top startup can take home US$17,500 (about ₹16.6 lakh). An Excellence in Applied AI award from Extreme Tech Challenge offers investor and corporate network access and an invitation to its AI conference in California. All semi-finalists can also compete for MassChallenge Switzerland's CHF 500,000 prize pool, run separately.
Selected startups join the MassChallenge Switzerland early accelerator, which includes mentoring, lectures, workshops, market guidance and access to corporate partners. Two finalist teams per category get travel support to Rome.
Who can apply
The startup must be youth-led: at least one founder or C-level executive aged 18 to 35 at the time of application. It must have raised less than US$2 million and made less than US$2 million in sales. You need validated evidence that the solution works, such as pilots, early customers, partnerships or measurable results, and you must show it can scale. The page also asks for a clear, measurable contribution to more efficient and sustainable agrifood systems, and gives priority to innovations that serve smallholder farmers, young women, rural communities and other underserved groups. Anyone pitching, joining the accelerator or presenting in Rome must be 35 or younger.
This suits early-revenue Indian agritech and food startups with real field results. It does not suit idea-stage teams or founders over 35 with no younger co-founder.
How to apply
You apply online through the MassChallenge programme form linked from the World Food Forum page, choosing the category that fits. A practical tip: collect your pilot data and customer evidence before the call opens, since proof of results is a condition.
How applications are judged and what happens next
After an eligibility check, an independent panel of experts from the UN and FAO, business, government, venture capital, academia and NGOs assesses applications. In 2026, selected startups pitched online on 4 to 13 May, participants were announced on 19 May, attended a Lausanne bootcamp from 29 June to 10 July, and joined an online demo day on 29 September that picked eight finalists. The finals and awards ceremony took place at FAO headquarters in Rome on 12 to 16 October.
About the World Food Forum
The World Food Forum is a youth-led, FAO-hosted global network that brings young people into debates on food and agriculture. MassChallenge Switzerland runs the accelerator side of the awards.
