The State Craft Challenge is an economics-based case competition organised by Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College (SBSEC), University of Delhi. It places participants in the role of policymakers responsible for addressing real-world challenges faced by Indian states — from managing resource constraints to making strategic investments. Teams must think critically, allocate resources efficiently, and develop practical solutions under a limited budget. The competition blends economic knowledge, case-study analysis, auction-based resource allocation, teamwork, and presentation skills into an engaging simulation of policymaking.
Who Should Apply Open to students and participants interested in economics, public policy, and strategic problem-solving. Teams may consist of 1 to 3 members.
Format & Timeline The competition runs in two rounds. Round 1 is an online economics quiz — an elimination round testing conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, and the ability to connect economic principles with real-world situations. The top 12 qualifying teams advance to Round 2.
Round 2 is the State Challenge, combining a case study, a resource auction, and a presentation. Each qualifying team is assigned an Indian state through a chit-based allocation system and receives a case study outlining a specific problem faced by that state — such as unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, agricultural distress, water scarcity, or industrial development. Teams analyse the case, identify key challenges, and determine which resources are essential to an effective solution.
Teams then compete in an auction to acquire the resources needed to address their state's challenges. Working within a limited budget, they must decide which resources to prioritise, how much to bid, and how to allocate funds efficiently — testing strategic thinking, resource management, and decision-making. After the auction, each team presents its proposed solution, explaining how acquired resources will be used, justifying allocation decisions, and demonstrating the feasibility and expected economic and social impact of their recommendations.
Prizes The total cash prize pool is ₹7,500, distributed across the top three teams.
