About this competition
The abstract round of the SEMI Foundation Chip the Future Challenge for 2026 is open until 14 November 2026: that is the abstract submission deadline now shown on the organisers' page, later than the original 31 October 2026 date still shown in the competition guide. The organisers do not announce a future edition on the page; it describes only the current cycle, which runs from September 2026 to winners on 31 March 2027.
The Chip the Future Challenge is a global student competition run by the SEMI Foundation, the education arm of the semiconductor industry association SEMI. University students tackle real semiconductor problems in chip design, manufacturing, AI hardware, advanced packaging and related applications. The 2026 edition is fully virtual, and India is one of its eight competing regions. It is open to Indian students, but it is a competition for enrolled university students, not a startup grant.
What the competition offers
Each of the two tracks has its own prizes: US$5,000 (about ₹4.75 lakh) for the Global Champion, US$3,000 for the first runner-up and US$2,000 for the second runner-up. Prizes are paid per team and split equally among team members, by international bank transfer; winners handle their own taxes. Regional finalists get an industry mentor from a sponsor company, a finalist certificate, a profile on the competition website and a sponsor networking session. Everyone registered receives a certificate of participation and access to the SEMI Foundation talent network. Regional winners are also invited to Micron's MIMORY Awards.
Who can apply
There are two tracks, and you compete in the one that matches your enrolment. The Innovation Challenge is for undergraduates, in teams of 2 to 5 who are all at the same accredited university. The Research Challenge is for Master's and PhD students, or people affiliated with an accredited research lab, in teams of 1 to 5, presenting original research from their university or lab. Mixed undergraduate and postgraduate teams are not allowed, and each student may be on only one team. Every member must stay enrolled for the whole competition. Your team's region is set by the institution where its members are enrolled, so an Indian college team competes in the India region. It does not suit graduates who have left university, or companies selling a product already on the market.
How to apply
Register on the SEMI Foundation page, pick your track and designate a team lead. The first submission is a 400-word abstract covering the problem, solution, technical approach, expected outcomes and industry impact, plus a team profile and proof of enrolment (a valid student ID or university email) for every member. A practical tip: choose a narrow, testable problem, because the abstract is judged on innovation, feasibility and impact within only 400 words. Everything must be in English, and supporting code and design files must be documented.
How applications are judged and what happens next
Judges in each region score the abstracts and shortlist the top five teams per track. Those finalists are matched with a mentor and prepare a demo or simulation, slides and a recorded pitch video; full submissions are due on 24 January 2027. Submissions are scored on relevance and clarity, innovation and originality, application and industry impact, design and implementation, and presentation and communication. Each region then picks one winner per track, and the regional winners are ranked worldwide. Finalists are announced on 1 December 2026 and winners in March 2027. A simulation, a video walkthrough or a hardware demo are all accepted, so no physical demo is needed.
About the SEMI Foundation
The SEMI Foundation is the education arm of SEMI, the global semiconductor industry association. The challenge is sponsored by Galatek, a supplier of automation for semiconductor production, and Micron hosts the MIMORY Awards for regional winners. Participants keep ownership of their intellectual property, though the Foundation may showcase projects for educational and promotional purposes.
Things to check before you apply
- Deadline mismatch. The live page shows an abstract deadline of 14 November 2026, while the competition guide still lists 31 October 2026 for Stage 1 submissions. Neither gives a closing time or time zone, so submit early.
- Regions. The live page we read does not list regions; the Official Competition Guide lists India among eight.
- Enrolment proof. Submissions that fail the enrolment check are not scored.
- Team rules. Pick the right track first; teams cannot mix undergraduates and postgraduates.

A 400-word abstract with a team profile and proof of enrolment for every member comes first. Finalists then send a demo or simulation, slides and a recorded pitch video. Everything must be in English.
Do I need a physical prototype?
No. A simulation, a video walkthrough or a hardware demonstration are all accepted. Selected teams build working prototypes, simulations or validated research.
Is it free to enter?
The pages we read do not mention an entry fee. Check the registration form to confirm before you start.
When are the results announced?
