About this grant
Foresight Institute, a US non-profit, runs the AI for Science & Safety Nodes: physical hubs in San Francisco and Berlin (with a community xNode in Cape Town) that offer grant funding, office space, community and compute for open AI-for-science and safety projects.
The current request for proposals has three calls:
- I. Local compute – building and providing compute that individuals or communities physically own and control.
- II. Coordination and accountability – work that helps the transition to capable AI go well.
- III. AI-first science: Bio, Neuro, Nano – using AI as the main engine of progress in biology, neuroscience and nanotechnology.
Typical grants range from US$30,000 to US$100,000 (about ₹28.5 lakh to ₹95 lakh), and larger amounts are possible for the right project. Smaller amounts go to the Human Empowerment and AI Insurance & Open Governance areas. Grants are usually paid in one lump sum; multi-year projects may be paid in tranches tied to milestones. Overheads of up to 10% of direct research costs can be covered.
Individuals, teams and organisations can apply, and both non-profits and for-profits are welcome, though a for-profit should be ready to explain why it needs grant funding. Everything the grant produces (code, data and outputs) must be open-sourced. Foresight strongly prioritises applicants who want to be active, in-person members of the San Francisco or Berlin Nodes, but in-person attendance is not a requirement to apply.
The 2026 round closed on 31 October 2026 (23:59 PDT). Foresight reviews proposals for about three months after the deadline. Watch this page for the next round.
