About this grant
Applications for the Giving Joy Microgrant are not open yet. Giving Joy, a Massachusetts-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports women's entrepreneurship, says its 2027 grant cycle opens on 1 April 2027. The grant is a one-time award of up to US$500 (about ₹47,500) for women in any country, and the 2026 rounds in spring and autumn are both closed. The official page does not yet give a closing date for 2027, but the 2026 spring round ran for the month of April, so plan for a short window.
What the program offers
Giving Joy gives a one-time grant of up to US$500 (about ₹47,500). It decides the exact amount for each winner based on the activities proposed and the funding it has available. The money is a grant, so it is not a loan and you do not give up any ownership of your business.
You can use the grant to start a new business, to expand an existing one, to start or expand a nonprofit, NGO or charity, or to run a specific activity or project, such as a training or a community workshop. Giving Joy does not fund activities that are mainly about buying merchandise or inventory for resale, advertising or marketing, or personal expenses that have no wider community benefit.
Competition is intense. In the spring 2026 round Giving Joy received 6,423 applications and awarded 10 microgrants, and it says it awards between five and ten grants per round. A small grant works best when it is tied to one clear, specific plan.
Who can apply
You must be a woman aged 18 or over. You can apply from any country, state or territory, so women in India are eligible, and you can work in any field, trade, occupation or craft. You do not need to own a business already.
Your business, organisation or idea must focus on women, girls and/or families, and all activities must be legal. Giving Joy wants ideas that go beyond personal business growth and create opportunities, income, skills, safety or leadership for several women, families or a community. You can apply once per cycle, and past grant winners cannot apply again, although unsuccessful applicants may try in later cycles. It suits women with a small, concrete project and a clear group of beneficiaries. It is not a fit if your plan is mainly to stock up on goods to resell or to pay for advertising.
How to apply
Applications are online only, through the form on the Giving Joy grant application page once the cycle opens. Emailed proposals and partnership requests are not considered. You can write your application in any language that Google Translate can handle.
Complete every field, because incomplete or vague applications cannot be considered. Describe what you plan to do, who will benefit and how women, families or the community will be affected, and say exactly what the US$500 will buy, with an estimated budget. Giving Joy suggests giving numbers where you can, such as how many women you will train. Submitting shows an on-screen confirmation message rather than sending an email.
How applications are judged and what happens next
Giving Joy first checks applications for compliance, and staff may contact you for clarification or for photos of you and your work. Staff then shortlist about 10 applications per round. Board members evaluate the shortlist and may ask for more information. Staff look at fit with Giving Joy's activities, innovative use of the money and demonstrated impact on you, your family and your community. Board members look at fit with the mission, social and economic impact, innovation and uniqueness, effective use of the US$500, and clarity and feasibility.
Only shortlisted applicants are told, by individual email. If you do not hear back, your application was not successful. Winners meet Giving Joy to review the grant agreement, deliverables and guidelines, and then have six months from signing the agreement to complete the project. For the autumn 2026 round the review ran from 1 October to 30 November, with awards announced in early December, which gives a sense of how long a round can take.
About Giving Joy
Giving Joy is a nonprofit based in Somerville, Massachusetts, in the United States. It supports women's entrepreneurship worldwide through small grants. Since 2026 it has moved to two global grant cycles a year, open to applicants anywhere, after running several regional rounds before that.
Things to check before you apply
- Applications are not open until 1 April 2027, and the closing date has not been published. Check the official page when the cycle opens.
- The grant is small, so your plan should be small enough to finish within the six-month grant period.
- A practical tip: tell the reader who benefits and how many people. The page says real community impact matters more than polished writing.
- Only shortlisted applicants hear back, so no message by the stated date means a no.
