About this grant
The Thiel Fellowship is a two-year, $250,000 grant for young people who want to build a company, conduct scientific research, or launch a meaningful project instead of sitting in a classroom. Founded by Peter Thiel in 2011 through the Thiel Foundation, it is one of the few global programs that backs founders at the idea stage , before a company is incorporated and before a product ships.
Fellows receive the full $250,000 spread over two years with no equity taken in return. In exchange, they commit to dropping out of (or skipping) college for the duration of the fellowship. The Foundation takes no stake in their ventures.
Beyond capital, fellows gain access to the Thiel Foundation's network of founders, investors, and scientists , including introductions to angel investors, venture capitalists, and potential partners in Silicon Valley and globally. The network has historically included figures like Keith Rabois, Naval Ravikant, and prominent Thiel Fellows turned mentors.
The program is sector-agnostic. Past fellows have built software companies, hardware products, nonprofits, media companies, biotech ventures, and climate projects. As of 2026, the fellowship has backed 271 fellows and the cohort counts 26 unicorn companies.
Indian founders aged 22 or younger without a university degree are eligible to apply. The program accepts applications on a rolling basis year-round and reviews applicants individually , no co-founder or team is required to apply.
