The BioNEST Incubation Program, operated by FITT (Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer) at IIT Delhi and generously supported by BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council), stands as a cornerstone for biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurship in India. Operational since late 2014, this program is a dedicated biotechnology business incubation facility under BIRAC’s BISS (Bioincubators Igniting Novel and Emerging Technologies in Science) initiative, underscoring its central role in the national biotech ecosystem. Its primary purpose is to provide a nurturing and resource-rich environment for biotech innovators and startups, particularly those at the ideation, proof-of-concept, or early prototype stages, transforming novel scientific ideas into viable market-ready products.
The program offers crucial in-kind support, including access to shared laboratory equipment and cutting-edge facilities located within the esteemed IIT Delhi campus, minimizing the prohibitive costs typically associated with biotech R&D. Beyond physical infrastructure, incubatees benefit from comprehensive mentoring by renowned IIT Delhi faculty and seasoned industry experts, guiding them through scientific and business challenges. The ecosystem support extends to critical business development areas such as business plan refinement, intellectual property rights (IPR) filing guidance, and technology transfer assistance, ensuring that innovations are protected and commercialized effectively. Crucially, the BioNEST program acts as a gateway to multiple BIRAC funding schemes, including BIG, LEAP, and SPARK, providing pathways to significant financial assistance. The program also facilitates extensive networking opportunities with investors and corporate partners, essential for future growth and market penetration. With a remarkable track record of incubating 38 innovators and startups, leading to 24 market-launched products, over 30 intellectual property filings, and the creation of more than 200 jobs, alongside raising over Rs 50 crore in funds, the BioNEST Incubation Program at FITT IIT Delhi significantly contributes to India’s biotech landscape, fostering first-generation entrepreneurs and driving innovation in biotechnology, biomedical devices, and nanotechnology.
