About this subsidy
Industrial units in Puducherry get a 50% subsidy on patent costs, up to ₹2 lakh for domestic patents and ₹5 lakh for international patents. The scheme is run by the Industries and Commerce Department of the Union Territory of Puducherry and began on April 1, 2017. Micro, Small, Medium and Large industries can apply.
It covers fees paid to patent attorneys, patent service centres and patent registration, but not travel and hotel charges. The money is paid after the patent is published or notified, in one or more instalments depending on fund availability. Self-financed units are paid directly. For units financed by banks or financial institutions, the subsidy goes through them.
The unit must have invested on or after April 1, 2017, and give at least 60% of its jobs to people of the Union territory of Puducherry. It must not transfer or dispose of fixed assets for 5 years from the date of application or subsidy disbursement, whichever is later.

What You Get
This scheme provides significant financial assistance for intellectual property protection. Eligible industrial units can receive up to ₹2 lakh (50% of eligible expenditure) for obtaining domestic patents, and up to ₹5 lakh (50% of eligible expenditure) for international patents. Disbursement occurs after the publication or notification of the patent, either in a single installment or multiple installments depending on fund availability. For self-financed units, the subsidy is disbursed directly to the entrepreneur/unit. For units financed by banks or financial institutions, the subsidy amount is disbursed through these institutions, often adjusted against existing loans or for the creation of additional fixed assets or working capital purposes. The assistance specifically covers fees paid to patent attorneys, patent service centers, and patent registration fees, excluding travel and hotel charges, thereby providing crucial legal and IP support.
